Oh those flashy annoying things.....I vow to click on any add that dare do something as "daring" as a simple descriptive hyperlink...(Because it is easy on the eyes, and does not suck up the bandwidth.) I will not click on any add that dares think I will be swayed by a flashy, ever changing GIF file that says --- "Oh if I can not catch your attention with this frame..let's try another 1 or 10 or 20..
Sorry..Ventured offtopic a bit.
Yea -- would it not suck to pay all the lawsuits, quiet all the critics, sell out all your morals and then still be faced with the issue of "how in the hell do we make a profit..."
I know it has already been said -- but look at the "successful" e-companies like amazon.com that actually do have a product and actually do have a revenue stream going in both directions -- and yet they still have 1 foot in the grave and lots of people with shovels.
IMHO -- in the end, the only good sights will be the ones ran by lottery winners who happen to get a kick out of running a website and loosing a little money. (and don't mind a few lawsuits)
Because the poor record companies are sure that I was borrowing my friends CD's and beaming them to mp3.com and listening for free....I mean I can at least see where they are going after Napster because of BLATENT pirating going on...But my.mp3.com was as legit as possible....I mean you had to own the CD to be able to listen (unless you wanted to break the law...and at that point their is no stopping anybody...I mean you could just rip the CD the old fashioned way...)
And further more, the best feature was the fact that you could actually purchase REAL CD's from the partner vendors and then be able to listen to them while you were waiting for the Snail Mail to drop off the shrinkwrap....(How is that not a win-win situation for the record labels, vendors, mp3.com, and the consumer!!!)
Basically all this says to me is that the RIAA says fuck the consumer....
Note to RIAA: None of my friends even own any of the CD's that I prefer...So buzz off...
The record companies still claim they will give ME the (ex)consumer a legal way to partake of technology -- but by smashing one of the only companies that came up with a feasable solution where everyone in the food chain could possibly flourish -- I know that it is just a blatent lie...I think that my.mp3.com was only a few months away from revolutionizing how CD's were purchased online, (hell, I bought 10 or 11 CD's from their partner sites, in the same timeframe that I usually would have made it to the brick and mortar's only 1 or 2 times -- only to find that their poorly stocked shelves did not contain anything worth listening to.....)
Wow...Between this company taking 5 years to write barcode software and IBM saying it would cost 6 gazillion dollars to add ALT tags to it's Olympic sites -- I realize that maybe I am working in the wrong place....(You see, I am kinda lazy and underpaid -- so I would love to work somewhere where I could spend 5 years on a device driver/Barcode reader or get paid $1000 dollars for each ALT tag.)
I understand web sites need to have banner ads to be profitable....But why must banner ads always (or most of the time) be so tastless? I mean a text based ad, or a static banner or two is fine with me, (and if it is a product I am interested in, I would be just as likely click on a static image or text based link..) But when you have all these flashy multi frmaed.gif files all over your page(s) that always distract from the layout and artistic work gone into the design of the page, and increase loads from 30-40K to over 100K -- it is really TASTELESS...
I may be weird -- but I would like to think of some web sites as "works of art" -- and most banner ads as "grafitti"....I mean what would most art lovers think if they went to a museum and their were flashing banner ads on all of the Picaso's and Rembrandt's???
My goal is to have each device on my machine use a different interface!!! (SARCASM ON)That would be Cool(SARCASM OFF)
SCSI for my Jaz
FireWire for my Camcorder
USB for my Rio
Parallel for my Printer
PS/2 for my mouse
Serial for my Dig Cam
and finally....drumroll please....
USB2 for that Scanner I have needed for a long time...
Just like the good old days of trying to find Apple shrinkwraps in the isles of you favorite software store...Their would be mountains of x86 software and then a little "courtesy" section for the Apple freaks that had 4 or 5 pieces of software.....
Most sites will never use the bandwidth alloted them (for the $19.95 a month)-- and if they do -- then they are a success...And if the creator did not want a success then he/she/they can simply disappear...Look at TV -- I can watch it for free or for a reasonable fee with cable (more channels) -- and I do not have Bart Simpson crying in his beer trying to make me feel bad because I did not personally send him 10 bucks and now they can't afford to film the show anymore....(But I did buy a hat, shirt, etc..because I thought he was cool...Thus -- Bart and the gang give me a 30 minute recess each day -- and I don't have to feel guilty)
...or is this a contest to see who can sue over the silliest things?...I would love to see a judge laugh stuff like this out of the courtroom...and then demand that the silly people making these lawsuits repay ME the taxpayer for all of the money taken from my pocket....Or can us the taxpayers sue these companies (One click shopping, hyperlinks, tabbed widgets) for wasting our money after the judge laughs them out of court...
I am just waiting for someone to lay ownership to the SUBMIT and CANCEL buttons...
What ever happened to the good old days when tech support could just say --- "Yes, thats related to a bug in Windows -- and wont be fixed until the next release, sorry not our problem..." Now in the Linux world people need to have the skill and the know how because the source is their to fix any problem....As to before they could pay someone $6 bucks an hour to say "Not our problem"....
Now we can "Call their bluffs" when they try to take the easy route....
