    we dont need standards, we want choice people should be able to use and configure any format they want. The besting thing about open source is choice, we should not have standards. You dont want people to dictate what format you want to use do you? if we have it like that, it makes open source no better than windows. If there is to be satandard, one format will emerge. Hmm, i think i have heard that argument somewhere...

    im talking more about the concept of infections from images not the details of the methods. WE laughed because someone proposed that it may be possible, much the same way we once laughed at email viruses.

    about a year or so back there was a slashdot story about i think macafee researchers talking about viruses being transmitted over images. Everyone called it stupid market speak from a firm trying to sell more AV products by scaring people with somthing that is not possible. I think we all need to offer them an apology. I think this is a bizzare parallel to when people used to joke about email viruses way back in the min 90s. Kind of sad that it is real now. It will be even more so when images are used for exploits too. Though, i suspect those at most risk are those that go to websites looking for lots of images...

    yes but most of them are "Europe win the Ryder Cup" or something like that. It is entirely possible that the article in question has a locak bias.

    Don't knock XOR. XOR alone can be used for encryption. Infact it is unbreakable when used for encryption. Ever heard of an one time pad. For example free gmail invite to the first person to crack the following:
    1111011011001110110101011110011110101010

    Dont know what they were doing but dont make fun of XOR in encryption.

    i chat already uses jabber in the local im feature using rendezevous (sp?). that also removes the need for a central server since it uses rendezevous for discovery of other hosts.
