If you're going to host a blog for five years, why not upgrade to hosting it yourself?

Why host it yourself if using existing services works so well? Sure, the guy might change stance now, but until this point I doubt that he thought anyone would be so reckless and careless in how they approached copyright enforcement, especially when the guy had permission. The more extremist copyright holders try to stamp down, the more people will realise there is a force out there out of control. Sure there are plenty of people flaunting copyright, but every case has to be looked at on a individual basis otherwise its no better shutting down a whole city just because a few people were breaking the law.

I have been given projects of this nature and the best approach is to document what is obvious and then use bug fixing as a way in to the code. While it won't give you a complete picture, it should help you understand what is immediately important, and serve as guide posts for knowing more in the future. Generally I try not to spend too much time trying to understand everything, since its a waste of time, unless that knowledge is guaranteed to serve you - sometimes the client just wants it be tweaked once in a while, so it probably is not worth the time if you can't charge them for it.

To sum up: give yourself a general picture and then concentrate on the details only when it matters.

Thanks for the correction. Yes it had been setup by the company previously, but for internal connections only, though I hadn't been able to find any explanations how to do this in Outlook 2007. This is what led me to the incorrect conclusion. If you have any links that explain how to do this, then it would be very much appreciated.

The incredible thing is that is true. I brought my Mac to work, then specified my company e-mail address and password and it simply asked me to specify my account name, since this was not the same as my e-mail address prefix. In doing so it discovered the mail server (internal and external), the calendar server and the contact directory. With this configuration in place I can even read my work e-mail from home, which is something I can't fathom how to do with the Outlook 2007. BTW for anyone with an iPhone or iPod Touch, this approach works there too.

You can rate me whatever you want, since if it triggers a decent or insightful comeback, then its been beneficial.

I suppose the issue I really have is that NASA was once considered a prize jewel in our drive towards the future. Today I am not sure what to believe its place is, between budget cuts, brain drain and politics that effect its general direction.

The real solution, IMHO, to future space exploration is finding a decent space vehicle. Such as vehicle needs to be able to be able return to orbit in a matter of days and require the least man-hours possible to return to orbit. Not depending on expensive contractors would also be beneficial. Once this problem is solved (this is by no means easy), getting to the moon becomes easier and more realistic. One advantage private companies have over a government funded organization, is that they are generally protected from political decisions and therefore can concentrate on a more long term plan, on the condition that the investors don't expect an immediate return.

The other thing we need to do is ensure we don't lose the knowledge that we spent the last 40 years accumulating, since this would force us to relearn import stuff and allow other nations to gain an advantage over us. If we are talking international cooperation, then maybe we should be looking into licensing foreign technology if that is what it takes to keep NASA in space at less cost. Russia and Europe both have examples of technology that is shown to be working and can fulfill the short-medium term of access to space.

Its not as if the shuttle program is continuing after this last flight or that NASA is going to do anything useful with the plans, other than let them gather dust or get lost. They don't have much of a budget anymore to even create a suitable replacement at this point. As a fan of the shuttle (despite the cost issues), it would be nice to see someone wasting their money on keeping the dream alive.

I know this is probably not a popular viewpoint in the USA, but I just want someone to get us to the moon again, somehow in my lifetime.

Medicare and Medicaid are atrocious money pits; Obamacare would make it much, much worse without solving the real problems. Yet another wealth transfer/entitlement program is not what the country needs or can afford now.

This may be the case, but who can we trust to get it right? Is a partially good solution better than no solution at all? I come from a belief that everything is about balance, and helping out the less fortunate actually helps the more fortunate. What I mean by that is that even if I pay for my healthcare, providing the basic support for those who get excluded or treated unfairly by private healthcare helps avoid people having to steal or use other dishonest ways to find the necessary funding. By reducing crime here actually helps me by reducing the chance of getting mugged to help someone pay for healthcare they wouldn't have otherwise got. The balance is about finding ways to prevent the 'low-end' of society being too bad, yet providing just the right incentives to not ask for government hand outs at every turn.

This sounds like a player limitation, rather than a container limitation. If people want to make an open source codec and allow people to add it to the favourite player, then I wonder whether there is anything lost by sticking to MPEG4. BTW on the subtitle side, Subler is a tool that might be worth porting to other platforms.
