Why use technology when nobody is looking at the plain and simple stuff? Looks like KISS works to the advantage of terrorists as well.

  3. The SirCam experience and confusing help on Shutting Down Worm-Infected Broadband Users · · Score: 2

The other day I received an e-mail from a relation of mine which was the SirCam virus in all it glory. Luckily for me I don't use or Windows or Outlook for my e-mail. I told them that they had a virus and that they should try sorting it out. They told me they ran their anti-virus and nothing was detected, so they let me know I was wrong (got to love relations ;). It was only when someone else told them the same thing they came back to me telling me dispite getting the latest anti-virus update nothing could be detected.

Not being in the same country I decided to find some help documents and e-mailed them the references. It was only after they told me they were still stuck that I realised that most of the documents were oriented towards techies and not towards your average Joe, who considers programming the video a nightmare. In the end I told them to either find someone they knew who was good with computers locally or ask their computer shop if they could resolve the problem.

So here is the problem, what is your average Joe meant to do when all the help is targeted at people who aren't technophobic? Unless this can be addressed infected computers are going to stay infected long after the fix is available.

Forgot to mention that my relations are using a 56K connection, in Europe where being connected costs money by the minute, so when your average OS patch is starting to exceed the 20Mb size, it is likely to make some people wonder whether the update is worth the effort.

It isn't necesserily for nothing, but thier use should be limited to where is matters. For example I don't mind security at an airport, as this is a point of focus for anyone wanting to commit intetnational terrorism, but outside of the airport zone it does not make sense.

On a side note, would you prefer the presence of a friendly cop on the street ( as opposed to the extreme unfriendly cop ) or that of an ominous camera?

    1. Download firwmare update ( it is in the zip archive )
    2. Disable admin password on router (tftp doesn't support passwords)
    3. use a tftp client to send firmware update
    4. hit the connect button in the router's status page

I found that updating the firmware helped the problems I had. Since I am not using Windows I found a link that told me how to update the router from Linux. Basically you first have to disable the admin password on the router ( because tftp does not support passwords ) and then use tftp to send the updated firmware to the router. This approach works for any platform with access to a tftp client - shame they don't put this info on the Linksys website.

A friend of mine has a Nokia phone and this will quite happily transfer phone numbers both ways between it and my Handspring Visor ( didn't try with my portable ). Given this I feel that Motorola still needs to work on its I-R capability.

Given this I am not going to dump my phone, because it still serves its purpose and I can put up with copying numbers by hand, at least for the moment. BTW the European GSM phones tend to look better than those that we get over in N. America and they also tend to be smaller.
