    the story of the ATM machine left infront of a convenience store. People whould come up to it insert their card, type the pin and be presented with an error saying there is no more money left in the machine. A week later the machine disappeared. All the people who had used the ATM had given the data form their ATM cards and pin numbers to a fake machine that was logging the info!

    well think of a situation like this: i am distributing newest binary versions of exsting Linux software (apt, rpm, deb whatever) i do this for a while and get a little following. One day i decide i need to root a few boxes. So i take the most popular software i have, and modify the source and put a trojan in it. In addition, i put up the correct md5 values for this build. So when my victim checks (if they do at all), it all looks normal. There is nothing to easily compare it to make sure it is a safe binary other than the md5 and even that, i've provided. How will you know that my binary is safe? probably no way of doing that, but you will install it anyway.

    what on earth are you talking about? im talking about windows. Windows is alot more than the kernel just like Linux is alot more than the kernel. In addition, if you know anything about windows, you know that the windowing system is part of the OS and resides in the kernel level along with drivers.If you dont know what user level and kernel level is, please stop here.
    Now, if you want to make an accurate comparison, take the linux kernel source, the X-windows source, KDE source, SDL source and source for tons of drivers and you have something like the windows source.
    You should also know that in Linux, the bulk of the code in the source is drivers not the actual OS.

  11. Re:So the question is on Microsoft Source Follow-Up · · Score: 1

    RTFA the code was intended to make windows program compatible with unix flavors. It is not the windows source but the source for some code from win 200 sp1. The code is only 600mb (size of 1 cd) when uncompressed and apparently the entire windows source is 40GB.
    So, no, the code will not build windows.

    that C# and IL are an international standard (at least in ECMA's eyes) and MS has absolutely no control over the language right? Not just that there are several other compiler for C#, made by german firms i think.
    FYI, basically it boils down to this:
    .net = european standards camp
    Java = american standards camp, though not fully done yet.

    Now, more seriously, I doubt anyone would like to use linux on their PDA.. at least from the quality of the PIM apps i see on the desktop. The best and arguably the most popular linux PIM is evolution, i think the developers shoudl be targeting their apps to evolution (or maybe even using it on the PDA). In the end folks its all about the PIM it doesnt matter if you can run mplayer with aalib in a terminal on your PDA if you cant take down a meeting time or a note and sync it with your PC.
