Heh, in what I like to call a "Data Center" there can be several layers of physical security before any one person can get to a box to get to root as the local user.
So the idea is once the computer is provisioned, it's put behind several locked doors and only X number of people have direct console access. These are usually people who have proven themselves not to be k1dd13z.
So, once it's sitting in the data center, it's that much harder to run a brute force attack on the root account.
Sure, a cracker could still get root by dropping into single user mode at the command line and changing the root password there, but if he/she is there, you have bigger problems.
This is not the way it works in the world of business. If they were so eager to have Linux certified personelle they'd pay for the training themselves and then pay new hires $40k to $43k rather than offering $45k AFTER they pay up and get the training.
It's either a scam, or a very poorly executed recruitment drive. Either way, I personally would steer clear.
Want to get a Linux job? The best way is probably to participate in the community as much as possible, then put THAT on a resume... example; "Contributed port X for Linux, fixed bugs Y and Z".
They have verisign.com don't they? They aren't BASED out of China, are they? I'll frown on China for a LOT of things, but denying non-Chinese companies chinese domains is not one of them:)
Hmm... It wouldn't cache the web site, just X ammount of the meta headers, and a brief description of the content. I had an idea that the search could be protected by a signed PGP(GPG) key so that it couldn't be modified by 3rd parties...
Yeah, so instead of waiting on our butts for the overpriced and overhyped Pentium 4, I think it's time people moved on to the other processors that are out there, like Athalons and G4s. I've been running MacOS X for about a week and a half now and I'm very impressed. I'd love to see a FreeBSD port to this arch, and I'm really looking forward to actually being able to test-drive a Linux.
Yeah, if you WANT to be "that guy", go ahead and do it. It's a concious decision wether you become the guy that simply sits back and writes the schedule, or if you're actually a respected and commanding force that makes the lives of the techies you manage enjoyable. It's your choice really. As far as getting in to the role, get ready to deal with a lot more politics than you're used to.
Poliics, politics and meetings. Politics with lunch. Politics when you come back from vacation.
He's got some real points. Yes, a dual G4 BeOS box WOULD be nice. Yes, MacOS X's SMP support just MIGHT be better for a while or in the long run. Maybe Linux's SMP support ISN'T the best.
I can understand from a hobby standpoint why you'd want to fool around with your processor speed, but I mean there's a REASON they're shipped at the speeds they are. And please, tell me one good reason why anyone would choose speed over stability*? Especially when you've got the insane clock speeds you have now AS IT IS. With all the other factors that make a computer slow, processor would be the last thing I'd look at these days.
Try underclocking and buying more ram.

One of the big steps the free software community has taken was to make things usable, and I think E, Gnome and KDE have done this. I'm not going to say outright that the user interface in Windows is unusable, because it's not bad, but they should really look to design something that works better and looks different. I don't think people will be scared off if there isn't that little start button down at the bottom. I mean hell, even Microsoft didn't take the safe approach when they ADDED the Start button. How many people knew how to use that when it first showed up?
Right on. Of all the 3D shooters, I think the original Quake still holds the most charm to it. If you're looking for pure deathmatch, sans frills, Quake is it. From what I understand this'll mean I'm one step closer to the Win98 purge.
Rob probably gets the same deal other industry folks usually get, X number of shares over X number of years. Besides, how would this lead to some Slashdot coverup... IN FACT since when has Slashdot been in a position to cover something up?
Anyway, the current "plummet" is just an over due correction AFAIK. If any companies go under because of this it's because they weren't doing anything to begin with.
And I was so looking forward to the wedonothing.com IPO;)
SOMETHING to angst about, perpetually. I read the statments made by the guy behind this, and honstly, I think there's more truth and heart in the "Andre The Giant Has A Posse" stickers. I'm all for RPGs... All too often though RPGs are the domain of the standard issue Tolkien-esque universe... Fireball spells, long-swords, skinny hats. Never been my bag, but I always participated because I loved the multiplayer aspects of MUDs.
Well I'm out of the closet now. I loathe mixing regents, I hate kings, queens, dukes, elves, hobbits, pretentious frickin' bards, preachy knights... I dislike chain-link armour.
Now, an argument can be made that if one wants sci-fi type multiplayer adventure, they should be playing Half-Life, or UT. I say nay! I wanna build a character who can weild dual pulse-cannons or whatever!
Back it up, mage boy, I got me some killer robots to smash.
(no, not as lame as it sounds, I got the sudden image of some lame-ass with bleach-blonde hair screaming "hack the planet!") I think people already mess with the onboard electronics of Honda Civics to give them that much more performance power, something I'd like to try myself if I ever got one.
Anyway, where I'm going with this is if motor-vehicle electronics keep going the way they are, and with stuff like this, I figure there'll be a cottage industry for hacked components. I'd like to see a whole replacement set you can bypass automotive lameness if you want to ('course, you might KILL yourself in the process, but hey..)

Yeah, don't be dazzled by the fdisk implimentation, it's not as ugly as it looks, actually you'll come to respect it. The easiest way to figure out how to cut up the space if you are just fooling around with it (not on a production box) is to take the numbers you see and divide them by 2.
So take your entire HD, figure out how much swap space you want, subtract that number and make your primary partition first, then add the swap. If you make the swap the first partition it gets ugly (in my experience).
Cheap, not totally accurate, but it worked nice for me.
Once you're done, add the initial packages you want, and your system is pretty much ready to be added to using pkg_add and an ftp:// URL.
That pretty much sums it up. I don't really want to work on any "pseudo-free" code, debugging for some large corporation. The whole idea behind GNU/Linux, and other free UNIXes is that it IS in fact free of sleazy constraints imposed by marketing managers etc...
Of course, I haven't read the Sun license in detail, and what I read made my eyes cross. Am I wrong? Is it better than I suspect?
Barring some miracle in game technology in this new supposed game console, they're gonna get stomped. Nintendo (who make Microsoft look developer friendly) will dominate this market for a long time to come, I've seen the pattern for years...
Sega releases new product first, blasts the hype.
Nintendo releases late, but the product is so much better that everyone buys it regardless of wether they bought the other system.

That's like $800 us;) Still pricy but you can get some good condos out here for even less. We seem to be in the middle of a building boom. The only things you have to put up with is Winter and our government.
The proof is in the iBook. It's running the OS-X public beta fine, with the Classic envoirnment and Outlook Express chugging away in the background.
The proof is in the pudding, or in this case the blue and white "purse" thing I own.

I like many Linux distros, but the developers had a very good reason for picking OpenBSD over a Linux distro.
Bullet proof VPN, and not a fast IPO, I think was the goal here. Check out the article, it's neat.
