The american 'meltdown' is going to benefit people everywhere outside of america MUCH more than it is going to hurt people within the USA.
So why do you think it is going to be such a bad thing?
Ever hear of unintended consequences? Or in this case, indirect effects.
So lets just say the US has a total melt down and our (I am a filthy American and proud of it.), quality life goes into a slight decline at the benefit of the developed world, and a few countries becoming developed.
Now, Canada will suffer a bit due to the tightening purse of the largest importer of Canadian goods, and Mexico will continue to be Mexico unless their is a violent revolution. Maybe we decide to trade with Cuba, maybe we don't
Now assume Europe remains relatively insular, and just becomes slightly more muslim due to immigration trends. Lets also assume that the oil lasts in the Middle East long enough for it to remain at its current level of instability.
So China is the new "bad guy" super power. Who becomes the "good guy" after we fade into the night? Well I would think India. They are the worlds largest democracy, and have a growing economy. They also value education. I predict they will soon outsource their own call centers to countries like the Phillipines that now offer slightly cheaper call centers than India.
So let me ask you, how do you suppose China and India will keep their war "cold" if they share a border?
Now I know their is a lot of speculation in my example, but the point is actions can have unforeseeable consequences.
Neither the web browser or tabbed browsing originate from open source projects. I'm not saying that Microsoft is right saying that OSS never innovates but if you are going to debunk their claim I suggest sticking to fact.
Though that's not always necessary when talking about Microsoft on Slashdot to receive a favorable moderation.
I thought Mosaic was the first web browser and open source? Maybe it was an R&D project whose open sourcing was an after the fact. Also, I had a C++ book that came with a personal edition of Borland C++ Builder, that showed you how to build a tabbed web browser using the IE active x control. I'm pretty sure this predates Opera, and can be considered Open Source.
And I'd prefer if the Kennedy's stuck to moon shining. The point is you need some old farts, some young guns, and some middle aged people. I'm sure you could name a few old people you would like to have on the list.
When Obama drafts the Declaration of Independence, in doing so works to win a war against a power many times in economic and military strength, doubles the size of the United States, I'd then put him in the same category as Jefferson.
When Obama sleeps with the equivalent of Marylin Munroe, then I'd put him in the same category as Kennedy.
The point was their all young. I don't like Obama either. I think he could do great things I would completely disagree with if he becomes president, or just become another beltway insider.
BTW I'm quite sure Obama could sleep with almost any woman he wanted to. I think he has a sense of fidelity or hasn't gotten caught yet.
And if you can't name a third good young politician off the top of your head, it proves my point.
Or, failing that, if only they could die as quickly as he did.
(Apologies for the inappropriate humour, I was deeply moved by his lecture and even more so by his passing away. On behalf of ACs all over the internet, I wish him much success in the great lecture hall in the sky.)
Which would mean all our politicians will be Jeffersons, JFKs or Obama's. We'd never get a Franklin or a Regan.
Return it and buy from a manufacturer... no need to disassemble the BIOS, your time is worth more than that.
That's not always the case. And while I didn't RTFA, I'm going to make some general arguments against that statement/
First of all this person seems to be very knowledgeable of these low level details. So, its possible he discovered this very quickly. Being able to make a certain determination and going to tech support with enough knowledge to get you escalated past the triage people is worth your time. If he was able to avoid returning this product, it might have saved him some time.
Second is the fun aspect of this. Maybe he enjoys this sort of research. Perhaps for a faulty car or toilet he would not diagnose it himself.
Finally there is the question of what his time is worth. If he's a college student, or consultant that can't find 40 hours of work in a week then it might be worth his time. My time may be worth x based on my salary and what I command in side work. However, I can't always convert x amount of time into x amount of dollars. He might have a surplus of time at the moment.
So, if it was dated to 4 BCE (thats BC for you christians who havn't adopted the new format for dates)... how does it have the gospel of mark (which was written after christ?)
Ok so the common era was based on the birth of Christ, even if there was no historical Jesus. So why the renaming? If you want to renumber the years based on something else, like the fall of the Roman Empire or the dark ages, then rename it.
This is an awesome example of business 'process' flying completely in the face of common sense. It starts with the packaging for each license being completely overdone to begin with, and continues through to the pick-list in the warehouse where the workers are not allowed to use their brain and alter the process. I bet they worked that out real nice with Six Sigma *cough*.
I wouldn't want order pickers altering the process in this case. They should go to their supervisor who should be listened to when he points out the stupidity of the matter. There might be a reason for the process to be that way.
Now I think a hundred dollar check to the picker and his supervisor would be a good thing as well when this happened.
I never read him, but I've had similar experience with 1984. Obviously, I though it was political when I read it at 14 (~1996), but I considered it as well as The Lion an the Unicorn an impossibility since we beat the Russians, and the British were pretty democratic. I think even if 9/11 never happened, or if we ignored it I'd still think differently about it.
I think preteens will appreciate the meaning of books they read at that age when they are older. I certainly saw the whole epic good versus epic evil themes of the lord of the rings in 5th and 6th grade, and sensed that was some sort of Christian allegory. I later learned Tolkien was a devout Catholic and hated allegory which explains why the christian symbolism didn't quite add up.
You can't rent yourself -- a contract that would allow someone to do "anything" with your body would be invalid.
You can rent your labor what is not the same as renting your body. In fact, nothing prevents you from renting a labor that you perform with tools that you don't own, or even with prosthetic replacements for your body parts that you may or may not own -- your body's involvement in your labor is not relevant, your control over performing your labor is.
So there are some restrictions in how I can exchange them, but I have an intrinsic set of resources (my person) and I can with some restriction trade that with others.
The fact that these restrictions increase my freedom supports my claim. I have specific property rights. Owning my person is an inalienable right, therefore it circumvents my intrinsic right to waive that right via trade.

