I was hoping someone could answer. and anyone familair with the way something like Solaris works knows how primitive the thread support in linux is.
and the new scheduler is quite controversial, i wouldnt be surprised if they return to the previous one later

There a ton of dumb things that i can put up with in the OS like the truly horrid thread support ( which uses the system scheduler), the lack of a userlevel scheduler (and thus slow as hell) and the O(1) scheduler that is just round robin! but the lack of preemption is one of the things that made me move to OS X instead. oh yeah, and darwin does threading correctly.

i think better would be to preemptively strike machines on the internet that are zombies. There should be bots when scour the net and look for these machines and then direct and attack on them before some DDOSer has the ability to use it. Either that or attack the ISP of the machine. The intention would be to force ISPs to make sure that machines on their networks are not zombies (ie scan in your own network regularly). Additionally, it would force off the net machines/people who should reall not be there (unpathched win machines)

Having switched from linux over the summer i can say these are a small sample of things the things that make it great:
    1. its a Unix clone.. comes with all the strengths
    2. It has a very well designed, clean and consistent UI
    3. Its so intuitive that your ganma can use it (try it..)
    4. It allows you to run MS office, Photoshop , dreamweaver and tons of other commercial apps alongside your Unix apps like apache, smb, namp etc.
    5. You can run X windows apps but turn it off when your dont need it and can run pretty much any (non hardware dependent)app linux can.
    6. OSX boxes can emulate i386 very fast the reverse does not exist yet
    7. All development tools are free (gcc) and very easy to use GUIs(Xcode)
    8. The development API (cocoa) is open and cross platform (GNUstep, openstep)
    9. Very good 3rd party hardware support.
    10. Fantastic applications like ilife apps, itunes etc that make windows users gawk.

For an example of the last point, have granma install a digital camera and import pics on a PC (drivers, reboot, 3rd party apps etc) then do it on a mac (plug it in) or granma rip a cd, burn a cd burn picture cds etc. (get the point)

in the end my mac is rock solid, fast and i dont have to think about anything other than the task at hand when i am using it (saves lots of time)

in the end, calling it "the best of both worlds" (linux+win) is an understatement but close to what it is.

Im sorry but i have to call you on this. A modern OS usually supports things such as paging, virtual memory, protection, support for multi threaded and multi process operation along with a whole host of other things im not mentioning. Want to see a modern os look at OSX or Solaris non modern MSDOS, old unixes etc.
and no, windows ans OSX are certainly OSes not just desktop enviromnets.. take a look at what is in the kernel level in these OSes. The analogy windows+GUI : linux+X does not apply. Linux can run without X windows cant without GUI. The windowing enviroment is in the kernel level and is an integral part of the OS

  10. cars on Windows Could Lose Media Player in Europe? · · Score: 1

when you think of cars as an analogy (as it is popular in OSS forums), you begin to understand how bizzare this is. Say ford make a car and toyota makes a car. There is no reason to include parts made my a competetior in your car. You are free to add them later, but the seller shoudl not be forced to add it. Just because toyota wants a bit of fords market in say.. wipers, shoudl not force ford to include them as an option.
I think people dont understand what a modern OS is. An OS is nolonger just the kernel and a few program to run on it. When you look at OSX, Windows you see that the OS is more a collection of programs and tools that run on your kernel to make using your computer easier.
