I am from India, and have been reading these things on/. in the recent stories on India. India is not a poor country, where everyone is just trying to break free of poverty. Please.
There is a sizeable population in India which earns very well and significantly contributes to the Indian economy.
The most unfortunate thing is that India still seems to believe in proprietary solutions. Further spread of IT which is influencing the daily life of individuals would have a devastating effect on the lives of society due to any small shift in the business practice involving these proprietory solutions. It is precisely for these reasons open source software need to be built which would be cost effective for the entire society. In India, open source code software will have to come and stay in a big way for the benefit of our billion people.
The speech was not made at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) as claimed in the story. It was made at IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology) a new college on IT.
Slashdot readers may remember that APJ Abdul Kalam, the President of India, is a scientist. He has worked towards developing missiles and the nuclear research of India. He is indeed a rocket scientist.
In his speech, he said: I would like to narrate an event that took place in Rashtrapati Bhavan a few months back when I met Bill Gates, the CEO of Microsoft. While walking in the Mughal garden, we were discussing the future challenges in Information Technology including the issues related to software security. I made a point that we look for open source codes so that we can easily introduce the users built security algorithms. Our discussions became difficult since our views were different.
Someone please explain to me, what the table for average salary by length unemployed is for ?
Does this mean that if I have waited for 4 months, the average salary that I should expect is $25000, but if i wait for 5 months, the average salary that i should expect changes to $85000 !!

Yes. I agree to this one here. But you should also note that search is not the primary business of yahoo. So i would say that if they keep the clutter out of search.yahoo.com then they have atleast some chance to stand. (though i know that google is a winner, but since i use yahoo email, i am trying to talk on its behalf:-)
Hey.. this is the first time that someone with a 5 digit/. id has replied to my comment !! I'm honoured.
And do you think that yahoo has not thought about it ?
check out http://search.yahoo.com. It's a look and feel copied from Google, but just that the tabs are on the side, and not at the top of the search box.
This is nothing but a hidden attempt by microsoft to create Weapons of Mass Disruption !!
Imagine a virus which can bring down your house and your microwave and your toilet:-) Would the United States take unilateral action on corporations propagating technology which can be used as WMD ?

Here's what i got:

The machine was the fourth computer to be built anywhere in the world, ran at 0.001MHz, and had a massive 2000 bytes of memory and a behemothic 2500 bytes of storage.
And it's still running, now safe in the Melbourne Museum, in Australia.
Maybe they too don't check facts before reporting. But yes, they are different in the sense that they do have a spell checker;-)
Check out this page which tells us the history of the said computer. In the end, it says the following:
Following the University of Melbourne's purchase in 1964 of a Control Data 3200 from the USA, CSIRAC was donated to the Museum of Victoria. At this time it was realised that CSIRAC was the oldest computer still in operation, and worthy of preservation so it was carefully dismantled and stored. CSIRAC is now the centre-piece of the IT display at the Museum in Melbourne.
The archive could give them a lot of valid email addresses...
Consider this one: You forward a spam to submit@spamarchive.org. The forwarded mail is now a part of the archive. Spammers snoop the archive for email addresses.
They refused retaining the logs beyond 15 months. I repeat.. beyond 15 months. and they cited cost as one of the major reasons. So why are we all discussing irrelevant things ?
The fact: They would keep the logs for 15 months. Beyond 15 months, it's not affordable to keep the logs, and hence they would not. Big Deal.
Oops.. the first I in IIIT is not for Indian, but for International. sorry. The correction still remains valid.
