Yes, this release will be expensive. It's a brand-new show, continuing a fan favorite series, and it's an OAV (always more expensive than TV). Has anyone here seen/played Sakura Taisen? The voice acting in that game is terrific. Granted, there is a good deal of FMV, but even the "normal" scenes with the characters speaking is rather well done. Besides, the FMV is an integral part of that game!

Pretty simple: the Japanese VA industry is light-years ahead of American. Disney's pretty much the only company in the US that takes the time to do truly good voice work. There are exceptions, and it's getting better, but "give a guy a bunch of words to read" is still norm in the US, whereas generally in Japan the VA's interact in a sort of "reader's theatre" setup.

Combine that with a relatively high-profile, high-budget game like Sakura Taisen, and you've got a winner.

I think you're missing Scott's position here. He's been talking about breaking free of the publishers even since the original Understanding Comics. He's taken it on the nose financially by alienating the print media. He honestly thinks that Tycho and Gabe should be able to live off PA, or whatever work they want to do, and has been throwing out ideas and calling people to think about different ways of looking at comics for years. He's lost money and respect trying to pave the way for guys like Tycho and Gabe. Or Piro and Largo and Dom and Seraphim and Tsubasa. Or Glenn and Will and Dan.

On the other hand you have Tycho, who has had the idea of living off his art come falling down around his ears, at least for the short term. Hell, it's a reasonable expectation to hope to make money from creativity, and the fact that it doesn't always work is quite possibly the SUCKIEST thing about life. Into this comes Scott with his happy ideas and his bright vision of the future, and Tycho in understandable frustration lashes out with his excellent comic, making the point that IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK!

That's cool. I think it's what Scott wants to see: people engaging him about his ideas, and in a medium he loves. But Tycho's rant was a bit harsh against Scott as a person, and Scott's understandably hurt by that, just as Tycho's hurt by Scott's ain't-online-comics-wonderful attitude. The idea of Scott as some self-proclaimed spokesman is particularly laughable, as I'm sure he'd love to see other people come out and speak their minds. Yes, it's important to not steal time from the art by talking about it too much, but a certain amount of discussion can feed back into creativity.

No, I don't think Scott is God or god. Neither is Tycho. Both of them are artists that I respect a lot. And I think they have a hell of a lot to say to each other (displomatically!). I hope they get the chance to say it.

But in my opinion the whole "they ripped off Nadia!" deal is the work of a few sad sacks who simply don't like Disney and will look for whatever reasons they can find to bash it. Either the resemblances come from plot points commonly used by a lot of other stories, or else they're sheerly superficial.

I think it's pretty obvious that there's at least some cross-pollination between Nadia and Atlantis. If Disney had just come out and said "Yeah, we were partially inspired by Nadia, we think it's a cool show, but we're doing our own work here, not just rehashing something," that would be fine. But they deny that anybody within Disney even knew about the existence of Nadia! They lost a lot of credibility with the Lion King fiasco by claiming they didn't know anything about a movie that they provided some advice and support for!

In short, it's not the common elements that's the problem. It's the failure to acknowledge sources.

  18. No magic bullet... on What Do You Do To Relieve Lower Back Pain? · · Score: 2
You have to hit this on a lot of fronts. I'd recommend a chiropractor after you've tried a few of these. When you go, make sure you get a chiropractor who doesn't want to see you, who bends over backwards (no pun intended) to give you alternatives to work on outside of the office.
    • Stretches. Regular, routine stretching will make a big difference. Try a few of these, daily:
      1. Lay on your back, lift your left knee towards your nose. You can put your hands behind your knee to pull a little bit closer, but don't bounce or overstress. This helps pull the muscles in your lumbar region.
      2. Crunches. 'nuff said. Strengthens the abs nicely to help hold you up.
      3. "Superman." This is hard. Lay flat on your face with your arms out in front of you (like Superman flying, thus the name). Now, without bending your legs or using any muscles other than your lower back and buttocks, lift your legs off the ground. Hurts like hell.
      4. "Bridge-up." This is one from junior high floor gymnastics. It's roughly the first step to a backbend, and you have to be really careful. Lay on your back with your knees up and your arms curved back over your head, so your fingers point towards your body. Then push yourself upwards. This is a real good stretch and also strengthens those nasty wrist muscles.
    • Get a little exercise. If you're a little bit flabby, that extra weight can really hurt. Walk fifteen minutes a day. Try to get into a regular swimming routine. Lift some weights--go for lighter weights with many reps; the goal is to move the muscles and, frankly, your back, because part of the problem is that your back isn't used to moving around.
    • Consider your seating. Get decent lumbar support. How is your spine curving? I'm really in a bind here, because I'm 6'4". I can't fit into the world. Chairs are too low, so I can't sit with my feet flat and my spine curves. Car seats which curve forward "above the shoulders" push right on my shoulder blades. For the latter, I have a sheepskin pad which fits under those curves nicely so I'm not arched over. But overall, think about these things
    • I second what a previous poster said: glucosamine is great stuff. Name brands will set you back $1 a pill. House brands are maybe 20 cents. I haven't noticed a difference.
    • Decent arch support. You can buy generic arch supporters, which help. But ultimately, it's worth going to your chiropractor and getting custom supports. $200, but it's worth it. Inadequate arch support tilts and rolls your hips, messing with your back. Not good.
    • Cervical pillows. $40 or so for a foam-core pillow which supports your neck without tilting your head. This will help immensely.
    • Chiropractic. A really good chiropractor will help you with advice on all of the other things listed here, and do more than just adjust. But a good adjustment does help--the goal is to have them as rarely as possible.

Then, on his own time and money, he laboured to create a series of patches that made the darned thing work reasonably well. Once that was done, he turned around and got another publisher, but rather than selling the same thing, added a bunch of content and some technical improvements to make it worth being another product, rather than a "pay for the patch" scenario.

And an even greater possibility of a Rangers series, with the pilot movie already in filming.
