C'mon doesn't anyone watch Gilligan's Island anymore? Remember when Gilligan launches himself off the roof of a hut with a pair of wings flapping them.
loaded with an atomic bomb. Sure it might take weeks or months for a ship to pull into port. It doesn't have to be unloaded nor very powerful to shut a port down and cause tremendous local damage but even more economic damage.
I'll repeat myself. The carriers shouldn't oversell the network and set reasonable customer expectations. But if you want to rant against "socialist/facist/communist/liberal/lunatic tripe" be my guest. Whatever that means.
The problem is the AT&T and other carriers have oversold network capacity. They should build up to make sure the bandwidth is there. And until that happens I'd be OK with them throttling only on towers that are in danger of being swamped. Maybe even send out a notice to users saying, "Yes we suck at providing you with bandwidth, but there are a lot of users on this tower and we have to throttle the data speeds so others can use it. Consider laying off sucking up bandwidth for the next 15 minutes or so."
These people are no different than Young Earth Creationists (wouldn't be surprised if there was some overlap.). That is to say their views lead them to reject science rather than science informing their views. They should be learning to accommodate the science within their views. Denying reality leads to disaster.
Here's the thing instead of funding a campaign to sow fear, uncertainty, and doubt, why don't they fund actual science? Left and right should be debating on what to do about human caused global warming and not whether or not it is happening.
for their efforts. Normally, I'm opposed to most of what they do and stand for, but it's nice that we can find common ground (which is sorely lacking in our modern political discourse). Yes, a lot of asshole Democrats kept supporting it and will get their ass handed to them in November if they keep this shit up. I hope progressive candidates challenge those recalcitrant Dems who still support SOPA/PIPA/ACTA the way Tea Partiers challenged incumbent Republicans did in 2010 (although there's was an astroturf campaign funded by the likes of the Koch brothers and FreedomWerks).
I've managed to find my niche as a freelance web developer, but I know in another two years I'll need to up the ante and call myself a consultant developer or something.
At first reading this blurb I thought, "Ah another concern troll." but when I went to the article it was posted on the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists website. The essay isn't nearly long enough and I don't have time to deconstruct it, but the author does have some valid points to make. I say we need to transition to less destructive and more sustainable forms of energy and transform our lifestyle to using less resources. And we really need to think through the implications of what "renewable energy" really means.
I think the reason why Linux took of so quickly was because of all the gnu software out there already. Basically it was a car waiting on an engine. And when that engine arrived it took off. Thanks Linus and everyone who contributed to it.
to buy Netflix. I'm not happy about it either. My Netflix viewing habits have changed where I mostly watch streaming. When the raised prices back in December 2010 I dropped from the 3 DVDs at a time to 2. So my price point stayed the same. I'll drop to 1 DVD now because there are still things that aren't streaming.
I've already experienced a REALLY LOUD PERSON talking on a train. The car didn't have that many passengers and we were about to move to another car when he ended the call.
If planes switched to fiber optics and got rid of copper wiring I'm sure that would reduce the likelihood of interference. I can hardly wait for the day people will be able to use their cell phones on those long haul flights.
is the answer. The amount of ignorance in the highly rated comments is astounding. No one understands exponential growth. The simple example is of the water lily and the pond. The water lilies double in number every day and will completely cover the pond in thirty days. At what point do humans notice a problem? On day 29 when the pond is half covered.
Humans are already past the sustainable limit. Now we may come up with new technologies that make the current population sustainable. The Haber-Bosch process allows the Earth we support 2 billion more people than it would otherwise. It would take 6 Earths to sustain everyone at American style standard of living. The future is hard to predict. We have some pretty good ideas of what is likely to happen but how it unfolds may be very different than how we imagined it. With climate change overuse of resources and reduction in biodiversity humanity is potentially heading towards a disastrous collapse. However we have a lot of bright people trying to prevent that from happening. And if food becomes scare, well, we'll always have Soylent Green.
I was hoping these would be hilarious reviews of the Newt "I had a hard on for America so I fooled around" Gingrich's books. I'd love to see Amazon tags on his stuff like there is on Jonah Goldberg's execrable Liberal Fascism. Some of my favorites are "doughy pantload", "books written while high on cheeto dust", and "cheeto-erotic asphyxiation".

Skipper: "Gilligan what are you doing?"
Gilligan: "Skipper, I'm going to fly for help."
Skipper: "Gilligan you can't fly!"
Gilligan: "I can't?"

I guess you never heard of the robo-signing scandal.
Also you must be rich because you have no empathy.
But only because they don't interact with peasants.

I stopped being a libertarian when I realized it wasn't workable, and that it never worked. Mike Huben has a great Non-Libertarian FAQ and Critiques of Libertarianism.

Yup. At least this is a good one. First it was Nazis, then it was the most complete copy of Metropolis found and now lager yeast.

Agreed snakes would be so much better.
