  1. what about the states? on French Government Online-Why Isn't the U.S.? · · Score: 1

Fair point, but what about on the state level? Since a lot of the aspects pointed out in the submission are actually run on the state level, rather than the federal level, surely we should at least see some of the larger states doing something? Are there any states that have looked towards doing this, or are doing this? The least the federal government could do is provide the necessary links to the state websites. Currently if I type www.gov.us I get nothing This, IMO, would certainly be a great entry point to the network?

  2. Anti-pirate system bypassed on BMG Backs Down Over Copy-Protected CD · · Score: 3, Interesting

Given that one of the so-called anti-piracy systems has been bypassed, according to this link, I wonder why the companies even bother. Also, these work-arounds are more likely to be used by bona fid pirates than someone unhappy that they have a CD they can't make their MP3s from ( yes, I know its a generalization, but the general point remains ).

With MacOS X you can, though I had to hunt around a few Linux sites before I found the answer. Basically you first have to remove the admin password and then use tftp as normal and then replace the admin password once the firmware upgrade has been done ( this worked for me ). The same approach can be used for pre-MacOS X machines if you find yourself a tftp client for the OS.

If the demos are anything to go by then it almost appears to be a mix of second person shooter and first person shooter. Also, Halo seems to be far more than a first person shooter, since strategy is actually involved. There is a goal to aim for and team work involved. Of course I will wait for the Mac or PC version before I make my final choice ( I will be buying a GameCube, rather than an X-Box ).

Apple is also trying to get the Firewire market moving. if enough people are interested in the advantages of IEEE1394 then we should see more PC manufacturers including the necessary connectors on their motherboards. Apple is basically trying to do for MP3 players what the iMac did for computers - make them appealing to the non-techie.

Maybe what is needed is for the extensions to be open, at least in the way of their API. That way as a new feature is added by on company it becomes an extension registered with some body and then work would be performed by the community to ensure that is available for implementation by any other of the card manufacturers. I can imagine that this would lead to a case where we would be talking OGL + extension collection 1, etc. At least this way the time for implementation should be reduced.

Fear is an important factor in all this. For example in WWII Germans who were against Hitler and his whole regime were sent to the conentration camps. When you know the consenquences of admitting your stand you end up keeping very quiet. In Afganistan there is a similar situation, where people are too scared to openly act against the Taliban. There are 'underground' schools and everything, but there would be a price to pay if the Taliban ever found out.

It should also be pointed out that these people do not have access to the weapons and the money that the Taliban has access to. For this reason they probably feel that it is almost better to stay alive than to do anything against the Taliban.

The people who would love to get rid of Osma Ben Laden are not in power and don't have the leverage necessary to reveal his location.

Another point is how do you target someone hiding out in a network of underground caves and where all the houses look the same?
