Sorry. This isn't an audiophile argument. Bose isn't the only name in the active noise-canceling game anymore, and they make low-quality gear for the price range. You can spend less than half of what you'd spend on a Bose set on a pair of Sennheiser or Audio-Technica headphones and get significantly better audio quality and better noise canceling.
But if you'd rather pay more... By all means, buy Bose.
Back before Creative (may they die of a horrible bankruptcy) bought and ruined Cambridge Sound Works, the stores had quite an array of headphones and amps for you to try out before buying.
I'm sure you can still find places like that in urban environments. Even now, places like HeadRoom have generous return policies, though it's a lot less convenient than switching between a few sets in a retail environment.
Several years back, I went on a little spree that started with trying to eliminate PC-introduced noise from my internal soundcard that ended up leading me down the path of external DACs to a fancy headphone amp to a high end pair of headphones... I listened to a lot of models before settling on some HD-495s, which were in the ~$180 range back then (and aren't for sale anymore. The HD-595s are the closest equivalent right now.) I probably spent $500 total on the equipment, and I can't see spending more than that. The difference in sound quality as you go up in price from there is either too small to be worth the cost, or non-existent "audiophile" hype (depending on the brand and product).
And honestly, my hearing has changed so much from age 20 to age 30, that I'm not sure if I could even tell the difference between my HD-495s, and any of the higher-end models anymore (and probably some of the lower-end models for that matter).
I had a phone for years (Treo) that could copy and paste, and I never used it. I don't miss it on the iPhone at all. There are tons of things I'd rather see them fix about the iPhone software before copy and paste. For example, background processes, the push service they promised and never delivered (without any additional service fees), and using the landscape mode keyboard in the SMS app...
For the sake of argument, let's take for granted that nobody else can do what this guy does. Otherwise they'd have replaced him by now. Also keep in mind that he's using an extreme example to make a broad point. We'll take Mr. Speigel's words at face value, since we're to assume that he's not being hyperbolic about the behavior of said employee...
"Sure, he was whipsmart and could churn out code that saved the company millions"
His argument is that it's worth millions of dollars to not have to deal with this guy. Who has the bigger ego in this situation?
If I'm running a business, and a middle manager tells me that the company should spend millions so the team doesn't have to deal with an asshole, I fire the manager, not the asshole.
Race is coincidental. The fact of the matter is that the more educated you are the less likely you are to have children. This matters, because the more educated the parents, the less the child costs to raise to the society as a whole. For the general welfare of our society, we'd be better off if different people were having children.
Of course there is the downside that it releases CO2
Yeah, that and the vapors will make you blind, and it has a ridiculously low boiling point (64.7 ÂC, easily reached in a tank in a car parked in the sun on a hot day).
we Americans have just been brainwashed into thinking that diesel==bad.
Almost all of the refineries in the US produce a fixed ratio of gasoline:diesel. If consumption doesn't match that ratio, the price of one will skyrocket compared to the other.
It's not a matter of one being "bad", and the other "good".
"Netbook" is a stupid name anyway. Intel, etc, should get over themselves and call them something else.
What's 'netbook' supposed to mean, anyway? Are they somehow more connected than other portables (no). Are they so un-capable of other tasks that it can only be used to connect to the internet? (Not sure that's the message they're going for).
The workaround I use for the chimney starter is that I hold a propane plumbing torch under it for a minute or so.
You may as well just use lighter fluid at that point... Works better than a chimney starter (if you do it right - not the stereotypical drench and light method) anyway.
Have you ever heard him speak? He sounds like a computerized voice, albeit with a southern twang.
The guy's a blow-hard. I once heard his self-righteous rant about how he saw the light and left his conservative roots in the south to go be a proper liberal in Northampton MA. Even people who agreed with his positions thought he came off like a prick.
Sadly, the Author's Guild recently had a massive cash infusion from a legal settlement with Google, so he can start to pull shit like this and be a copyright bully. Wonderful.

This wasn't always true.

This is exactly right.

You can start to think about it, but you won't ever finish, because Bluetooth is just plain too slow for that.
It should be able to sync over 802.11 though. From your pocket. With no user interaction. Finding your computer with Rendezvous.... Mmmm...
What, exactly, would you copy and paste?

Translation: Control is more important than productivity.
I think it would be a lot harder for this guy to have made his point without such an extreme example.
Wrong. The cost to a professional couple to raise children is huge, because of its affect on their careers.
Correct. Cost to the couple. Less of the costs are covered by the community.
You're saying the same thing I am. You merely prefaced it with "Wrong."

From your comment:
Last I checked, and admittedly It's been almost 12 hours, the sun isn't visible in the sky at night...

They'll have tons of customers, I'm sure...
The "real" internet will finally be returned to us nerds.
Yes, this.
Give them back all of the management grads.
See if we can export some of ours too.
By "older" you mean "not very old at all", right? You know, since quality monitors last 8+ years easily...
Not sure how this was modded off-topic.

The law contains two words. "Public Performance"
It really doesn't matter in the least if it's a "performance", since as a personal device, the use of this feature isn't "public".
If your UID has less than 5 digits, it just means you weren't sufficiently paranoid about what Taco was going to do with your personal information. :)
You don't campaign for a political appointment based on your qualifications and experience. You buy it. (Money and Time are both accepted currencies).
In other words, no.
Yeah but ~5 years earlier. I think the original Everything started around 1998
Nonsense! We had xemacs and Enlightenment!
Not 'everything'.... "Everything".
Nah, we were trading files back then too. The only thing that's changed is the protocols.
