Remember, Apple sold one million songs the first week. It then took over twice as long to sell the next million. Things continued to decline sharply after that. In the first year they had only sold 70 million. It took them all the way until now to sell 30 million more, and that took bribery in the form of contest prizes. Things are looking bad for our beleaguered company.

  18. Newton II on The iPod Gets WiFi, Sort Of · · Score: 1
Why oh why is Steve Jobs against reviving the Newton? I recently got an emate cheap on ebay. While it is slow as molasses and hardly more than a toy for me at this point, I can see what they had in mind here and it is brilliant -- it makes me really wish Apple would revive it in some way. It is light and sturdy and it looks really cool. They could easily make something like this with a modern processor like the ones in recent palms, wifi, usb, and some basic software tools. Updated NewtonOS would be cool, but it also wouldn't take too much to throw a team on a stripped down version of OS X for use in PDA-like machines.

I want a mini-laptop/pda like the emate that is actually usable for basic text processing, web browsing, email, ssh, and simple database tasks (address, calendar, etc.) PDAs are great but I want a keyboard for on-the-go typing, for taking notes at lectures, for putting ideas into. I don't even want a color screen -- I prefer battery life, and lots of it. And I don't need the OS to do anything fancy or even look that great; I prefer that it boot fast and sleep stable so it is always instant-on whenever I pop the hood. I want the keys to be quiet enough that I could type in a synagogue without bothering the person sitting next to me. And I want it to weigh 2 lbs and be made out of plastic and sturdy like the emate, which looks like it could be knocked around pretty badly without trouble (I've already dropped it twice on concrete and no problems other than cosmetic). And I want it to be as much of a chick magnet as the emate is; this is a fine, under-appreciated example of Apple's superior design. I think this is a great idea for Apple to do right; but I would just as happily see some other company do it using the PDA linux that runs on the yopy and zaurus...

This may or may not be accurate. Credible scholars disagree about whether Japan would have surrendered without the atomic bombs. Many argue -- with documentary evidence from Japan's government at the time -- that the country was on the verge of surrendering and would have done so without an invasion. Remember, the firebombing of Tokyo was certainly no picnic. It would be much more accurate to say that Truman at the time probably believed this to be the case, and probably believed that there was no other option besides the atomic bombs.

First off, I absolutely love the ipod mini and I want one. But some of these criticisms are reasonable. #2 - the edges ARE sharp. I mean, you won't slice your wrist with it or anything but they are sharp. I think it's kind of cool, myself, with the aluminum it looks kind of industrial in a way. #3 - you're right, but the effect is the same as paint coming off. Where it used to be pink, there's now a silver spot. Which makes me want the silver one. #4 - the 2nd gen white ipods got it right - I think this is a step backwards. I like that the controls are on the wheel, but the wheel is not nearly as easy to use or sensitive. But even granted all those complaints, I want one. The only thing stopping me from buying one is that I already have a 30 gig white one....

  25. Actually on A Six-Step Plan for Apple · · Score: 2, Insightful

The key to Apple's success has been integrating both of these things -- user interface and "cuteness" factor. They are both aspects of "design" in the overall sense, and both are reasons for their success. Your teen sister may dig the purple and may just use AIM, but there is no question that her experience of using AIM is more inviting, comfortable, and "fun" for her because of the user interface features that set Macs apart, and not just because of the purple (which actually should be called blueberry I believe...). The color of the computer and the slick user interface -- on the iPod as well as OS X -- are all part of the user experience, and Apple understands this in ways the Wintel world never will.
