Oh c'mon, is that the best they could do? How about something totally original like... 'The League of Extraordinary Scientists' or the 'Fellowship of the Scientists'. That kind of thing!
Satellite uplinks tend to be compressed (usually MPEG) which will cause a few seconds of lag.
The actual signal from the uplink station to the satellite and back again is probably only about 150ms. There may also be more than one satellite involved, which would add extra lag.
Of course, they could be doing it just to look cool.:)
Yes they did. But remember, that was on the moon and that's not that far away. The round trip for a radio signal would be just over one second. This allows for direct control of the probes from Earth. What the soviets landed where basically lunar RC cars. (Not to say it wasn't impressive! It definitly was for the time.)
Now Mars is a different matter. It's a LOT farther. A radio singal takes over 12 minutes to get there (and only when Mars is on our side of the Sun). The round trip would be 25 minutes. It would be impossible to directly drive the probe anything more than a few meters at a time with that lag. You'd get nowhere!
What's impressive here is that these rovers can drive themselves! They are just told where to go and they make there best effort to get there. It's really very impressive.
The X11 protocol and the XFree86 server in my mind are not broken, and don't need fixed (improved, perhaps). Some of the drivers are broken but that's not always the fault of the XFree86 developers.
The new license is a bit strange and should be changed. THAT is broken.
I do agree about the quote not always being true. But everytime X comes up here you get people screaming about replacing it. Despite X not being broke! It's really quite good actually.
I remember reading somewhere that they optimise builds for i586 while keeping binary compatibility with i386. The exception being the packages that need optimisation, like glibc and the kernel.
No rendering problems here. There's a good chance it's a problem with your machine. Slashdot renders well on pritty much every browser on the planet. Possibly because many of the people who make them are readers.
You know for the longest time I actually thought that a the Video Toaster really was a toaster with some sort of video output. I could never understand what all the fuss was about:-)

*and* the lowest possible bandwidth they can get away with, *and* those stupidly huge and annoying logos in the corner - some of which MOVE!
Not to mention that bloody 'Press Red' crap. If I wanted to browse a slow poorly made up text system I'd use the internet on a 33.6k!!! I'm watching TV because I want to *watch television*. grrrr!
Not sure if it was because of the Cisco buyout. They switched to the Broadcom chipset from version 4. I did read that Broadcom have had a Linux driver working for quite a while for all there chipsets (including 802.11g) but won't release it.
I regulary connect up to my network using a Linksys WFC11 PC Card
I think you mean the WPC11? Linksys have changed the chipset. Newer WPC11's are a competly different card than earlier ones and have no good support under Linux.
I wonder how many of these routers Linksys have sold simply because it runs Linux and is hackable (in the good sense). They were originally very resistant to the idea of letting people do this. Infact it all started because of a bug in there old firmware!
Now, if only Linksys could release proper Linux drivers for there other wireless goods. At the moment they are all useless to Linux users.
This idea just will not go away! It's like a zombie from some old horror movie!
Charging for emails... okie it would certainly lower spam; by killing email completly in the process. There would be nobody left to spam! It's like using a thermonuclear weapon to swat a fly. And as in all good old horror movies, the fly will come back horribly mutated and worse than before.
I can understand Microsoft, but I'm suprised at Yahoo! They should know better.
I would hope whoever goes there would respect the landers and the area surrounding them as areas of huge historical importance and leave them well alone.

You mean Slashdot?
(Kidding!)
The Union of Concerned Scientists

But will it fix that dirty big green bogey on the Slashdot main page?
Ahh your right. 120ms under ideal conditions, 140ms at worst.
Still under a second total in transit. I still think the bulk of the lag in that kind of link is in digital processing.

it's pretty well unchanged from 1994
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
There are a lot of other channels that show Angel ... it's a shame they can't all chip in a bit and keep it going.
In the UK it's one of Sky Ones more popular shows, getting 0.7 million viewers. (That's a good number for Sky)
I'm quite sure they make more per-person for DVD sales than they ever would through advertising alone.

For all the latest fair and balanced news from the Bu.. Clarke government.
Oh oh I seen this episode ... this is where they made Kit evil by putting an Atari 2600 cartridge into his car stereo!

No no no! They've got it all wrong! I mean, it dosen't even have a self-righting mechanism!
Now this is more like it!!
