First of all, some of us are still on dialup and have NO hope of anything faster than around 40k...
Actually MOST of us are stuck on dialup... Here in Mexico the phone company announced "broadband access to the internet", but what they really give you is a sucky ISDN connection that hardly ever works... (Plus they force you to contract a second phone line and the conversion to digital ISDN)
And I am in North America... God knows what I would do if I had to pay by-the-minute charges like in Europe and parts of Africa...

Qt Going GPL

Now, the KDE libraries are LGPL, but if Qt is GPLed, that makes no difference. Anyone who wants to write non-free software in KDE will still have to pay for the Qt Professional License.
Otherwise the whole lot will have to be GPLed, or released under a GPL compatible license.
True, but as it has been stated above, the price of the pro edition of qt is insignificant if you are serious on making a closed-source app with the intention of making money.
If you think about it, with this arrangement everybody wins: Trolltech, KDE, independent developers (both closed and open), and especially users...
So what? IE had *NOTHING* and then Microsoft marketed the snot out of it. If you think AOL won't market the hell out of Netscape 6 when it is released then you probably have another thing coming. AOL will probably ship an AOL CD for every single platform that they can using Netscape 6 and it will be everywhere.
Thats IF AOL decides to market it. AOL bought Netscape more because of its Netcenter portal than because of the technology. And presently AOL is in a contract with MS that binds it to use IE in their AOL CDs
When it comes down to it Netscape 6 will do big and wonderful things, but it will not be the Netscape we used to know and love -the days of 3x and early 4x are now very long gone.
And let me guess: this will happen Real Soon Now (C)
...but why do people complain about something they haven't even tested this year?
I just tested M16 a week ago and to my dissapointment, the thing is in the same sore shape that it was 4 months ago, as far as Im concerned. Its still slow as hell and buggy to the point of being unusable.
Whats the point of having Instant Messaging, SVG, MathMl, themeability, etc., when the damn basic browser cant mantain itself alive for more than 5 minutes of normal "just html" use.
(I admit not going over to download M17 just yet, Im on a 56k connection and Im not in the mood to download such a big app from a slashdotted site)
That doesn't make sense when I can purchase a copy of any distro including *BSD for $0.99 at Linuxmall.com.
But, for example, since I dont live in the US I cant buy a distro for that price, and since I am limited by my 56kps modem connection, I cant download a distro as soon as it arrives at the FTP servers.
So getting a Mandrake 7.1 disc without having to hunt for it through magazines is definetely a bonus.
But, more generally, I question whether there should be a predominant GUI platform on Linux, rather than an interoperable diversity. "KDE and Qt everywhere" is just as harmful to me as "Windows everywhere".
And who is forcing you to use KDE and QT? Its not as if KDE/QT is the only toolkit/desktop enviroment around...
Sorry, but there are enough applications that dont use QT or KDE. So if you dont want to use Kcoolapp, you can always use Gcoolapp
KDE2 and GNOME uses different technologies for embedding applications - look at the upcomming Koffice and the Konqueror browser - you will (more or less) be able to embed all KDE2 applications objects in those, but not GNOME apps. It's the same the other way around.
Theres a petition out there to ask the KDE and GNOME teams for a way to make KParts and Bonobo compatible...
...and is it your implication that older cars, especially of the "Yank tank" variety, are smoke-belching monsters? I have a '77 Cutlass Supreme Brougham (with the Rocket 350 V-8) that's as clean-burning as any other car I've had.
But its still a V8, and that simple fact makes it guzzle more gas (and pollute more by extention) than any (well tuned) 4 or 6 cilinder car.
Which makes me wonder: why do we buy cars that can do 200Km per hour when in most countries the speed limit rarely reaches above 140km per hour? Particularly in the cities, where you seldom get the machine beyond the 90km per hour mark...
But then again... people buy Pentium III's at 800Mhz only to surf the internet and write letters in M$Word...
i rather plug in a laptop that has some power and have it use massive wattage.. then have some low grade processor powered laptop that will last 8 hours...it would proably take 6 hours to compile a program!
