    I think Huxley's Island is even 10 times more depressing than Brave New World. Especially because you can take this and apply to many situations nowadays.

    Bobsled racing is also measured in 1000th seconds. But that is the only other I know where they official print out the 1000th seconds. I don't know if they print that out in swimming.

    Perhaps everything is measured in 1000th seconds, it is just not shown.

    Because that is more shit to build in, and more shit that can break, and confuse people. Micro HDMI and Micro USB look very very similar. Have fun with "I plugged in my phone and now nothing works anymore".

    If you are annoyed by this, then OS X is nothing for you.

    I switched to OS X too and I thought, How can I live without focus follows mouse. Well, after about a year with it at work, I can do very well. Focus follows mouse works in some cases, eg terminal and browser, and this is enough for me.

    I don't care about the dock, it is hidden, all the time, I don't see, it doesn't annoy me at all.

    And the GNU tools? If you need them, then OS X is not the right OS for you anyway. Else you need to install MacPorts ... and then the same shit starts again.

    Focus follows mouse does not work in OS X because the menu bar is separated from the application. But it works in application. Eg I can scroll a browser window even if it not in focus, or input stuff in a terminal window. Works fine.

    And the middle mouse paste? I don't miss that at all, got used to use cmd+c/v. Middle mouse is show all windows of this app, wonderful thing, couldn't live without it.

    I have done this for 10 years. I started with KDE1 through 4. And nothing got ever better. Whatever distro I used, and whatever version of KDE. It is just a big mess.

    While OS X might have take some stuff away, in the grand picture it just works, and at some point you just want it to work and get that stuff done, that you need to get done.

    I have a nice ordered clean structured music collection in folders, etc. I was one that said, nothing can beat drag and drop.

    Well I use iTunes and an iPod now, it is just simpler.

    As the previous poster said it was a total war, a real full war where everything and everyone suffered.

    Was the destruction of Dresden a bad thing? Yes, a lot of cultural heritage got destroyed. Was it necessary? That could be called into question nowadays, but back then? It was about winning the war and stop the Nazis from marching. It is often way too easy to see those things through rose tinted glasses after such a long time.

    And can you predict for 100% that the next huge earthquake will be in the next 5, 10, 50, 100 years? Current we can only do possibility estimates, that in X years an earthquake in the strength of Y might come in the chance of Z%.

    Except that perl has an enormous amount of CPAN libraries that are often vast superior. Just take the perl interface to postgresql. No other language has such an perfect interface than perl.

    See, and this is the strange thing about America.

    Let's take Japan, although I have three convenience stores in walking distance, I also have 2 supermarkets and one smaller grocery store and two other supermarkets if I ride my bike.

    I think a lot of people are just lazy fucks, honestly. And cooking doesn't need to take 10~20min. I can do some quick stuff with fresh vegetables in less than five minutes. I can even cook rice in a pressure cooker in my microwave in 10min. And it is still 100x times more healthy than any fast food or any process food they sell in the junk joints. Honestly, last time I checked, one of the pastas in the convenience store hat 985 kcal ...

    large chunk? You might want to check the map where there is radiation vs the rest of Japan. a large chunk would be eg the whole island of Kyushu or Hokkaido. But this is far far far far less. And predictions show, that within in 20 years the worst radiation will be gone already.
