What about the oil companies? Oh, I don't know...call me cynical but wasn't the gas we're putting in our cars today bought, paid for and process a long time ago? Why aren't we paying those prices instead of prices today?
I'm not Mr. anti-corporation or anything...but since these companies are experiencing the biggest profits in years (before this crisis btw) couldn't they just come out and say "we're going to do our part and drop the price of gas a whole dollar until this crisis is over". Right? Couldn't that help a hell of a lot of people?
Meh...just wondering. I'll admit I know nothing about finance or big business or how these things work. I'm just a simple back-woods farmer from a small town in Virginia.
Moog Music presents the award-winning minimoog Voyager Performer Edition, an all analog performance synthesizer incorporating virtually all of the functions of the original minimoog synthesizer, produced from 1971 to 1984, and a number of new features that makes this the minimoog for the 21st Century.
It's to put the fear of God into the end-user that downloads something. Yes yes...they're trying to go after the uploaders, even though by using Bittorrent you do become an uploader while you're downloading (at least you should...you fricken leeches you).
They want this gone. Many tactics in making it "gone". One is to go after the uploaders. Make big press with saying that "even though this 14 year old girl makes straight A's..we still took her down because what she was doing was illegal".
This hopefully (to the MPAA/RIAA) puts fear into people to not even go there. Try to cut off demand. Much like the idiotic attempt with the "war on drugs" with throwing some kid that smokes a joint into jail.
That's why they're going after bittorrent and everything else that's popular out there in terms of file sharing.
Usually it's the suburban white kids who try to act like this. Trying to imitate hip-hop or rap or whatever they're calling the bunch of guys with a rhyme dictionary and a drum machine nowadays.
It's all about trying to piss off their parents. Back in the 60's it was people smoking dope and growing their hair long. The 70's it was Mohawks and punk music. 80's was spiky hair and dying it pink or blue or both. The 90's was flannel shirts and not washing your hair. Now it's all about the imitating the "gangsta" rap. But even that is dying off. I fear what the next thing is to piss off your parents will be. Probably posting offtopic remarks on Slashdot.
I'm just saying...all the younger IT guys working at companies saying how stupid their bosses are and how they have to explain everything. They themselves DO get older...they move up in a company or get hired as a manager at a different company then all of a sudden everything's on the other foot. Do you really think your employees respect and admire you and think you're so smart? For one, the managers at larger corporations can't really be down in the trenches with the IT guys fixing and mending and installing things because they're ALWAYS at some idiotic meeting...so what happens to their skills? They atrophy. They grow stale. This isn't like riding a bike folks...you need to be on top of the industry and new technology...but there is only so many hours in a day.
So just keep in mind the boss you're bitching about today may actually be YOU tomorrow.
Quicker than Thunderbird or Outlook? Well, considering I use Thunderbird with Gmail through Gmail's free POP3 access, this is a moot point.
Quicker than Thunderbird or Outlook? See above.
Better than Thunderbird or Outlook? Again with the see above.
I already keep every mail that's not spam or duped in the replies, it's not nearly 2TB yet. Plus; it's not backed up! If keeping e-mails is important, don't you think it should be backed up? Yes, but is it stored off-site? A fire raged through my in-laws house destroying the computers AND the back-ups. Everything gone. They're Gmail stuff is still there though.
Reason I use Gmail is that it's my permanent Email from now on. If I change ISP's as I have in the past, don't have to worry about setting up a new email, don't have to worry about setting up Thunderbird etc etc. I can access the account anywhere securely.
No, never purchased one that refused to play on any player I've ever had. Ever. And I was a early adopter of DVD, having transfered over from Laserdiscs. So until that happens I can't really comment on it can I?
So you just don't watch movies on DVD? Is that some weird protest against the format or something? Or do you expect someone here to admire you for...what...nothing really. So what that DVD's have protection...they're fricken 20 bucks a disk. Pretty cheap to own for what you basically get. You can buy a book for that and guess what, it's a pain to copy them too! Do you protest books too?
I second the Python recomendation. It's a great language to learn concepts on and it's very powerful so it scales well when they get into higher level programming. Plus, it's cross platform on just about anything and everything that has a console.
Well, since it's the hardware manufacturers that build the drivers for their hardware and NOT the OS makers, perhaps Apple has something else up their sleeves. Perhaps these first Intel based Macs that are out now and the ones that will initially be sold is more of a stalling tactic so the hardware vendors can actually write drivers.
Also, whatever happened to an OS just listing what hardware is supported and what isn't? You build a computer with hardware that's not supported, then call Apple for support, they'll tell you right then it's not officially supported. Or even having companies like Dell or Gateway build "Apple Certified" hardware...which Dell or Gateway will support. The average user doesn't call Microsoft when they're having problems anyway, they call their vendor and complain to them. At least I always did.
Here's another rule of thumb, read my post again before commenting. I still stand by what I said. A news site should never have to apologize about anything. I don't care what the "article" says or not, I was commenting on any news organization apologizing for a story to someone to get back on their "good side". It doesn't matter that ZDNet was doing it out of sarcasm or not...I wasn't even addressing that. To repeat my point for the slow people such as yourself out there: Google needs to apologize for this PR fiasco. Perhaps the article from ZDNet will wake them up to that fact, but I doubt it.
Also, why do you even care? You have stock in Google or something? You've commented 5 times on this story.
I think it's wrong for ZDNet to apologize for anything. Just keep reporting what you will. Just always put in "Google declined comment when contacted for this story". So every story will be one sided against Google.
It's GOOGLE that needs to apologize for this PR fiasco. First rule of thumb for a publicly traded company: Don't piss off the press.
ather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

