im on NTL ireland. cable modem is only 40EUR a month here. DSL pricing range. they start at about 40EUR from Esat, but you have to sign up for one of there telephony packages.
after google, the next major companies would be hosting companies, akamai, and some of the big film studios. when will SCO learn though? if they take google to court about this, and loose, like i hope they will, hopefully they will learn then. but who do you think will be next?
personally, i wouldent try an compete with apple. i actually would like an apple laptop my self, but not a lot of people would go for an apple because its not windows. this could be a problem for starting a company since i wouldent be selling windows either.
i have seen some of these white box laptop systems. all you have to do is put in a hard drive, ram and os. some come with CPUs already. if you did something like this and sold it cheap enough, you could get your foot in the student laptop market. same with pcs them selfs. interesting idea. now for a business plan......
im already running boinc on a few of the machines at home and work and it works cool. i especially like the built in queing and multi processor support.
What if the students dont have computers. i know it sounds stupid but in my college, my class of 18 students studying networking and software systems including computer programming and other computer tools, about 8 people have computers and of them 6 are good computers. the other 10 use the college. So what do you do then?
I think i heard someware that a place here in dublin was doing it. Dont know where. Some company ordered too much bandwidth and offered it to an appartment block beside. they took it needless to say and the price of appartments doubled! Now a nice appartment in dublin is uasally anything from 100k Euro +, and these ware selling for about 300k Euro! Anyway, if i was to get a nice 21century appartment i would require backup power! Definate requirement. lots of bandwidth is also required!
Macworld says that Job's said "We have thought than when we get a little spare time, we will look at taking it to Windows. We know the experience won't be as good, but we will probably look at that down the road." Hopefully someone has the sense to build a Linux driver! or even a *BSD driver:)
i wouldent want to get my hand stuck with that, anywhere, never mind there....

if you meen running two tasks at a time, yea it would slow it down, unless your on a dual processor system. but im not sure if i get what you mean.
they have a beta test on their site (http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/ap/). i just downloaded it, setup an account on the site and it works.
