  1. Utterly Useless on DHS Goes Ahead With 'Pre-Crime' Detection Project · · Score: 2

There's zero chance this will work how they think it will. From a great presentation at this year's DefCon:
Why Airport Security Can’t Be Done FAST

  2. Wines, cheeses, trees on Why Do We Name Servers the Way We Do? · · Score: 5, Insightful

A goofy naming scheme is a bad idea when you're running over 100 servers in a dynamic environment. When your servers are named after wines, cheeses, and trees, who can say what Oak does, or Chablis, or Feta, or Jujuba, or Sassafras, ad nauseum.

  3. Re:Ha! on Slashback: Australia, Nomenclature, Books · · Score: 1

Uh, no, it's not completely false. There have been lots of IE exploits that allow somebody you don't trust (i.e. outside of your "Local intranet" or "Trusted sites" zones) to execute arbitrary code on your machine. Ergo, you're 0wn3d.

Even a cursory search (e.g. at www.packetstormsecurity.com) would have turned up examples, like: http://packetstormsecurity.nl/mag/winsd/winsd.0308 00.txt

  4. Not that anybody will read this... on Diamonds - Are They Really Worth the Cost? · · Score: 1

But a totally viable alternative to Diamond is Moissanite. Better than Diamond in almost every way (except hardness, and even there it's pretty damn close). Check out: How Stuff Works or the manufacturer.

  5. Rollercoaster Tycoon on Good Games For Christmas? · · Score: 2

Have to forgive the lameness penalty it gets for having "tycoon" in the title. This game just freekin rocks. Addictive, fun, intuitive interface, and very well packaged into a great game. And it's been out long enough that you can pick up a (legal) copy for less than $20.

Plus hey, i even got my wife to play it!

That's because Flay is a putz. Would you want his dirty feet where you make your dinner? Besides, Morimoto rulz - i think that the tasting panel sided with Flay to keep him from being such a whining baby again...

  7. Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt... on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1
I was in this exact same situation. I was the the system administrator and all-around hold-the-damn-place-together guy for a regional ISP that i helped build from scratch (still remember sitting on the floor in a closet with our 2 servers and 4 modems trying to figure out how DNS worked...) We tried for 3-4 years to get funding. Our stupid management turned down one offer, and then the boss ignored the advice of the CFO and mis-stated the value of the company to another bona-fide offer. Instead of having safe secure parent company (that happed to have >$250mil in the bank for buying up ISPs), he tried to hold out for more money and we got exactly squat.

After years of promises, this was the straw that broke the camels' backs. I got up the guts to walk, got a better-paying job in the same town (not easy here!) with MUCH less stress. Went from constant migrains and heart problems (at age 26!) to peaceful bliss - still doing something i enjoy! Two weeks later the network engineer left too, so there was NO senior tech people left (clue factor there dropped to slightly above zero, but not much above).

Result? Company lost lots of their biggest clients cause service and reliability dropped, but they're still limping aling like always. Company loyalty only goes so far! Dont let it cost you your health or the food on your table!

  8. Big deal on Microwave T1 Service · · Score: 1

We've been doing this for over 3 years. Our gear is actually 3 megabits, although it isn't full duplex (i.e., NOT 3 each way, but 3 total). Take a look at http://www.breezecom.com. The real kick a$$ part of it is the low latency, 12ms ping times vs. 130 at best on a 56k modem (makes Quake weenies drool :)

It's really not a big breakthrough. At the last NANOG (http://www.nanog.org), there was a seminar on wireless, and just about every ISP in north america is going to be rolling this stuff out. Ask your ISP if they have plans to offer wireless, and if not get an ISP with more vision :P