-2 Dressing like Rambo, hanging out with losers, and forgetting that some
protesters in the past (dressed like Rambo) have chosen to speak with bombs and guns...And it's the cops who have the fun job of deciding who may be deciding to plant some C4 next door to a day care center.
-1 Bad mouthing the cops (who like it or not, have a job to do...)
-2 Writing a big old long article on/. that (based on it's content) makes it appear that the protest was for the sake of testing out police vs. citizen interaction rather than trying to get people to take notice of a very worthy cause.
I would think with the issues at hand, the American public would rather see examples of the downtrodden individuals, and here of their painful exploits and endeavers rather than having a bunch of camoflauge wearing, potty mouth spewing, militiants marching the streets and then talking about how "the man" unjustly searched
and suspected that someone with camos, a backpack, and a militant tone of voice -- may just pose a danger to the peace.
"Same goes for software; you can program nmap to check for weak spots in your network, but you can use this tool for good and for bad."
I think this is really similar to saying you and have the right to buy a gun to protect us from all the bad guys who have guns.....And looking at the track record for gun control, I don't think a realiastic solution for this will ever reach past the stalemates or catch-22's that have bogged down the lawmakers, polititions, or lobbyists.
The only difference being that the gun advocates can always point to the "Right To Bear Arms" in the constitution as reason enough for drugged out inner city kids to keeped stocked in Handguns and armor piercing rounds...And we can point to the "Freedom Of Speech" as our corner stone to allow people to disrupt current copyright laws....
I finally get it -- The whole Mozilla effort is a trick from Netscape that will make the whole world think and say: "Well I guess Netscape 4.7 is not so bad after all..." Kind of like reverse phsycology. (BTW -- I have been using every milestone since M9 and every nightly build since 04012000, just looking for a glimmer of hope) Galeon looks pretty good, but still crashes a bit to much for me.
This is an honest question to the people that think napster is "bad".
Is it wrong for me to search for and download songs from artists that produced CD's/Tapes that are no longer available to purchase...(oop out of print)...In my mind I would gladly pay for this music if it was made available, however since it is not...Who is to tell me that it is wrong to download it from some lucky soul who was able to purchase a copy when it was available?
And dont tell me to look for an import copy, or to scour ebay -- I have no interest in paying more for a CD/Tape than what the original artists make in a week pumping gas after the record companies gave them the boot 15 years ago.....
Thats my point -- Why do not they (RIAA/Greedy record execs) spend some time and money on making available to me, the music I would gladly buy...Instead they stop making the music, thus it's not on the shelf...And a used copy on ebay would cost me more than half of these old band members make in a week pumping gas at the corner station after their record companies sent them down the river after their albums did not go gold or platinum.....
I for one will speak with my wallet. My $50 a week CD buying "habit" has just gone on vacation. And the sad part of it is that their may be no coming back from vacation....When I first decided to "Cut" Metallica out of my life -- I assumed it may be for a few weeks until I cooled off...Well needless to say, once my favorite band -- I still cannot stand to listen to them on CD, tape, LP, Radio and especially not MP3 (and would gladly send all above media to burn at any vigal that is organized, or to burn in hell.)
It will sadden me to do it -- but at this point I do not think I will ever again be able to walk through the hollow doors of a music store again, and my nose will never get to smell the sweet aroma of a freshly opened CD or Tape....So be it...Cheers to the people who fight the good fight...
And all this because I thought I could snag a few mp3's from the tapes or CD's I did not get a chance to purchase while they were in production.
Well it looks like they are putting the code where their mouth is...(IE -- It's not biased or arrogant if they can back it up)...A little bit of show boating in the free software industry seems healthy to me....(Since their is no monitary reward -- people are taking payment in pride and bragging rights...)
That is the difference between established acts/authors and unestablished acts/authors.
I will take a risk for the proven content....I am paying Stephen King 90% for quality earned by previous works. I would only pay an unknown author/act AFTER hearing the goods....
Like it or not, this is what the people have been asking for. I have yet to here the Slashdot crowd comment on the fact that this is being published in an UN-Encrypted manner....
Using "Slashdot" math --
I wonder if the 500 people that commented last time around that they would only buy "internet" books if they did not require "special" software to decode would buy this book on the honor system? This also inderectlly relates to the thousands of people who have complained that they only use Napster because the $17 bucks for a CD is to expensive....Well -- what if the music industry said -- OK -- 50 cents a track, you download them and then send us a check...And then you find out that many of the "$17 is to much" idiots are now saying "$4.50" is to much....
I for one am a HUGE Stephen King fan -- and am glad that he is offering me a medium to download his work for a great price -- and also maintain the freedom to have it in a format that I can convert to read on my palm, not have to wait in line in bookstores, not having to pay "hardcover" prices, etc...etc...
I would hope the "Free Riders" that are always complaining about having to pay for anything -- do not ruin this.
To top it off: As I told a friend today as to why my hatred of Microsoft was much deeper than his -- "From 1987-1997 I paid (lots) of real green money for bad products -- which gives me a legitimate beef VS. someone who "pirated" for those 10 years -- and still bitches...."
And how was what this kid doing not illegal?
I noticed that one can now find Corel in the Cut out bins at best buy...$9.99 (right next to 50000 tt fonts and clipart for the holidays).
