An easy project would be to get involved in one of the Open source Content Management Systems such as xaraya and develop a school oriented extension.
You could then use it for your own site. It's in php and can take subproject with different skill sets (somebody less programming oriented could easily develop custom themes which require not much more than html knowledge).
Why don't you take a look at one of the Mozilla bugs with large community interest (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16399 3
- sorry I am not linking because bugzilla refuses direct links from/.) and try to fix them. Some of the are enhancement requests and they would maky a nice Mozilla Firebird or Mozilla Thunderbird extension.
For example, some people even pledged money to fix the controversial http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62429 (option to put signature above the quoted text in mailnews). The devs refuse to fix it so it's perfect for an extension.
yes, I get the same for my org domain but it has to do with the way *.org domains are handled. I hope somebody can explain this as I'm not sure exactly why this happens.
20 to 1? I don't know what you are talking about. Perhaps you post your address everywhere you go. My spam/mail ration is exactly the opposite and I achieve that by registering to unimportant internet services with fake accounts or alternative accounts. The rest is handled by mozilla mailnews bayesian spam filtering. Popups are handled by mozilla just as well. Sure one popup occasionally gets through but it's no biggie.
Is it harder to get independent news sources? Judging from slashdot's sources, it seems rather the opposite. Most of the stuff I read here would have been impossible to report/know/learn without the internet. I realize you are not talking about tech news, so why isn't there a successful general interest news site using the/. model? Perhaps because the need is not there yet. I find and obtain plenty of sources, most importantly I can find primary sources (judges' opinions, congressional debates, and what not), stuff that was unthinkable 10 years ago. And guess what I a use a browser to read them. Alternative means are welcome but I don't see any reason for pessimism here.
I can't believe what I have just read. An article supposedly reporting the death of internet coming from the words of Lawrence Lessing that cites Lessing's words only once (not even linking to it), in reference to his worries about media concentration not stopped by the net.
Then, the article goes on an on with self-referencing quotes (most from the register) complaining about spam, google bombers and whatnot, all of which are not evidence and will not cause the death of the internet, and none of which were connected by Lessig to the death of the internet.
Most people get flamed on/. for not reading the article. In this case do yourself a favor, skip it and for future reference, and especially skip Orlowski's (the author) articles
I never thought I'd see the day when I saw the words good album and Eminem used in the same sentence! I forget, is he the blue one or the yellow one?
I never thought I'd think this too so I sampled and then bought "The eminem show". The eminem show contains at least 4 memorable songs, and a few more good ones. Listen to it while reading the lyrics, look at how he rhymes, it's great stuff. I recommend "white america", "business", "cleaning out my closet", "soldier", "whitout me"

It claims plastic bags are much more environment friendly, for example it takes 6 truckloads of paper bags to deliver one equivalent truckload of plastic bags. Reusability is also an issue with paper bags.
Get descent III, it is really hard to find in stores but you can find it used on amazon/ebay/whatever. It's a shoot-em up kind of game but unlike doom and its clones it is truly tridimensional (i.e. you manage a ship that can move, slide and bend in every direction in the tridimensional space). There is no gore and you only shoot robots, not people. There are amazing levels and the AI is really good.
I did miss it and I am glad... I give rms some credit and I don't think he advocates the gnu/linux name just because linux was built with gnu c and gclib. Thre must be a zillion applications compiled with gnu c and none of them add gnu/ to their name as far as I know.
Ok, but none of these tools are necessary in an OS. I guess the right question to ask is "what is an OS?" but you must agree that gzip, tar, gnome, gimp are not part of an os.
I'll stick to calling "linux" the OS, and perhaps one may think of adding GNU/ to the distribution.
I've read FAIF and didn't get a correct answer to this: why is RMS advocating the name of gnu/linux?
Linux is the kernel, but the os that comes with a (gnu/)linux distribution contains other stuff that comes from gnu: the c compiler, clib, emacs, some other stuff. Is this enough to warran a name change from simply Linux? After all I don't need the compiler, I don't have to use emacs, and so for. We don't call win2k visualstudio/winword/win2k. I am missing the rationale for naming linux gnu/linux. What is exactly gnu in a standard linux distro? If it's only a compiler and an editor then I'll stick to linux.
Perhaps, but I find that most of the features in SF are a real pain in the ass. Most imporantly, the bug tracking system. Why can't they use bugzilla? File upload is also quite antiquated. I seriously question that a big project should use sf.

Those motivating ideas were there since the beginning of the web (read Berners-Lee autobiography). However, the Mosaic team thought differently and didn't really put too much priority on including an authoring tool.
The way I understand it they were not there to protest, but to argue. I'd be interested to see a transcript their speeches, if you have them. You could "open source" them to help future similar events in other states.
