The job of the board is return value to stock holders by holding the CEO accountable. Selling off the assets is not a value proposition, it reduces long term revenue potential. Meyer failed to produce value , revenue growth, or strategic vision for that matter - ergo she failed her job and will appropriately be held accountable.
We'll we see "apps" that unlock cars - and the consequences are hackers killing running vehicles remotely as they go - (already in the wild)
The real push for things like Google nest that's constantly monitoring everything you do so it can sell a more detailed profile to advertisers.
Even facebook has begun selling dark profiles (people who don't have FB accounts but are talked about by people who do) to marketers.
The problems are privacy and security - neither of which marketers or law enforcement give 2 shits about.
There's 2 things always required to become a 'tech hub', neither of which Denver has. First is money - and the article points out that Denver has no corporate HQ's.
Second, is a world class education community that feeds technology and is benefactored by the first requirement (money) .
Unless there's a tech school University of Denver that's on the same caliber as CIT or UW, this is just smoke
That may be true ---- but the great equalization of 1929 happened and many of the oligarchy jumped out windows.
A guy who makes $7.29M per year over an average staff wage (c) $11K per year is more part of the problem than the solution.
All of the negatives listed are similar to the ethanol debacle. Yet despite ethanol’s negative energy production, it’s been mandated by law in most States. It proves that common sense, logic, chemistry and math have little to do with energy – it’s all about who has the opportunity to get rich.
My wife is a corporate execute for a company with operational offices all over the country. Video conferencing doesn't cut it. She needs to be on premise, or you just don't get the understanding of what's going on. most often the culprit is bad site management, who can be quite adapt at hiding issues if you're not on site. It's in the health care field and these issues can be life or death. non-flight isn't an option. .
The Department of Energy was created by the stroke of an executive government pen during opec oil embargo to eliminate/reduce US dependency on foreign oil. Oil Shale has rendered the Department pointless, so yes - get rid of it...
Again, the largest percentages of Federal spending are:
25% is health care
24% is social security
So, 1/2 our annual outlay has zero to do with paying any wages.
Reading the article, I would have to say it’s naive and willfully ignorant. The author makes claims that by reducing big government (ie. Eliminating staff) cost savings will reduce the deficit to the point of providing universal basic income. Anyone who’s spent more than 5 seconds looking at the debt knows the biggest contributors to the national debt are entitlements - which has zero to do with the number of government employees.
Climate change deniers are a symptom of the larger problem. We have in the United States a wholesale attack against science in general. Fracking causing earth quakes and contaminating ground water, intelligent design, global warming, corporations have human rights, are just a few of the battle fronts in this war. The purchasing of propaganda power of largest ½ dozen companies in the world combined allow them to do anything – change any law, commit any crime, plunder any resource in any country anywhere on the planet. Anyone with a contrary view must be discredited at any cost. The only way to reverse the trend in the US is to change how the election process is funded. Make politicians accountable to voters not oligarchy who currently buy and sell them.
Members of today’s oligarchy were once idealistic Woodstock goers. Just as today millennials will grow into responsibility and power and they too will do what it takes to keep the status quo and silence opposing opinions.
Clocks are everywhere - the lower left corner of my computer, every single room at the office, the radio in my cars, my ever present smart phone, in my GPS when I'm trecking back woods - why on earth would I wear a watch?
The allure of a wrist worn multi-function pseudo-smart device is somewhat appealing, till the reality of virtually useless battery life and 50 year old eyes stomp out practicality.
This is the result of the globalization put and free trade zones. Free trade (without tarriff) only work when both sides have the same to gain or lose.
Did Steve Jobs care that he moved 1 million i-device making jobs to China?
No, he was able to side step labor, environment, intellectual property laws and buy is 100Million yacht. Who cares of a million US citizens lose the ability to pay rent, buy food, have health care when there's a 1.5 Bl Chinese and another billion Indians clamoring for your shiny toys?
Absence of conscious and social responsibility while employing Federal Law enforcement to ensure to profitably via some artificial intellectual property ruse has undermined the "Land of Opportunity, Home of the Free and the Brave". America isn't first in anything anymore. Quite honestly, the only way to get it back is campaign finance reform.
Being that people have been claiming nobody is paying attention to IoT security, it reminds me of Clark's first Law
"When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right."
The obvious solution is to invalidate the authentication keys so no longer work. It's simple, can be performed digitally, and all those stolen keys are instantly useless. The rightful owner can prove themselves and new keys issued.
Why wait for hundreds of thousands of bogus authorizations with the same keys then cry about it - unless you have an agenda.
This was all Daryl McBride, former CEO of SCO. For a while, he was the most hated man on the internet. He was hitting every company he could find using Linux with a copyright infringement demanding payola. Many companies just paid to make it go away, Chrylser for example paid. There was a great website dedicated to this long painful process, I can't remember at the moment but some gal named Pam documented the entire process and translated the legaleze to English for the following techies.
What a huge waste... IBM's startup disks used to be Linux based. Boot, configure RAID, etc was all Linux. Now it's some stripped down Windows device code that takes 10 times longer to load, has less features and is less user friendly.
Micro$soft must have had a huge bounty up to get big blue to switch... all rendering this case rather... pointless....
Reading this site, you likely work in tech.. Few people outside of the tech industry understand the ramifications of this or the National Security Agencies desire to eliminate encryption completely. My wife is in healthcare, her eyes gloss over when I start discussing this stuff, or how important it is. Like most freedoms, people won't care till they're gone.
Online commerce, purchasing, banking, and the global economy couldn't have happened without crypto.
Let's dispel the paranoid illusions of an overzealous cop and come to reality.
This is nothing new - Texas has altered memories for decades! Global warming is a liberal conspiracy, fracking does not contribute to earth quakes, the United States was formed as a Christian Nation, evolution is a plot of the devil - just a few of the commonly re-edit "Texan Truths".

Till security is fixed, the notion is not only preposterous but dangerous.

An article in ARS Techica calls security in IoT hilariously broken and getting worse.

I guess the projected cost savings from firing their IT staff and replacing them with low paid H1B's isn't enough for the corporate greed masters.
Same engineers who are busy throwing together the IoT without a second thought on security?
Unfortunately, they're teaching how we can all just 'get along', how to be politically correct, and how 'diversity' will fix all societal ills.
