I was really horrified recently to discover that Apple iOS makes my address book available without asking my permission to installed apps (specifically the Twitter app in my case, but there are no doubt others). I carefully chose an iphone vs Android or whatever other options specifically because of security. Sure, I run Google apps for business, and all my data goes through there, but I (perhaps naively) told myself that this is a paid service, so I am paying them, to leave my data alone (ish) and at least not sell it to the highest bidder. For the first time ever I am totally happy with my address-book system, I enter data once, in the field and then its backed up and useable.
The thing that really smarts here is that Apple, who I paid big money for iphone and iOS, (Apple are not offering me a free service in exchange for my data like FB ) have neglectfully given away my address book, and perhaps a lot of other data without even a 'by your leave'! I think this is unethical practice by Apple, and at best a grey area. All I think to do to fix it is go back to a paper address book, seriously? Thoughts?
Brilliant concept, well executed! Helium is a good choice, I initially thought that the balloon might be thermal, powered by wax or some liquid fuel. (eg kerosene). The ballon project video is good but it could be improved. Perhaps with a 360 degree fisheye or some kind of spin correction system, I felt a bit dizzy watching it. A really stand-out high-altitude stop-motion vid' with good production like this one of mountain views of Annapurna in Nepal can be really successful and might do a lot to promote this amazing balloon project.
This is only an issue when it is invisible, or out of your control. When I watch a trashy movie, I want a filter on everything else. When I go to news feeds, social sites, I want a challenge, many do not. they just want to not be bored.
All this is only a problem if one treats Google, Fbook etc as being a 'true' and 'correct' view of the world. any monoply supply leads to this kind of problem.
The issue here is that these big algorythms are actually tuned to collect and hold and direct attention of users as first priority. Not to hand out accurate info, advice, wisdom, world views etc. I think It is easy to forget that " free " on the net actually means "you pay us with your valuable attention".
Although this does seem a bit like getting paid to donate blood, somehow good but wrong...
this guy has some interesting writing on how selling your 'private' data can be a good idea.
While it is indicative, one teardown is hardly a statistical sample to base QC on. The things mentioned all sound like non-core functionality. It is dissapointing, but this is precisely the maths that good statistical tolerancing would do. If we replace eg 5% of units in the 1st 12 months with warranty, we save 15% on unit assembly costs if we let the workers strip a few screws. Good enough is what matters to Apple and consumers.
I understand that the internet was invented/evolved as a robust distributed system that allowed communication specifically even when subject to attack or damage. Having a 'kill switch' is completely against the core purpose. as mentioned earlier, you just introduce an attack vector that was engineered not to exist. just get enought leverage against the killswitch operator and you can cause major damage.
I speculate that this is a major reason behind tiered internet. the kill switch can shutdown only the 'low tier' users of the internet, (punters, small businesses, the small fish, whatever). But, the top tier (military, corporation, gov, banking, power generation, big fish, ) can keep running unaltered (maybe even faster, and with more hardening). In this situation, the killswitch looks a lot more useful, or at least useable.
are essentially being eroded. This is a good thing. Advertisers are essentially being quality controlled. product placement has known this for a while. Just look at the latest lady gaga video, or an episode of Madmen. Full of stuff for you to buy, and fun to watch. People like me will even plug for you, (Doh!). What we think of as ad banners will become decor, or whatever in their own right.
wait...
Isn't this just a diggit or 'like' tool for ads?
I think this firefox plugin that lets you choose your own "ads" is a much better idea. http://add-art.org/
es. obviously races, but I think this will fast become quite complex. AR overlays, chasing a ghost of the fastest 100m high traverse of a certain city. very watcheable and fun!
I agree with your 1st paragraph
but 2nd para. I don't agree gaming is purely about making money and simple implementation, these are factors true for Big Game Shops, but beauty, fun, interest, kudos of hot design hit hard, and the little players have a history of using them in the game industry.
screens are so cheap now, many people have their own lappy they drag around, or a smartphone that can hook in. I predict that soon clever developers will hook into existing hardware. eg new consoles with bluetooth, wifi, usb2 etc become a hub, byo displays. The genre will shift a little to be more like site-specific networked gaming. bring on the future!
