  1. I am sick of hearing about "the tiny minority" on Holocaust Dropped From Some UK Schools · · Score: 3, Insightful

    >>Doesn't have to be a large majority. Just a vocal minority that causes the problems.
Yes, and all the members of Jeffry Dahmer's first-grade class grew up to be law-abiding, upstanding citizens, except for one. Yet there were still many dead victims. What's your point? This line about the "minority" of violent muslims doesn't mean a damned thing, so long as that minority has 1) influence and 2) the ability to project power, which I argue it does.

    >>There are a lot of peace-loving muslims around the world.
So simply going by the numbers, if only a percentage or two of Muslims worldwide are violent that means there are A LOT, tens of millions(!), of hate-filled Muslims worldwide, ready to erupt into violence. And they do, although you may have to dig deep into the news to find the stories. You see, all but one of the 21 "hot" wars in the world involve Islam as one of the parties. Bet you didn't know that.

You see, the problem is a culture fueled by religious extremism and fanaticism. The Koran is an instruction manual for waging war and spreading influence. (No, that's not slanderous or "flamebait" -- go read the damned book and see for yourself. Sura after Sura specifies precisely how violence should be applied to spread Islam. You are either in the House Of Islam, or the House of War. There is no other option. And, you should know, all those Suras which are oft-quoted and preach peace with the Infidel, are "overridden" by later Suras which specify violence.
And, before you go quoting sections of the Christian bible (Old Testament) which proscribe stonings or other violent actions, be aware it's not a fair comparison. You see, there are no Christians ACTUALLY PERFORMING THESE ACTS. Christianity went through The Reformation, wherein it shrugged off many of these proclamations as archaic and incompatible with modernity. Islam has had no such event.

    >>Everyone can look forward to more crap and less service as the new AT&T tightens its grip.
Precisely! And higher prices since the need to innovate and compete is now removed. The "new" AT&T is shaping up to be darned similar in topography and attitude to old Ma Bell.

Is anyone really surprised here? "The New AT&T" was just formed from the merger of a number of competitors -- several companies which had to fight against one another and be creative and attractive to win customers realized that, by merging, they could efectively quit trying and capture these customers by default. The only problem is VOIP -- customers being able to reach outside the traditional telephone providers for voice services -- so they simply ban it and drop these customers in the rudest manner, not even porting the phone #s. Typical attitude of a monopoly-in-the-making. It's not merely coincidence that Vonage is under attack. The whole industry is terrified of VOIP and is using everything in their power (including the courts, lawmakers and near-monopoly market share) to crush innovative new competitors, just like the cable TV companies fought (and continue to fight) Satellite providers.

There is no excuse for not porting telephone #s. I'm normally quite averse to dragging everything through the courts, but here I think it's appropriate. Perhaps a huge class-action lawsuit would gain the attention of the suits at "the New AT&T" and provide remedy to the affected customers.
Personally, I'll be researching alternatives this weekend so I can drop Bell South.. uh, I mean "The New AT&T". They've shown how little they respect their customers. Time to take my money elsewhere. Packet8? SunRocket? Maybe it's time to drop the home phone altogether and simply go cell-only.

Just out of curiousity, can anyone name a company that got *better* after a merger? (Meaning better for customers and/or employees, not simply better for the boardroom or short-term stockholders as is typical.) I can't think one example.

Somebody forgot to tell all these muslim "women" I see shuffling around in their habibs/burquas. (I put that in quotes, because, with a full face mask, who knows what's under there?) Most states have laws against wearing hoods/masks in public. Balaclavas, habibs, Klan hoods, etc are all prohibited (for the public good, I might add) however political correctness (read: cowardice) has exempted the Muslims and their leftist fellow travelers I see trumpeting their stupidity at "war protests."

By the way, a number of AlQueda terrorist suspects have been caught in the UK wearing habibs during their attempt to flee authorities. And at least one jewelry store heist was accomplished by theives hiding their weapons (and faces) under the hoods.

Straying just a bit off topic, I just want to know where are the feminists are... you know the ones who burned their brassieres in the '60's because they were viewed as an societal-imposed limit upon their freedom courtesy of Mr. Man. (Gotta say I never really understood that argument. As if having saggy tits and hairy pits makes you free? Whatever.) However, feminists are conveniently turning blind eyes towards Muslim women being forced by their men to shuffle around in a black sack and have their clitoris hacked off with a scalpel at puberty is somehow acceptable in a modern society. I think the word I'm looking for here is "Hypocrites."

  22. A surprise to ANYONE? Blame government/attorneys on Cancer Drug May Not Get A Chance Due to Lack of Patent · · Score: 1, Insightful

Of COURSE no pharma company would spend tens of millions (or more) to conduct clinical trials on a drug they couldn't sell! It's a simple fact of business -- even in the extraordinarily small chance that the drug proves 1) effective and 2) safe, it would have to be sold in sufficient quantity to return a profit. Otherwise, it's a guaranteed loss.

For all those who see something wrong in this (and I'm talking to the Big Pharama Conspiracy crowd here... the same bunch who believes in the 200MPG carburettor stories), perhaps you'd like to cough up some money out of your personal budget to cover the costs and risks of conducting these trials and persuing FDA approval. If all goes well, you could then give away the results for the betterment of mankind. But talk is cheap.

And don't even get me started on liability issues. Just ask John Edwards (former Vice Presidential candidate) how much money is to be had by suing drug companies. There are legions of attorneys standing by waiting to pounce on any perceived harm, no matter how obscure or rare.

Both of these costs discourage drug development such as this one, and force "Big Pharma" to be especially risk adverse.

    Blame government and attorneys.

But so long as you're giving a signal to the camcorder to sample (either @ 16 bit or 24 bit resolution) and don't need more than two tracks, synch is not an issue. It compresses the video in realtime along with the audio track.

However, if you're needing more than two tracks (for example, recording a musical act or a stage play, etc.) then I could see how you'd need an external multitrack recorder and this camera isn't designed for that. However, you could do it the old-fashioned-way and simply use a snapboard to mark the beginning of the scene.

It's the only feature missing from an otherwise sensational HD camcorder -- the ability to use a dynamic shotgun mic or condensor mics and a phantom power mixer to pull in professional-quality audio which matches the brilliant HD picture. I've not yet cracked it open, but it should be as simple as adding a stereo 1/8" audio jack wired in parallel with the factory mic, a DPDT switch, a sharp drill and nerves/balls of steel (needed to crack open a $1000 toy and start drilling/soldering and undoubtedly voiding the 1-year warranty).
