I'm ignorant; why does publication have to be through a journal or a conference?
And why is there a "bar" for publication? Why is there not a dedicated journal, printed on cheap paper in black and white to keep costs easily covered by low fees?
Nah, reboots to fix problems are less about the specific technology problems and more about time saving. A reboot can resolve a whole range of issues in one fell swoop without tying up a tech for 15 minutes as s/he investigates the problem.
So I would think reboots will continue to some extent in the world of Linux; there might be fewer problems overall given the quality of the software though.
companies are going to be betting their whole empire on the publuc accepting it... I doubt they'll be that dumb.
Well, the public are dumb enough just now to accept pretty much everything they are told to swallow. I don't there's anything dumb about companies assuming the public is dumb.
When are you Americans going to use the guns your Founding Fathers guaranteed you in the constitution? Is there some kind of threshold that must be breached when the general public locks and loads? I'm not saying this should be it, just thinking out loud.
Janus looks in two directions, not many; thus the pejorative usage indicating that the abusee is "two-faced". And quite appropriate; the face MS Janus presents to the music commercialisation industry is of security and protection, while one of restriction and control gazes down on the unwashed masses.
Notably, Janus is the god of gates and doors but not windows; what can this mean for Microsoft's next operating system release? Certainly it will be more opaque than current offerings. Perhaps we also have a clue as to the MS Doors Startup Sound - "Waiting for the Sun"? But Microsoft's wait is over. Perhaps it's really "The End"?
Between the facts and your ignorant claim, there are lightyears of difference. And that you actually got moded "interesting" for this... The moderators are still clueless, I guess.
It's possible to be interesting and wrong, just as it's possible to be boring and right!
Well, I didn't expect this to turn into a psychoanalysis session. But I have to say you are right, well, it's not so much that I don't know who I am, more that I don't want to pin myself down.
I have some personality traits and behaviours that I don't expect will change much, nor would I want them to; on the other hand there are lots of things I want to do that I have not yet done, and loads of ways I want to change. I'm not yet done growing in these ways.
And this was my point. I'm nearly 31 years old, and nowhere near "settling down". I've just come out a long-term relationship, partially because it was claustrophobic for me, and partially because my ex is a clinical depressive (diagnosed before I met her I hasten to add!) and she isn't up to being in a relationship just now.
That's why I think 24 is a dodgy age to be "settling down". I think it may well lead to a feeling of lost opportunity later in life.
Of course, not everyone will feel this way, but that's what I said in my original post! Some people will feel they have done "enough growing".
Now, I'm not disparaging marriage, and I'm not disparaging people who have done "enough growth". It doesn't make one person better than the other.
Perhaps my error is to assume more people are like me than are unlike me. In fact that's almost certainly the case as I often feel out of place amongst most people. It's a bit tricky to give life advice targetted at people unlike me.
But there you are, I'll chalk that up to experience.
Of course, you're absolutely right. It was a few years ago, but I was doing a block release college course as a trainee with a load of other trainees from the same workplace and we all did the same classes; for each class, we adopted different seating patterns, for I-don't-know-what subtle reasons, and stuck to them!
So, you can go off on a two year trip round the world and that's not a problem?
You could become a buddhist monk and that's not a problem?
You could downsize to living in a tent and that's not a problem?
She has no issue with you becoming a porn star?
OK, these are extreme, but do you see my point? You have to take your wife into account in your decisions. Maybe you wouldn't have made those decisions anyway, but that's irrelevant; now you can't.
she encouraged me to push through my personal boundaries ("men don't knit!")
Well, if that's the kind of personal boundary you face, then no wonder you don't feel restricted! I used to crochet in my teens. The boundaries I'm interested in are more... interesting.
It's great that you are happy in your marriage. I meant that, really. It sounds like you have the kind of marriage I want, when I'm ready for it.
I did not mean growth stopped within marriage, I meant, and said in my reply to you, that you don't have the same opportunities for personal growth within marriage. that means the opportunities are not the same. They are different opportunities.
Were you unable to enjoy knitting prior to getting married?
Secondly, while I am male and heterosexual I don't consider myself "macho". And I'm not particularly fond of the "macho" cultural stereotype, which seems to favour brute force, stupidity and instinct over intelligence and free will.
Thirdly, I'm not promoting the idea of working 60 hour weeks; I generally make do with 40 or so myself.
I do think the negative responses to my original post are all reading these assumptions into it, though.
I'm so sorry my post did not achieve the high standards of scientific integrity demanded by you. Now I know that Slashdot is a journal of the highest pedigree I'll be more careful to provide detailed references, and to back up any new claims with rigorous experimental data.
I agree that people who like Mozart are inately superior; I myself enjoy his works.
However I'm pretty sure my performance does in fact change when I listen to Mozart. In fact I find the two best things to listen to, which seem to promote logical thinking and motivation to act, are Mozart (and similar music) and noise (like Aube).
I suspect they have different modes of operation.
Mozart's music is very well structured, like a good program, so the mind can latch on to the motifs therein and engage in the rythmn of the music without an overriding desire to get up and dance.
Noise encourages the imagination gently, by providing a relatively blank canvas, but, given decent composition, also a sense of rythmn in the sound.
I find music with lyrics is useless as an adjunct to work as the words are distracting. Most other types of music are dance-provoking.

American Idol... I can only apologise on behalf of my nation for this travesty, and Simon Cowell.
But that's my point. It would have been funny, if holistic meant holy, but it doesn't, so it wasn't.
Anyway poofmeisterp, don't take my criticism personally, I am simply a fucking pedant.
"holistic" != "holy". At least, that false presumption is the only one I can deconstruct from your post.

Such opportunity for dismal wordplay!

That's nerds, not geeks.
Did you? In which case your memory must be pretty bad because that's a "ZX Spectrum", not a "Spectrum ZK"! :p
You clearly don't know what you're talking about; Open Source is a TM of the Open Source Initiative, not the Open Group.
And yes, if you capitalise Open, people here will think you're talking about Open Source. Think of your audience.
yes, it's bigotry.
But...
this kind of comment really pisses me off...
You proved the bigots right!
Degrees in technologies... this must be something new.
When/where I'm from, degrees are in fields of knowledge, not technologies.

The human does this, naturally.
This could lead to an over dependence on electronically-generated news and information.
Ground breaking stuff for slashdot.

Maybe the wife could take it several ways too.
Where in the story or my post is stress equated with overwork?
Where?
That's right, nowhere but in your head!
It's great that you are happy in your marriage. I meant that, really. It sounds like you have the kind of marriage I want, when I'm ready for it.

No it's not.
Firstly I'm not American.
Secondly, while I am male and heterosexual I don't consider myself "macho". And I'm not particularly fond of the "macho" cultural stereotype, which seems to favour brute force, stupidity and instinct over intelligence and free will.

Oh, I forgot to use the word "prick" in my other post and I don't want to be incomplete in my synthesis so here it is:
Prick.
I'm so sorry my post did not achieve the high standards of scientific integrity demanded by you. Now I know that Slashdot is a journal of the highest pedigree I'll be more careful to provide detailed references, and to back up any new claims with rigorous experimental data.

Yeah, I spelled sacrifice wrong. It's not a word I use much, hahaha.
