>So what's the real benefit of the desktop? It's hard as hell to make it your only desktop; you'll spend all your time wrangling with WINE. Why bother?
To be fair, Windows runs a lot smoother if you're drinking WINE while using it as well. Really, OS X is the only OS that you don't need to be drunk to enjoy using, since reality distortion is already built in as a standard feature.
Well, if Sarah Palin can see the volcano from her house, what do we need to spend money on "monitoring" for? Just have her keep an eye on it, and if it erupts she'll let us know! Hey, is there a way to make the volcano pay for its own eruption kit?
Now that a researcher has done it, and made that knowledge public means it's only a matter of time before we see real ones in the wild. I almost find it hard to believe those idiots did this. It's been an unwritten research area for decades because of the known risk.
(Or more accurately, what the unintended effect would be, the eventual creation of a BIOS infector.)
Sounds like you're advocating security through obscurity? I'm not a computer security expert but it seems to me that keeping a research area unstudied for this reason is not the best approach to any kind of intellectual endeavor.
I can get home from that day's proceedings and have Wikipedia summaries of the law, tons of background info on the defendant and plaintiff, and every news article about the case ever printed in about 2.5 minutes using the internet.
That's amazing! What kind of printer are you using?
On an iphone when you reach the bottom it sort of 'overshoots' its a bit and stops to show you there is no more. On a storm... you hit the bottom and it stops. But it doesn't give you that visual cue that you are at the bottom.
you need a visual cue to tell you your hand has gone off the edge of the phone??
The editors need to update the summary.
but that would attract far fewer irate flamewars!
And paying $50 for the license is a heck of a lot cheaper than changing countries.
That depends on the countries, no? I live in LA but I could save a lot of money if I moved to Tijuana.

He's a man of principle. He believes the same thing on Wednesday that he believed on Monday. No matter what happened on Tuesday.

Moderator thought that choice was "inciteful"
I boot without a bios - by toggling in raw machine code from the front panel switches!
Well, I boot my computer using only punch cards. And I punch the holes in them myself, from memory! With a twig!!

It really depends what you consider a "problem," doesn't it?
His comments were then drowned out by the sounds of a chair smashing through the window...
Seriously...this guy has a long track record of saying absolutely moronic shit, why does anyone take anything he says seriously?
Four reasons:
The Linux desktop is Ballmer's real nightmare... and it is getting closer.
Yes it is - I hear this might be the year of linux on the desktop!!
to whine about the mouse.
It wasn't the 15th birthday of Linux last year either, why did we have to wait this long to get a slashdot article about that?
Sorry, how can you possibly link an aborted fetus to pornography?
You're just not trying hard enough...
Most Slashdot readers, I'm guessing, would be fired for living with something so buggy.
Not me; I work for the government!

Senator Grassley, is that you?
you get it at the app store; no jailbreaking needed.
That's because Apple's patented elephant repellant technology has been included standard in iPhone software since 1.0. Jeez, folks, pay attention!

The solution to criminals with guns is citizens with guns.
The solution to all difficult social problems is pithy oversimplistic maxims that glorify cultural predispositions.
If it were truly compatible with Microsoft Exchange, it would be far more buggy, insecure, and crash-prone than it is.
Well if you're going to be a self important pendant
Flavor Flav, is that you?
You can turn off the damn beeping too you know :)
