    That's just silly. The start menu allowed for a hierarchical view of the installed programs which was a very useful feature.

    Tethers or not, it's hard to keep something like that together.

    How come? Seems like keeping it together with a tether would be the easy part and putting the whole thing in motion would be the hard part.

    They're a slow-breeding, unfarmed animal. Whaling has essentially been outlawed* because they can't sustain being hunted for food.

    That's true, but if Japan did start farming whales for consumption, that would still be unacceptable to those currently opposed to Japan's whaling.

    The main reasons are that whales are somewhat cute and are considered by some to at least as intelligent as humans.

    The only problem is that the US and Russia will both leave the UN if their veto rights are revoked.

    Why single out the US and Russia? Do you think that China or France would stay if their veto rights were revoked?

    I don't think that your grasp of fiduciary duty is as strong as you think it is.

    CEOs and corporations are not "required by law to be heartless bastards". If that were true, corporations would be barred from working with charities.

    Corporations are also allowed to consider reputation as acting in the interests of the company.

    Almost all of those "rights" are primarily put in place so the victim can have a say in sentencing. The other rights, like restitution, are already on the books.

    Both the Left and the Right are very active in pushing "Victim's Rights" laws.

    "Victim's Rights" is a code word here in the US for vengeance.

    For many crimes, punishment is not really required. For example, if a person is in prison for drug possession and is rehabilitated, while should punishment matter.

    Also, emphasis on punishment can actually hurt society as a whole. If a person is not already animal when he goes into prison, he will be when he gets out.

    I knew that the US criminal justice system was screwed up. It's pretty sad that europe is headed that way too.

    777s are supposed to have 2 to 4 ELTs. Upon a crash they're supposed to activate and detach from the plane.

    Something in this chain failed.

    The answer to your question was "no" with regard to MH370 and you've done nothing to show otherwise and quoted no sources of your own in response to several of mine.

    Quoting "broadcast news stories" isn't much of a source.

    If you want news stories, here is a link to one that discusses ELTs in regard to MH370.

    You can google more if you'd like. In any event, don't rely on "broadcast news stories" for your information - especially with fast moving news stories where there is very little information.

    No, I'm referring to the 406 megahertz Emergency Locator Transmitter, a unit that separates from aircraft wreckage and activates when it hits water. The 777s have at least one of these and some have as many as four.

    You're referring to another beacon.

    It's not like NASA has been trying to get back to the moon and has been failing. NASA hasn't been back to the moon in 40 years due to political reasons, not technical ones.

    Maybe making the disappearance suspicious was seen as a benefit. The longer this stays in the news, the better the distraction.

    If everyone thinks that the plane just crashed into the ocean, other big news stories start creeping back to the headlines again.
