VERY underappreciated flick! Somehow it slid under the radar when it was in theaters. Way better than the crap you typically see featured on TV station movie nights.
Agreed, though I wouldn't call him a hack. Science fiction doesn't have to be factual to be good. Crichton was good, not great or anything close to an icon.
I think you're wrong about Sphere. The great thing about the ending is that one of them DOESN'T remove himself from relevance (without spoiling the ending).
Try having a discussion on science in the forums of your local paper. Slashdot is indeed a much better forum than most. That doesn't mean there aren't tons of morons, just far fewer than the typical forum.
I really wish NASA thought more like this. I'm not literally talking about snow angels, but simply trying to make science more accessible to the public. Hell, some probes don't even have true-color cameras. Don't sacrifice the science, but go for some flash as well.
This is a very silly analogy. Conservatives don't govern from the left, only Liberals have migrated to the center in response to Conservative gains in recent history. If you don't think so, read up on how liberal this country used to be in terms of labor and price controls for farmers. I live in Kansas where they took evolution out of some schools and they actively campaign to criminalize abortions (I'm not talking about the Washington D.C.-style fundraising on the Pro-Life stance).
This election has actually been much better than the 4 others I've paid attention to. That's because the media is paying attention as well and not allowing BS rumors to be propagated.
Kerry was taken down by verifiably false rumors about his war record by vets who only years before had supported his campaigns.
McCain was taken down by some silly Rovian tactics in South Carolina regarding a bogus "illegitimate Black baby" whisper campaign, in actuality his adopted child from Bangladesh I think.
Dukakis rode in a tank and the media harped on "how silly he looked." The Willie Horton ad and the debate's rape question were treated just as superficially.
I'm assuming that you're about 14 years old, because you have not active memory of any president besides Bush. Clinton left office with an approval in the 60-70% range (it was even higher DURING impeachment). Reagan got busted in basically an impeachable act, gave a little "I'm sorry if what I did was wrong" speech, and left office with high ratings as well. Even Daddy Bush wasn't hated when he left office.
But, I don't think you were trying to make a point. I think you're just rationalizing away the fact of how horrible a job W has done after you probably voted for him twice.
I'm by no means a free marketer, but the point is that as market shares increase, competition decreases, and prices increase. This IS the free market at work.
Well, IE keeps "using" memory. My boss has constant issues with leaky IE threads leading to degrading performance. I get your point about use VS consume, but if I want to play WoW after an 8 hour day of on-line research, it really doesn't matter to me how IE ended up with 1/4 to 1/3 of my memory.
While most concerns may not be logical, historically there's been a lot of misinformation and outright deception produced by the pro-nuclear crowd. Look at the cover-ups that invariably accompany nuclear accidents. Look at the reaction of business interests after the 3 mile island accident ("nothing to see here, move along").
Same with Yucca mountain. Apparently there was misinformation broadcast about the actual safety of that site. So, you can denegrate the anti-nuclear crowd as a bunch of tree-hugging Luddites, but I respect their fears (note: I like the idea of nuclear power but I want to see a change in the arrogant, dismissive way nuclear power is advocated).
How long do you think the NFL would last if it turned into a death race of athletes pushing the limits of their immune systems by seeing who could dope up the most without killing themselves? Then, after prematurely shortened careers, seeing your heroes relegated to prematurely shortened lives in agonizing pain from the injuries incurred from steroids use and abuse?
I don't know you, but you're sick if you think that's entertainment.
The appeal of sporting events like the Olympics is the idea of the dedication of regular people pushing themselves to extreme personal discipline. I respect athletes who get up at 5:30 am every morning to run or swim for 4 hours.
I don't respect someone who's doped themselves up to take a short cut; anymore that I do someone who pays off a ref. No one with impeccable discipline should be forced to compete with a cheater willing to destroy his body or mind.
BTW, this is what the recent Congressional hearings on steroids use were trying to warn us about. We now have kids in middle school pumping themselves up with steroids in order to secure positions on high school teams. The testimony from stars like Clemens was supposed to be bait to get people to pay attention, but the media couldn't see past the glittering lights of pro athletes to the testimony from the medical community.
A couple of days ago, I found myself looking up birds on Wikipedia (don't ask why, my attention wanders) and found an interesting note on blue jays.
As with other blue-hued birds, the Blue Jay's coloration is not derived by pigments, but is the result of light refraction due to the internal structure of the feathers; if a blue feather is crushed, the blue disappears as the structure is destroyed. This is referred to as structural coloration.
I'm not a bird watcher, so I don't know if this is just an anomaly specific to blue birds.
I wish you supply-siders would stop and think about what you're saying. You all believe in the inviolate laws of supply-and-demand, yet never consider how much more complex markets are. Off-shore drilling won't produce oil for 10 years and then only marginally increase supply. Estimates are that prices will be reduced by mere pennies.
Also consider that the President making a statement that has absolutely no bearing on the immediate (or even near) future can impact prices. Doesn't that tell you that there are other, much stronger forces than supply-and-demand at play? I suspect Cheney'e infamous secret energy task force has something to do with gas prices.
And, this Democratically-controlled Congress actually increased the length of the work week after the historically lowest number of working days enacted by the Republican-controlled Congress from before.
USENET is dead in internet protocol terms. Usage has shrunk to such a small size and there are so many better alternatives, that its numbers will continue to decline to near oblivion. Yes, there may be a handful of gurus exchanging Linux binaries, but you're not going to see forums full of next generation users.
I gave up on it as well a couple years ago, and I was an avid user. The groups I posted to started to dry up to a trickle as everyone migrated to better forum interfaces. My current ISP doesn't even offer USENET service.

WTF? So, you'd rather work in assembly? That's like saying the quality of tools doesn't matter if you're a good enough mechanic.
Just don't advertise the version number! By indicating 1.0 on the box, you're almost stating that you anticipate bug fixes.
The movie Jaws wasn't marketed as Jaws I.

Did you watch the stock market today? We can mine indium from all the pawn shops that'll be taking these big screens tomorrow morning.
You say that as if it's a trivial concern.

Wow, I figured as long as Putin has been in government, he'd have a lower Slashdot ID. But, we are honored to have you post here sir.
Learn it, know it. A very simple utility for wiping drives that you can run as a boot disk.

To kick off the construction, a large bomb was set off. The result, the moon cracked in half and people eventually started to eat each other.
Wow, I think this is the Webster's definition of non sequitur. WTF does the result have to do with the cause?

While it may be a generality, it's a generality that's pretty accurate. Would he have been a misogynist had he been talking about Sex in the City?
Bah, the Library of Congress is the accepted standard of measure in the scientific community.
