"Why does someone need to investigate this every few years?"
To inflict awkward equipment on innoncent users?
A major drawback of wearable computing is interference with manual tasks along with damage to the wearable equipment.
The aircraft maintenance world (one of their target groups) is under great pressure to have portable data access and easy-to-use test equipment. Networked maintainers can produce the data management want much quicker if they do it on the spot.
A rugged notebook (REALLY rugged) works well enough, and one can put it down when changing a hydraulic pump and getting covered with fluid. Nothing smaller is suitable for viewing maintenance instructions.
Barring miracles, wearable computing gear will get trashed faster than any other maintenance equipment. When bits break off they will present a FOD (Foreign Object Damage) hazard (= more shite to fish out of cockpits).
That's a bit of an exaggeration. The common people have always been both willfully ignorant and quite stupid. It is no arrogance to mention it. They require religion to manipulate them, and they become enraged at anything different. Their betters understand this.
The ruling classes don't hold to that superstitious nonsense, and realists like Karl Rove understand how to use it.
I'd just dban the drive, then turn in the computer with the complaint it no workee. New comp shows up, old hd is destroyed, computer goes away to govliquidation.com on a pallet.
"I'm getting pissed that popular sentiment on/. is becoming that Creationists are a bunch of evil, ignorant bastards who are out to wreck the public teaching of science."
That's your right, but the Creationists who ARE evil, ignorant Christian Taliban are quite common and do trmendous damage. The rest by supporting Creationism form their power base like it or not.
Creationism is not science, it is opposition to science, even if some of the Creationists are nice people.
Grenade. Should have been sold with an extra transmission in a crate. Unless we get an exceptionally nice one we part them out and fill the hull with scrap. At least the rear axles are nice for making trailers.:)
"Used SUV is also around 25-29% new."
Depends on the model and region of the country. Ford Explorers are common and boring. I can sell Ford trucks all day but the Explorers just don't turn folks on. They are decent vehicles.
There are plenty of used cars that get excellent gas mileage, but that still isn't the key factor buyers look for. I work at a shop that sells low-to-medium dollar used vehicles, and there is no urgent demand for high-efficiency cars. SUVs, vanc, etc still sell well.
"You could easily mod a Prius to outdrag almost any car on the road without even trying. Heck, you could take an econo box and still out drag a gas engine."
Need to see some time slips to believe that one.:)
"So what they need to do is develop a building with slots that these modules can plugin to."
Simple warehouse space with cabling and backup power would do, and a hardened data center would be especially easy to build. Military containerization by vendors like Sea Box means that there are many different styles of container to choose from.
Upgrades could be easy too. Just truck in new modules and install. Container handling equipment by companies like Tandemloc (good online catalog w. drawings) allows precise positioning of containers. Just use the caster kit, tow bar and a warehouse tug.
"What I'd like to know is: are there any decent hardware mods out there for turning noisy bulky old beater equipment into quiet compact server boxes?"
I'd just do a fan swap.I have a dual PII/450 HP Netserver with a SATA card doing backup server duty. Swapped in a quiet cooling fan from some old power supply and life is good.
Maybe YOU weren't smothered, but it is certainly common, and as a G.I. you will have seen the results in others even if you led a much different life. Working hard for ones family of course does not equal smothering them.
I used the age cutoff because the old farts wouldn't be a valid sample of recent child-rearing which is more often in a PC environement, not as an insult to younger troops.
"A: The military promotes rif-raf right off the street.
Q: Whats wrong with the military?"
Good point. How would you change Basic and the promotion process to fix this?
The US requires fingerprinting as part of the passport process, but passports are not mandatory within the country.
How would you control borders?
I'm not frightened of being fingerprinted because I do not fear my government.
I want exclusivity, border control, and tracking of foreigners. I want the sort that do not want to be tracked to stay out of my country, so laws or actions that deter them from visiting suit me fine. I have no problem with other governments tracking me when I visit their countries. No like the rules, stay at home.
Yawn. A country ought to know and control who passes through its borders, to include a background check and a recent set of prints to cross-reference with official records. Proving who I am bothers me not at all.
"The only purpose I can see of posting their identity is that people hope that "someone" is going to do something with that information."
Why is lawbreaking your only criteria here? If you know someone did a perfectly lawful act you disagree with, you have perfectly lawful options to register your disagreement.
Boycotting the Drews business is perfectly lawful. Denying business to them based on their demonstrated ethics is perfectly lawful. Making their public record easily viewed is perfectly lawful.
"That law enforcement didn't do anything is no excuse for vigilantism. If law enforcement doesn't do their job, you protest about law enforcement, not about someone you suspect of having done something wrong."
If a company does something that is perfectly legal, but that I disagree with as being unethical, I would not be censured for posting that companies background along with opinion stated as such. If a person does the same thing, pointing out who they are is not vigilantism, is is identification. Their activities are available for public judgement.
"It was bloggers and others who found out who the person was and revealed their name, not the parents."
Outing them may prevent similar acts in the future, and it allows the public to choose (lawful) disconnection and ostracism as options. If I had any business interaction with the Drews I'd sever it and make the severance public.

Cthulhu disagrees.

I, for one, welcome our new nutless monkey overlords.
"Canadians probably saw the DMCA laws in the US, and thought "Pfff, we can do better than that!"."
:P
They are working their way towards a bid for statehood.

I use an interesting personal option that ensures I never require Tasering, tackling, clubbing, shooting, etc.
I obey police directions in a peaceful manner, every time. Why should I care if people who choose not to control themselves are controlled by force?
People without self-control don't deserve my respect or care, and I don't expect police to get in a wrestling match with them.
"Used prius is 75% of new."
:)
Trendy. Buyers are very curious.
"Used dodge caravan is 29% of new."

especially after the company offering it dies...

"With all these electric only cars on the horizon, what will hollywood use to explain the ease of exploding cars?"
They'll switch to imagery of dissolving drivers.
Remember the character who got hit by "nerve agent" in the movie "The Rock"? There ya go.

Bingo!
Besides capturing the bennies from the current BRAC process, they'll be ready when future base consolidation brings in fresh units.

"Learn how to jump Marine!"
Wow.
I'd rather develop the instinct for jumping with weapon in hand from a non-burning truck that isn't being shot at.