As Homer J. Simpson said: "that kid's about to learn the most important lesson in the music business... don't trust anyone in the music business"
Day of the Tentacle was 1993...as was Sam & Max Hit the Road.
And guess what there Slappy: Myst came out in 1993 as well. Don't belive me? Think I've been smoking crack? Ah...here's the Wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst
Myst didn't kill the adventure game.
# Day of the Tentacle (Maniac Mansion 2) (1993)
# Sam & Max Hit the Road (1993)
# Full Throttle (1995)
# The Dig (1995)
# The Curse of Monkey Island (1997)
# Grim Fandango (1998)
# Escape from Monkey Island (2000)
And that's just the LucasArts titles...
Anything else?
The great adventure games from LucasArts came out AFTER Myst came out. You underestimate how long ago Myst came out.
All the roads are? Didn't see that every road in the South was underwater or at the bottom of the Gulf.
Guess the gas stations that are gouging people with 6 dollar gallons of gas while they're trying to drive away from the area aren't really there then.
I give my food away...at least the parts I don't eat myself...
bah...okay...you found me out. Actually I'm a Graphic Artist from a small town in Michigan.

Doesn't Moog still sell analog synths?
From their website:

Polyethylene is in household garbage bags, and it is also an effective solar radiation shield.
Oh sure...they all laughed at me for wearing garbage bags instead of clothes but now...NOW who's the one laughing! Mwhahahahahaha!
Yeah, but that's the Rolling Stones. Lame lyrics when you get right down to it, but it was all over the news a few weeks ago.
Guess it's time I change it again.

True...I used a sucky analogy.

The best is getting a chicken because you feel like a complete idiot sitting there squawking 100 times or so.
And in the immortal words of Leeroy Jenkins: "at least I have a chicken".
I second the Python recomendation. It's a great language to learn concepts on and it's very powerful so it scales well when they get into higher level programming. Plus, it's cross platform on just about anything and everything that has a console.
Give it a look. Tons of resources out there also.

the NASCAR guys may really start entering space competitions like the X-Cup.
So you mean rednecks named Cooter are gonna be going into space?
Yeah, I have no idea about NASCAR and just preying on stereotypes...so sue me.
At the very moment, the FBI is cursing under their breath as they change their passwords from "fbi/fbi" to something else.
DAMN YOU SANCHO!
