That's right. Just stop the smoking, drinking heavily, stop the junk food and get out and get some moderate exercise would prevent many if not most of the heart disease (and stroke) in the World. Not smoking would also prevent a lot of impotence too. It would be much more cost effective to spend a fraction of the money on education than whiz bang, usually obscenely expensive, gadgetry.

    Yep.

This machine here that I'm using has had the motherboard replaced twice. The main hard drive with the XP license is still going strong. When that hardrive craps out, I'll put a new one in and make it a Linux box - I refuse to pay the retail price for Windows. Until MS drops the price down to the "MS Tax" rate for retail versions of Windows, I will not buy a retail copy - full version or upgrade.

And then there are the folks who tried the upgrade path only to have to buy the full version anyway because of installation problems and lack of XP license disk - even then, some folks still had problems. I'm not willing to chance it at the prices MS charges.

What's this "might" be helped. I take it your referencing the Snake River dams?

The salmon on the river are declining rapidly and the major cause are the dams. Those dams are pretty much supplying the excess power allowing obese Americans to sit on their asses to watch the power hungry big screen TVs, computers, video games, and all those electronic gadgets that all of a sudden the "need".

Then there are the farmers who use that water behind the dam to grow their nutritionally deficient crops that just make us more obese as a nation. But what's more of a crime against the fish, is that the farmers are on welfare. Not only are they getting this water thanks to the Government, but they're also getting their subsides to grow their crap. If more of us were able to eat that wonderful and expensive Salmon, we'd have much better health. But unfortunately, the prices are high because of their declining populations. Farming fish is not a solution because they are fed corn which lowers their Omega-3 fatty acid content drastically; as well as polluting the river even more. Farmed fish also affects the wild stock. Farmed fish is crap, too.

There are no need for those dams or the power if we Americans would just learn to stop being such power pigs. We are just 4% of the World's population but we use 25% of the World's oil. The percentage is even higher for total energy consumption. We are gluttons.

Creating more power generation isn't the answer. It's using less of it. And don't forget, there's solar, wind, and geothermal too.

    OTH...

Apparently, KSC has layoffs pretty regularly. I once talked to this young man with a young family who was laid off in a round a couple years ago. He blew through his saving and was supporting his family with credit cards until he was "recalled". I didn't talk to him that long so I didn't get to understand the hiring layoff cycles down there - I got the impression it was similar to the way some of the rust-belt industries used to operate before they went completely out of business.

Anyway, this layoff is going to decimate the local economy. We'll be seeing a HUGE surge in foreclosures in that area as well as other defaults.

The economists love to point to "creative destruction" and point out people just need to get "retrained" and other trite economist expressions but it's always easier said that done. The thought of skilled workers, engineers and scientists having to work at Walmart - if they're lucky enough to get a job there - is pretty disheartening.

Economists love to point out that we just need more training - that seems to be their catch all solution for workers who are put out of work. But where does a rocket scientist go from there; especially a middle aged one?

And even then, just pick out any hot job area and can that area support all people getting into it?
