  1. A couple of things. on Why Is Adobe Flash On Linux Still Broken? · · Score: 1

Flash has always been somewhat unstable, hence Jobs nixing it for the iphone.

Lets face it, linux is a miniscule market share with users who don't want to pay for software. Adobe is a software company. What is their motivation to invest in something with 0% return?

Just to swing the conversation away from what he did, to what he endured, I think that with all the people ranting and raving that software should be free, some people think that it actually is. It takes time and money to develop software. For someone like me, a small independant software developer, I spend all day every day writing software and if someone doesn't pay for it, I will have to go find a real job. I would love to rely on donations but I think that it would be awefully hard to write software out of a tent in my parents backyard. Some software is free, some isn't. Just as with music, just because you think something should be free, it doesn't make it ok to steal it.

  10. The crux of the biscuit is the document. on AbiWord vs. MS Word, For Now · · Score: 1

If people were only sharing documents in printed form, Word would be fairly easy to replace. Unfortunately people are generally sharing documents in the native file format of their word processor, which mostly happens to be Word, in which case most of the time you are better of simply using Word. Word is buggy and hard to use but I have to use it if I want to see the documents the way the author intended.
PDF as a format is awesome and seems to be gaining ground, which gives me hope that it will become the defacto standard for document sharing. Then maybe we can finally put stake in the Word monster.

What really concerns me is that MS may actually be waiting patiently and allowing mono to become stable and inturn, allowing developers to invest considerable time and effort into developing apps that use it. Once companies have an infrastructure and vested financial interest in the architecture and applications, it will be prime time to pull out the patents and do exactly what sco is trying to do, only for real.
If someone isn't paying VERY close attention to those patents MS is filing, mono could do massive damage to the open source community.

We are talking two different purposes here though, desktop and server and cacheing/swapping should be optimized for one or the other. I have three simple rules for servers.

Of course, as linux gains more of the desktop market share, this will not be the norm.
