"with the response time and technology of the police nowadays that section of your constitution doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me"
WTF are you babbling about? Been watching too many cop shows methinks.:)
Unless you live next door to a police station, response time is still "reaction time", not "intervention/interdiction/prevention".
That means the cops show up to scrape your dead arse off the pavement if you lost the fight.
In my case, I lived far enough out that the cops couldn't find my house for more than a half-hour. The white trash crackheads partying on my perimeter road told my wife (I was deployed at the time) to piss off when she asked them to leave. That they didn't do more is likely because she was carrying a 5.56 Ruger Mini-14. She returned to the house, put a few rounds into the ground (NOT horizontally, no one was in danger) where they couldn't see the impact area but we could dig up the bullets if required), and they left rapidly never to return.
The sheriff was pleased, our neighbors ditto, and we got no more visitors. Beats going home to a fucked/dead wife and a looted house in my book.
BTW, the US can't be peaceful because it is too culturally and economically diverse. American subgroups have nothing in common, so the only way to keep society reasonably peaceful is to contain the most violent by force. Even the Coalition allows Iraqi heads of household to have one full-auto battle rifle because it is necessary in order to avoid being a victim.
Your statement implies that there is no difference between weapons in the hands of good people and those in the hands of criminals who would attack them.
That's very revealing, but there are many examples of effective, lawful self-defense using firearm. Many didn't involve firing them:
They should be hired by the college the way sponsors hire NASCAR drivers.
The nonsense about athletics being an appropriate part of higher education instead of entertainment for alumni and a way to separate fans from their money discarded. Let the jocks earn straight cash, and the smart ones can go to school by paying for it.
In that case just use an external keyboard, which are cheap enough to throw away.
There are two reasons for a non-local to be in the desert. One is because you are deployed and making TDY money, and the other is you are a contractor and making phat bank. Either way, two decent notebooks and external backup are affordable.
I'd get a couple of refurb Thinkpads and load the second to keep as an updated spare, and ship each in a Stormcase or Hardigg or similar tough container where they would live when I wasn't using them. Given that there is nothing to do off-duty in the Giant Hostile Ashtray that is most of the Middle East, I'd be looking forward to keeping any machines I had ready for immediate use.

That depends entirely why one is jumping off the cliff.
In the case of the million bucks, the genius in question might be self-aware enough to know it would interfere with the way he prefers to live. His gift for maths is tremendous, but (obviously) he is otherwise nuts.
His preferred coping mechanism developed over years. Best to let him alone.
"your only job security is the skilled application of your craft"
In a perfect world, honest virtue is rewarded.
In the real world, doing what your employer wants is what give him reason to keep you. What that is can be professional or not, and can be utterly divorced from anything one might regard as common sense.
Nice try, but the public prefer jock-sniffing to everything else.
Besides, why train more people and drive down the wages of those who had the initiative to learn on their own? Businesses exist to fuck over their employees, so said employees should not dilute their advantage.
"It entered the land of bittorrent download and piracy years ago."
Terrific viral marketing. No one who downloads it would have bought it with own funds, but many will do so with company money. Adobe allowing "controlled leakage" is the best free marketing campaign since Office 97 went from workplace "to the house" and back again.
The warranty company would be smarter to jack up premiums and laugh when your car breaks down, since they'll still get paid and breakdowns reinforce the need for their product.
That's why it's useful for the useless to take from the productive, and the productive to bribe them not to "kill the golden goose".
People are all competitors, and really, enemies. Those who only see virtue in poverty want my tax money to feed the them and the welfare brats they excrete, while the rich (correctly) see that all is corruption so there is no social obligation but that spelled out in law.
There is no reason not to get all you can and Cthulhu take the hindmost.
Xenophilia is so prevalent that any real border security effort is doomed unless driven be economic desperation. There is no knee-jerk opposition to my argument. It is _naturally_ opposed by xenophiles, and that's always been a clear majority of Slashdotters. The idea of wanting to actually benefit from ones own country instead of giving it away to everyone else is offensive to them.
Because so many recent arrivals (legal and illegal) will demographically benefit FROM unrestricted immigration of their fellows, and those who would benefit from restriction are conditioned not to advocate it, security efforts won't go very far. Latin Americans have more logical interest in open borders than restriction, for example. I realize that any efforts to protect exclusivity are eventually doomed, but I'll settle for a delaying action so I can benefit from that. If Socialism lasts long enough to take care of me, those who want it afterwards that can fight over the scraps in their race to the bottom. Government resources are infinite....right?:)
The other sticky part is that because a diverse society doesn't have any common cultural ground, it requires a police state to maintain order. The demands by Americans for security from the mob their open borders let in are driving the police state Slashdotters fear. Choices have consequences.

Mine came here LEGALLY. Know and understand the distinction, and know and understand that the Industrial Revolution is fucking OVER and we don't need vast amounts of unskilled labor to work in mills and factories long since dead. What's left of those days can be seen on Urban Exploration sites or on safari in Detroit.
There was no requirement to support the poor during the Industrial Revolution at other than the most meager level. That was then, this is now. Now, poor illegals are a pure burden. Now, the lifeboat is full and it's time to chase off the less fortunate.
Require citizenship checks for access to health care of all kinds, require it for access to anything useful, and empower and encourage local law enforcement to arrest illegals.
A bounty of 100 dollars a head for turning them in would have many takers.
The price of protecting exclusivity is restricting access to America. De-facto open borders mean the only way to deter invasion from the failed narco-states (which US policy helped wreck!) to our south is to deter employment of non-citizens.
Americans indicate by their behaviors that they want a welfare state. Making that practical means restricting who gets the goodies, and pitting citizens against illegals is inevitable.
As a citizen, I don't care about foreigners and favor chasing those who won't obey the law back where they came from. It's me or them, a binary choice. This being MY country and MY birthright, fuck them.

That isn't amazing at all.

"How about some real measurement, like a pack of cards or fractions of a VW Beetle?"
Early or late air-cooled, or water-cooled Beetle?
Agreed. An example is the Federal logistic supply system, where companies are flagged as being "woman owned".

"Do we need a new revolution?"
Things aren't difficult enough to drive revolt.
People don't revolt when there is no freedom (the odd exception of the American Revolution aside), they revolt when there is no feud.
They use MSFT OSs to avoid training users,
FWIW, migration could be as easy as giving the order. When the USAF went from terminals to PCs, it was simply a matter of telling them to adapt.
Religion and freedom are mutually exclusive, because religion = submission.
"The talking heads on the news just think he's a loon."
Being a loon and a hero are not mutually exclusive. There being no hope for peaceful change, those with nothing to lose can act...and lose nothing.
People cooperate socially and obey laws expecting a fair return. Remove their stake in society and they have no reason to care about preserving it.

The nature of his crime means he can easily repeat it if released. The solution is not to release him.

Your only "job security" is hoarding knowledge.
Now the Man can monitor consumption and infer when a weed growing operation is up and running.
Note electricity consumption, cruise by with thermal cameras to verify, profit!