It's M$ goo. It's a "we lost our J++ lawsuit so we gonna rewrap our crap" thingy..
How very English of you. So, is your Right to Free Speech based on "property rights"?
I own my person, my vocal cords and my thoughts. Now that doesn't necessarily mean that I own your "copy" of my thoughts after I tell them to you. However, if you consider speech commerce (in the general sense) then my statement holds true.
Its compatible with Diesm, and monotheistic religions both Abrahamic and non Abrahamic.
I guess that covers everybody.
I never said it did. Its not contradictory nor a dogma though. Also, remember, we acquired our collection of religions nutjobs because they were oppressed by Europe. We even came up with a couple of nutjob religions of our own.
Do you really hate your country so much that you would wish to inflict upon it both economic oppression and removal of freedoms by arbitrary members of society as well as a bizzare and contradictory religious dogma?
You sir are un-American.
All rights begin with our property rights, and there is no Dogma in the statement "God Bless America," other than acknowledging a monotheistic entity. Its compatible with Diesm, and monotheistic religions both Abrahamic and non Abrahamic.
There is an error with your logic. Just because I *could* delete all our site data (for example), does not give me permission to do so. Companies have standards to keep everything somewhat similar. I was actually impressed that someone was actually monitoring what people have on their systems.
Ok perhaps its not totally black and white. However, I find this particular case, a particular version of IE a bit disturbing. Then again, I've never worked for a company large enough to have a reason to care. Perhaps they were thoroughly testing each individual web app the company used.
It's clear that cutting corners for performance reasons isn't working. Time to bounds check everything.
What do bounds checks have to do with viruses and malware? Most initial infections are caused by stupid users? Also, I don't think windows cuts corners for performance reasons.
I am typing this comment into IE6 right now. At my company IE6 is the standard. I had upgraded to IE7 a while ago (TABS!) and someone came up and asked me to uninstall it.
If they care enough to ask you to to uninstall it, why do they trust you with local admin privileges. Either you not allowed to and you can't or your allowed to and you can.
Better not. That thing would contribute to global warming a bit.
Actually, since fusion itself is an endothermic nuclear reaction, (maybe that's not the correct term for a nuclear reaction) it might be possible to create a nuclear reactor that contributes to global cooling.

Yeah it wouldn't help with my reading skills either I guess.
Good list.
I would suggest putty instead of teraterm.
And OpenOffice instead of MS Office. (At least until MS Office supports ODF.)
Because you can't install PDFCreator?
You can't rent yourself -- a contract that would allow someone to do "anything" with your body would be invalid.

Except it came out better this time.
I own my person
If you actually owned your person, it would be possible to demand it as your property in payments for debts, so debt slavery would be legal.
Well finally someone to give a reason of why they disagree with me. I congratulate you for that.
Well I can't sell myself into slavery, but I can rent myself. As a matter of fact I do lease myself out for about 40 hours a week.
Yes property rights establish control, and regulating our property rights regulates our other rights.
How very English of you. So, is your Right to Free Speech based on "property rights"?

If they have dialup their mice have balls.

Errr...ever heard of the sun? That is powered by fusion and looks pretty exothermic to me.
True. Ok so you join atoms you get energy. You break apart atoms you get energy. Is there anuything endothermic that happens on the nuclear level.
If you want to kill everyone on a particular planet, vapourising its surface is way more efficient than trying to blow apart the planet.
But its not as pretty.
Better not. That thing would contribute to global warming a bit.