IMHO you are missing the point.
The mayority of laptop users use them to use "productivity apps", listen to MP3's and CDs, and look cool (not always in that order), all while they cruise on the "Economy Plus" part of a plane. For them, extended battery life is a major plus, since they dont need to do anything computationaly intensive.
...hey, wait a second, what am i doing??? I am replying to an AC!!!
I think Transmeta is smart by not quoting exact battery times... actually a spokesman from Intel said not so long ago that Transmeta was bluffing with the battery lifespans they advertise.
Reason is because there are more things sucking power from a laptop besides the processor.
I imagine that a 12inch screen laptop with little frills and no pc-cards would last much longer than a 15inch screen laptop with all the frills and two pc-card slots cranked and working.
But of course, I expect the Transmeta-powered IBM laptops to beat candy-books on terms of battery life (not to mention your geek self-respect, lol).
I dunno, to me this post seemed perfectly appropriate. It is after all related, KDE (a desktop environment) released a beta of their next version. GNOME (another desktop environment) also released a beta of their next version.
Perhaps, and it didnt bother me that he posted that information, but HOW did he post it.
I personally did not know about the GNOME beta before this post, I'm sure there are others who would also be interested.
Actually, neither did I, and Im interested in both desktops. But the original posters lack of tact was to blame on this case.
Perhaps a better way to post this info would have been to add (OFFTOPIC) in the subject header. Or perhaps to avoid posting it here and submitting it to Slashdot for a whole new news item.
Just because GNOME is mentioned under a KDE thread doesn't mean it's an attempt to flame. The sad part is that you need to include disclaimers to let people know).
Very true, and I apologize if I was unnecesarilly rude.
YAD(yet another disclaimer): English is my second language, so please dont flame me if my grammar is not perfect. ; )
If you told the Beatles they couldn't make money off of studio albums, would they have made Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band?
Probably, since their motivation wasnt money, but the music itself.
Really, I think that if you are into music trying to make a living out of it, you are not into music for the right reason.
However, IF you are good enough that people WANT to go to where you play and WANT to support you with donations in exchange of CD's (or any other medium) with your music, weeell thats another thing.
The original poster was only kidding; do you really believe somebody honestly believes that all of the intellectual property of Microsoft should be given to Stallman??
...wait a sec. What if he wasnt kidding? (shudder)
Seems a bit odd that the lawyer Martin Garbus was just previously defending these MPAA bastards and is now fighting against them.
No, no, no... Garbus is NOT fighting or defending the MPAA, he is only working for a client.
All lawyers in all countries have to take a solemn vow when they graduate, swearing that they will always strive for the best interests of their clients, without ever allowing their own interests, morals or values interfere with their work.
Thats why the best lawyers are the ones without morals! And we would be wrong to take it against them... after all, its their job.

Ive never seen flamebait so highly rated.
We must have several GNOME zealots among the moderators.

Both licenses have their use, and I am glad for everyone who has shared the product of his/her brain into the community.
Why cant we all be friends? ; )

I dont speak japanese, but my impression is that these are two completely different names.

Yeah, but theres still no way to send a strong enough signal from a geo-syncronous orbit, essentially making geo-syncronous sattellites useless.

Then why did you post this?
I mean, really, cant there be a news item from KDE without the GNOME zealots making propaganda?
Also, cant there be a GNOME news item without the KDE zealots making propaganda?
Please, my friend, lets keep the KDE comments in the KDE news items and the GNOME comments in the GNOME news items.
disclaimer: I use BOTH KDE and GNOME
Well, they do. And they still invest heavily on TV ads.
Why? Because they are counting on the people that are even too lazy to change channels.

Much more people in Hong Kong have no decent housing, education or health services.
I dont think we need to say more about this.
