The TV is definitely not better at upsampling. Believe me I didn't just rush out and purchase an upsampling DVD player. For sure the dvd player does a much better job at upsampling than the TV. I wrestled long and hard on whether to actually pull the trigger, and I have no regrets. The quality difference is noticeable. I did a random test with friends and family; I would randomly select which image I would show them first, and have them say which one they thought was better. A couple of people said they didn't notice a difference, but nobody said the TV upsampling looked better. Anyone who had an opinion after seeing both images said the DVD was better.

I have a DVD player (OPPO Digital OPDV971H) that does a really good job of upsampling a dvd to HDTV quality (up to 1080p I believe, although my tv doesn't support it). It all depends on the quality of the DVD itself, but the better the DVD transfer, the better it looks. I have a 60" Sony LCD and upsampled movies look fantastic. Good transfers like Sin City, or Finding Nemo for example look gorgeous.
You can buy an upsampling DVD player at your local electronics store for a tenth of the price of a blu-ray or hd dvd player, and then you can sit on the sidelines and watch the current format war wage, and save yourself some money.

Sure they can spend alot of time and money locking down all the PC's, or they can have their staff sign a document and hope for the best.

Clearly this company has it made in the shade. They release buggy software, and then charge you extra for a program (presumably bug free?) that will protect you from the bugs.

It will be interesting to see how Microsoft behaves on this one. For example, Microsoft discovers a flaw in their OS which can be protected against by an update to their security software. Does Microsoft share this information with everyone at the same time or does it give the information to it's security software division first, then notify the competitors later, and then advertise in the various trade magazines that it's software protects their PC's better/faster?

You can find lots of companies online that have AB switches that take multiple HDMI inputs and 1 putput so you can have a bunch of hdmi devices connected to your TV (I have this same issue which is why I looked into it).

There are some that even have infrared capability so you don't need to walk over to the switch you can program the toggling of the inputs into your remote.

Watching high def television content on my 60" Sony makes me drool at the prospect of true high def dvds. Right now I use an Oppo upsampling dvd player which does a pretty decent job of converting a dvd to 1080i, but the quality depends on the quality of the original dvds, so for example Attack of the Clones is gorgeous (the quality of the movie itself is another topic :) ), but my Predator dvd is awful.
That beging said, upsampled dvd's don't hold a candle to true high def. It's not quite like from VHS to DVD in terms of quality improvement...but it's pretty close!
The quality difference is masked on a smaller screen but on a large screen the difference is pretty significant.
I'm a little disappointed with HD-DVD's storage capacity, as blu-ray seems to be technologically superior, but from what I have read blu-ray's drm scheme is crippling to the consumer and should not be supported in any way!

You can already pick up HD signals with your crappy rabbit ears or that monstrosity attached to your house...a generic UHF/VHF antenna will do just fine, and companies that advertise their antennas as being for HDTV are just trying to entice you into buying them.

You will NOT have to replace your antenna, what you will need to get is an external converter to turn the signals from your antenna into something your current TV can handle.

In Ultima 8's defense though, I think the only reason the game sucked ass is because the CD-ROM distribution method was not yet mainstream and they released the game on floppies, forcing them to keep the number of creatures, places, goodies, etc to a minimum.