I think also that what is happening is that games are leaving the living room, the London Tube Game Chromaroma (sic), Up In The Air and so forth. the spilt screen coop is really about a shared experience at its core, and this will never die. The above posters are correct i agree part of this slump is about revenue from broader gear consumption and subscription fees.
just send in cardboard cutouts on Segways until the turret runs out of ammo. I wonder if they would shoot at someone walking on their hands, or maybe you can program them to only shoot people with bad fashion/hair...hmmmm
I hope someone makes wall-mount mini gold refineries soon. You chuck in your old mobile phones, computer gear, company watch, stolen jewellery, teeth of your vanquished foes etc, into a nice mercury bath. Then the machine does a nice agitate cycle, boils the Hg off (or whatever, something about arsenic/cynanide) and spits out your reclaimed gold in handy billets. It would be, like, a bullion times cooler than Mobile Muster, where they ask you to just fork over your old tech booty for nought. The fumes from the mini-refineries would be pretty bad though....
Your points are all sound. I concur that the 'no max yield' call is outrageous abuse of language and scientific charlatanism. Akin to "continous improvement".
Positive feed back loops that lead to bio-accumulation(sic) are still cool though. (like the pacific island mentioned that is now collecting water and sun and birdshite much faster that 20 years ago....)
It sounds like you want to engage your kid with something universally appealling - colour and movement - Any tuff tech would do... an old portable phone, a torch, an LED bike light. If you are really keen you could make a box with some on/off switches and some lights that go on and off. Remember, this is mostly about you, and your child is responding you what you are giving attention to (your laptop) and if you give attention to other stuff they will follow that too. Don't be embarrased to admit child raising is (partly) selfish activity.
I think (and am not claiming to be an expert) essentially the concept is that if you create positive localised ecological feedback loops that allow bio-accumulation from sun, animal action, and remove/harvest less than the rate of accumulation (as harvest or yield)) then the whole system can increase with no THEORETICAL limit. but of course there are practical limits like oxygen diffusion, heat penetration, soil slippage etc. also the theory assumes a small finite 'open' system that is not lossy.
eg, if you only eat from your garden, and all your compost, human waste, etc goes back to the garden and you encourage material to accumulate in a way that does not cost you more energy than it is 'worth', your garden yield will get better and better.
And the first recorded modern practice of permaculture as a systematic method was by Austrian farmer Sepp Holzer in the 1960s. PermacultureEssentially one designs systems that run using existing natural ecologies using paths of least resistance and capturing energy/matter. Interestingly enough natural agriculture systems designed using these principle have no theoretical maximum yield.
The list, by cause does not mention virus, trojan, hacking or any thing similar as a cause for an airline crash, although it reads like a contributing factor in the article, rather than a primary cause.
(Damn pilot error.... how long till the AI's can fly planes? oh wait, they can).
This is cool, I love that the science fiction future is so present in our world right now, and the power of 'it is possible, so we did it this way' I am quite amused by the quote" You don’t have to join too many dots for potential misuse." and I look forward to outrageous innovative uses by paparazzi, peeping toms, pervs, police, pyromaniacs, pilferers, pidgeon racers......
Everything was going swimmingly until he got hooked, line and sinker by the police who smelt something fishy. I wonder if he was acting on behalf of Sid The Squida thieving octopus who was released early last year from NZ.

This is really interesting stuff... good book that I am reading (too early to review it sorry) http://cliftonchadwick.wordpress.com/2011/01/07/is-the-internet-changing-the-way-you-think-book-review/
Should have used a Trojan sized tissue!

I just tried a few. It is worth a look around. Warning: There did seem to be a lot of glitches in the house. Experimental labs and all that...

Can anyone explain how much it costs when you go past 2GB? after a good 5 min on their site, I couldn't figure it out...

Pop Nerd Quiz:how many gold mullions are in a billion bullions?

I am very happy, there are now two parties that are talking sense in OZ, and the leader of Labour is not to bad either, I can but hope we move forward at the next election... in the meantime, it is fun and commendable to join the cheefrul political bashing of Abbot: http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/bible-bashing-the-homeless-abbott-style-20100215-o2tj.html http://www.news.com.au/money/money-matters/no-more-dole-tony-abbott-warns-the-under-30s/story-e6frfmd9-1225856181945 http://www.samesame.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=14437 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSPc5UTcwHQ What an embarrasing tool!
I am reminded of http://www.sydneyobservatory.com.au/star/how_to_view.asp naming a star. I think TR should seriously consider naming an actual reactor, or maybe a uranium mine. This is Adman Genius. I am impressed.
