Your take on static vs dynamic linking is quite reasonable in the Windows world (because of dll hell), but makes very little sense on unix systems. Generally (although perhaps not always), the different releases of dynamically-linked libraries are _guaranteed_ to have the same interface - that is, a function which exists in several versions is always going to take the same parameters, in the same order.

If you have an earlier version than the software was compiled against, you _may_ have some issues with bugs, but it's unlikely.

What? I thought it was an extremely faithful adaption, given the limitations imposed by trying to compress three fat books into a mere 9 hours (or whatever) of movie. And before you ask, I've read LoTR so many times since my mum bought it for my birthday in 1962 that my original copy has just about fallen apart. Btw, I've never felt that Tolkien's characterisation was all that strong - most of the characters are little better than cardboard cutouts.

Part of the reason for the aisles full of keyboards and mouses is because the damn things (especially the new ones) are so poorly made, they fuck up within 6 months and need replacing. The keyboard I use (by choice) is about 15 years old and weighs about 2kg (you could beat someone to death with it) and will probably not need replacing in my lifetime, but until my son scored several of them out of a rubbish skip, I'd been replacing the things on a regular basis.

Technical issues are another matter entirely.

In Adelaide, we are blessed with the Unseen Theatre Company, who mostly do plays based on Pratchett's books. (I think they did "Mort" fairly recently.)

My oldest son is a member of this theatre company. They mostly do the plays at the Bakehouse Theatre in Angas St. They've just finished a production of "Interesting Times". They'll probably do another one pretty soon. If you live in Adelaide, go and see them.

DNA discusses, at some length, the whole process of getting the movie off the ground in "The Salmon of Doubt", a posthumous degorgement of the contents of his hard drives. (It's worth the read.) I think he was happy with the way things were going, but I'd guess things got seriously fucked up once he'd died (and thus no longer had much in the way of creative control). A pity. If, unlike DNA, I believed in the supernatural, I'd hope he haunted the shit out of the fuckers. I guess you just can't count on Disney (TM) to do the right thing.

I call bullshit. The only package selection involved with any Linux distro is that you get to select stuff that would have to be installed separately (probably at considerable cost and with several reboots) on a Windows machine.

While I wouldn't claim that Linux is easier to install than Windows, it's certainly no more difficult these days, and you get a lot more functionality.
