    The difference is that IBM is what most people would consider a 'real corporation' while the FSF is more along the lines of Greenpeace or similar organizations.

    Unfortunately, even with years of virii behind us, we're STILL screwed every time a new one comes out. Yeah, we've got some better scanners and people are taking warnings a bit more seriously, but they're still just as much of a threat/nuisance as they ever were.

    The big difference is that our bodies are hardwired to 'learn' from virus attacks and build immunities while computers and operating systems are not (well outside of this lab). Currently, resistance to a particular bit of malware is not carried over into other things, unless they're using the same attack vector.

    Of course, when people finally get tired of constant virii/worms/trojans/exploits they might eventually demand a system that's designed to be secure; less an an evolving immunity and more of a spontanious improvement across the board.

    What's the point of encrypting the authentication protocol if the cracker's just going to patch around the check(s) for that code?

    If you're going to encrypt the executable, a single valid key could hardwired into the program (or an image of the unencrypted code could be pulled from memory).

    Essentially, the problem of stopping software from running on any given system is like stopping somebody from saving pictures off your webpage; you might be able to stop 99% of people from stealing something, but it only takes one person to get at it and give it to everyone else.

    The problem is that this software is most likely sending all this data to the manufacturer even when the software is legit. Beyond the tinfoil hat aspects of this, I'm sure having an untrusted sofware send whatever data it feels like back to a 3rd party flies in the face of several legal obligations that can be placed on businesses (such as HIPAA, various educational confidentiality laws or working on clasified gov't projects)

    Umm... have you looked at many CS (really engineering in general) graduate programs? A majority of students in them are Indian/Chinese/E. European/etc....

    IE - we're training our own replacements.

    No... I think they're beautiful machines and OSX is a great system but, for me, having to bust out an external mouse is just a bit of deal breaker.

    That and the fact that I'm a poor college student (not that it's stopping all the other grad students from picking them up).

    Not sure why I'm talking to the troll, but...

    You've never really worked with WTS/Metaframe, have you? They're kinda slow and -massive- resource hogs on the server end. A Linux server driving Xterms can support many more users comfortably than a Windows box driving citrix clients.

    X can't exploit clustering or SMP, because everything is built into one server, or packed into humungus libraries the size of a Moa (and about as fast

    Umm... stop me if I'm wrong, but processing power shouldn't be a significant factor in a GUI. If the thing's taking more than 5% of the CPU in the first place, something's very wrong (either a piss-poor skinning system or a broken GUI layer).

    too bad you've gotta live with a one-buttone mousepad. It's not so bad running MacOS, since most apps expect you to only have one button, but if you're runnig Unix stuff, where the standard is three buttons, it's gotta be hella inconvenient.

    My thoughts exactly; while growing up ('burbs outside of Seattle), it wasn't uncommon to have multiple power outages during the fall/winter every year, each lasting 2-3 days. This was really fun since we were running on well water.

    I'm not talking out in the sticks, either. I'm talking about 45mi North of Seattle, right off the freeway.
