Of course if you're innocent, then it's in both your interest and society's interest for you to go free. If you're guilty, on the other hand, you may want to walk free, but it's usually in your society's interest for you to be convicted.
This is very naive thinking. The justice system isn't about guilt or innocence - it's about convictions and doing what it takes to get those convictions. The justice system couldn't care less if a person is truly innocent if there is enough evidence to convince a jury of guilt.
It's a misconception that the police provide protection against crime. Very few police departments conduct useful patrols that would protect against home invasions or muggings.
Instead, police patrols tend to focus almost exclusively on traffic violations as it is a source of revenue and is more fun.
The problem with rants like this is: for what else would you spend tax dollars?
The OP specifically noted what he'd rather spend the tax money on - space telescopes and probes. I think he has a great point. I'd much rather have the resources devoted to projects like Kepler or Clipper.
The OP wasn't ranting about spending the money on social programs or rebating it back to the public. It's just that the ISS is more about diplomacy than about science and exploration.
Unfortunately, the Interstate Commerce Clause isn't interpreted like that.
The SCOTUS takes an "everything is connected" approach - e.g. if a person grows their own wheat solely for their own consumption it is considered interstate commerce because it will affect the interstate market for wheat in a some way - even if it's not perceivable.
This interpretation pretty much negates the 9th and 10th amendments of the Bill of Rights and severely weakens most of the others.
Whoosh!!! The point is that every perilous situation in the ST:TNG universe could be solved with some sort of techno babble that involved neutrinos or tachyons. On occasion singularities and anti-matter helped out too.
No one here has asserted that neutrinos don't exist.
I'm a GT grad and the school has always prided itself on a 66% dropout rate. I'm not sure if the number is still that high as the state is stupidly trying to tie graduation rates with funding.
The most intelligent marine mammals (orca, bottlenose dolphin, sperm whale) are predators though. The top primates (humans, chimpanzees) are omnivores.
But you would also have the problem of your house being targeted when you're not home since firearms are pretty valuable. That's why most gun owners don't want their addresses published.
Watch any episode of The First 48 (a show that documents real life detectives working on a case).
Every suspect is told that they aren't a suspect and that the police consider them only a witness.

One thing worth noting though is that often these systems use ancient control schemes.
That's not inherently a bad thing though - especially in this type of environment.
Because they can't run their dept without that revenue.
Sure they can - they've just got addicted to shiny new toys. Why does every small town police department think it needs an armored personnel carrier?
The police should not be in the revenue business as it is a moral hazard.

Wonder if screwing with the Hubble or other space telescopes would be considered worthwhile to help save two astronauts.

Is this the concept behind the Laffer Curve?
Both North & South Carolina were Confederate states. North Carolina was in the batch to join, but it was only 6 months after South Carolina.
You're just cherry-picking some wikipedia passages that amounts to a lot of nonsense. North Carolina joined the CSA one month after Virginia.
You're confusing North Carolina with West Virginia. North Carolina existed prior to the Civil War and was even a slave state.

That's what Microsoft tried with the Metro interface.
Sounds like a "weird" trick. Should it be banned?
You don't understand any of this. You should familiarize yourself with the topic before making incredulous posts.
Exactly. The hard thing about the Ivies and the other private schools is getting in. Ask most to solve a differential equation and they'd be lost.
Not at all. Most students that do drop out, do so the first or second year. It's called "weeding out" and it's done early on.
Your post sounds like you think GT is a community college. Are you confusing Georgia Tech with UGA?
I'm a GT grad and the school has always prided itself on a 66% dropout rate. I'm not sure if the number is still that high as the state is stupidly trying to tie graduation rates with funding.
This doesn't make any sense. Who would buy a share without the possibility of receiving dividends?
The many investors that just want the stock price to go up. Very few investors care anything about dividends.

He seems much more like Drax from Moonraker.
Who's going to inform all of the would-be muggers that the world of cell phones suddenly changed?
The fence they use to offload their stolen phones.
Not sure about NZ, but the days of surprise witnesses are pretty much over due to pre-trial discovery.
