Perhaps the video codecs are better than I give them credit for, I still believe XviD is better but I'd choose a WMP stream over RA anyday. WMA however is without a doubt a poor audio format. You've got me curious about the HDTV resolutions now - I'm going to have to give that a try! Trick is finding HD video in the UK;)
That is freely distributeable and easily licensed for commercial applications.
At the moment... remember Fraunhofer? I certainly wouldn't want to be stuck in the MS boat when they decide they are not making enough money.
Apart from Apple, AOL/Nullsoft and Real Networks, who cares about Media Player being bundled
Anyone who has media content on there website should care. The free bundling of MS's Media Player is pushing a lot of sites to use MS's propritary and low-performance audio and video codecs. Better, free and open solutions exist yet while MS bundle there player with windows these better systems will probably never see the light of day. (For example, do you ever expect MS to support Ogg Vorbis or XviD? Didn't think so.)
Someone has spent to many hours finding shapes in the clouds! Thankfully there are no large rocks in this new landing site. At least until it gets out of that crater.
What we need todo is gather all these nuts in one place, and send them all to the Moon or Mars to see there 'evidence' up close. Briefly.
Even if anyone could salvage them, they shouldn't! Personally I would love to see these landers left alone as historic monuments. Same for those on other worlds like the Moon and Venus. (Tho I can't see many people messing around with anything on the surface of Venus:-)
Depends on who gets there first I guess. One can only hope!
Linux helping Windows boot faster, Spirit on the way to working again, Opportunity successfully landing and now Bill Gates being Knighted. At this rate Beagle 2 will come back to life, Duke Nukem Forever will get a release date and this story won't be duped!
It may have been eaten by a giant sand worm! Mars is a desert world after all...
Good luck too the MER team in getting it back! It landed in a really nice spot and would be a shame to lose it now. And good luck to both the MER-B team and Beagle 2 team this weekend!
Not the entire planet. It's a fairly narrow strip of the planet. The main mapping mission hasn't begun yet. For now they are just calibrating the science instruments. I guess this image is part of that test.
Looks great! They will be mapping more than just Mars aswell, Phobos will also be globally mapped for the first time ever.
BTW, anyone know why there hasn't been any new Spirt images in the last 3 or 4 days?
Vorbis keeps getting compared to beta. That's wrong. It's very easy to support multiple digital formats whereas it's very very difficult to support multiple hardware formats (vhs vs. beta).
The biggest longterm effect will probably be social rather than technical. DRM is impossible, that's a fact. But if they can make anything anti-DRM seem 'dodgy' or 'illegal' then they begin to get control. What company will product non-DRM hardware if everyone is convinced it's illegal?
It's starting already. I laughed out loud when I was told that region-free DVD players are illegal in the UK by a PC-World drone.
DRM will increasingly cause problems for normal users. For those who copy the content nothing will change. Normal users will then begin to copy a lot more content.
A few nasty laws will undoubtably be made when the govern... er.. corporations realise DRM isn't working to keep there high prices.
If there had to be a compelling economic argument for everything we do we'd still be living in caves! We should goto Mars because it's there!! And it's interesting and a challange! Who needs more of a reason?!
Plus all humanity is stuck on one planet. That's bad! There are numerous things which could wipe out the entire race. But put humans on other worlds, and you begin to ensure the race has a future.

"A computer with a bullet hole is a paper weight, but a map with a bullet hole is still a map."
I read that on Slashdot ages ago, sorry don't remember who said it!

might learn to associate Microsoft's mail service with gay nakid men
I made that association and I don't even use hotmail!
(or hotmale)
in all these pictures of rocks from Mars, I've yet to see a single alien building or artefact. I'm very disappointed
You and me both, tho I did notice a rock near Spirit that looked like a weird deformed version of the OpenBSD fish. Can't find the image now.

They have webcam's on mars covering the mars rover? Awesome!
I'm suprised one of the TV news channels didn't try to 'embed' a reporter in the mission.

What a week!
I see they are starting at Sol 1, but would it not make sense to continue with the Spirit timeline?
Win95 crawls. Not enough memory.
Actually .... yes :)
It's just too big, slow, and full of features
:)
I use XFree86 on my 486/33Mhz laptop. It runs rather well thank you very much

Thanks for the info!
Isn't MER-B landing on Saturday?
I was checking this. Wonder why the colour images are not on that page.

In case you hadn't noticed, its spelled "spelt".
Bugger.
I'll get my coat...
there -> thier
:)
I'm typing on an azerty keyboard you insensitive clod.
Yes I realise that's no excuse for my grammer but it's the best I've got
BTW, you spelled 'their' wrong.

When the HST can produce images like this, it's a real shame they are so quick to shut it down.
Send Ahnold to Mahhhs!
Or at least just make him *think* he had went.
