The cable networks don't let it happen. The reason you can't download content now is because the cable operators networks to 5 minutes per half hour that they can stream over the internet. (It' has nothing to do with the production companies as mister tinfoil hat said, their content is already sold)

The same issue will affect this route as well. This may launch but there's not going to be much content behind it.

Microsoft's MSTV product has failed miserably as an OS in the current crop of thick client digital set-top boxes (the newest of which will all probably have PVR).

Currently the de-facto standard of choice for delivering Video On Demand to set tops is Mpeg 4 using SeaChange and nCube servers. (these servers require huge investments to a cable company) delivered to a variety of set-top boxes. I'd guess that this is actually the market that MS is trying to break into since it's failed miserably on the client side.

Going off the subject here but CSS/XHTML and Flash are two completely different things. Actually what's interesting about this is that with the multiple boxes and systems it may pass the burden of buying new boxes for services onto the consumer. With so many systems stuck with weak DCT2000 boxes in the homes If the MSO's can pass the cost onto the consumers for upgrading the boxes they can roll out next generation of services quicker and less expensively.

  15. LOL Sony is trying to sell it's own STBs on Sony Introduces Passage · · Score: 1

This is mostly Sony helping themselves (brilliantly) what is most likely happening here is that Sony is suddenly making a much belated entry into a field dominated by Scientific Atlantic and Motorola. The issue they are running into is that the MSO's and cable operaters are working on equipment that links the head-end to a particular set of set-top-boxes.

This technology allows cable operators to use the Sony boxes on systems that previously may have only allowed Motorola boxes.

Personally the Sony/Digeo Moxi box may be the coolest thing around.

MS WebTV is not a competitor. WebTV is just internet access in a box for your TV, that's not what these guys are developing. Microsoft has developed MSTV for use on set-top boxes but the whole thing was actually a huge fiasco for Microsoft and about 8 months ago they completely reorganized their MSTV outfit to either try again or get out of the biz.

The real joy of this is that of with the newest realeases of Mozilla and IE Front end developers have been able to write Javascript and CSS code for basically one platform the only "major" browser that had issues with it was Opera.

It sounds like with this release you should be able to write Javascript to the DOM specification and not get stuck writing 3 different versions of the same code and hit about 95% percent of the audience.

The speed issue isn't really that big, the DOM support will make many people's life much easier though.

I have to agree with whoever said that developing in Gecko is the best solution because if it works there it should work in IE (and usually also Opera if it's set to render as IE).

Really the newest Gecko releases, with DOM support are making it so much easier to write one codeset that will work on the big 2 NN6+ and IE. In the past ironically IE had the best DOM support but Gecko has quickly jump ahead. Actually whatever is used on the Mac really doesn't mean squat since "developing for IE" usually means developing for IE on the PC. IE on the Mac has actually traditionally been the hardest thing to develop for it's pretty much always sucked even worse than it's NN4+ counterpart. Even though that wasn't the greatest at least it pretty much worked the same on both platforms.

This exists in the US but it's rolling out relatively slowly. I think Insight has a rollout in the Atlanta area, Charter has a test going on St. Louis and Cablevision has this in the New Jersey area.

The issue in the US. is the actual boxes themselves. There is a huge cost overhead to delivering new boxes to all customers houses ($300-$500 per household) and there is no guarantee that there will be a significant cost return to the cable co. The importance of the announcement of a "universal" box is that the cable companies can pass this cost along to the consumer which will allow them to rollout additional services at a much lower cost.

Since the Cable Modem access basically runs off of a couple of unused channels (usually in the 70's somewhere) The only way to prevent the user from getting free basic cable is by filtering out the other channels (this actually would frequently be done at the house not always at the box).

When we moved into my old house we just told the installer that the cable modem people where able to get there first and that the regular cable TV installers were showing up "on wednesday" (actually true it was quicker to get the modem hooked up than the TV) So they didn't install the filter on the line. We got free HBO and Showtime as well though I'm not sure why.
