Whether the measures are funny depends on how you look at it I guess, as 373K is as arbitrary as 212F for boiling water. Not to mention you have to memorize arbitrary names like nano and deci in the metric system.

Actually, if anything Kelvin is a lot less 'arbitrary' than Farenheit. Kelvin is based on Celsius, with the only difference being the 0K is absolute zero (there are no negatives on the Kelvin scale). Celsius is based on wanter. 0 for freezing, and 100 for boiling. Unlike F, which is loosely based on the body temperature of a feverish woman.

So, if you look at it, Kelvin is anything but arbitrary when you are referring to state changes of water.

After that, things seemed to work okay, though I still haven't gotten around to replacing are cheap ($20) digital answering machine that sounds worse than any tape I've heard.

I'm usually the first one to enter the game after a map change. I play at a steady 60fps (my monitor's limitation, not the machines). Even in heavy fire fights is stays at 59 fps.
I may have to upgrade the video card come HL2's final release, but for now I have a machine that can play any game out there. I'm incredibly satisfied with AMD (my first AMD CPU).

  5. Both on Online Backup vs. Tape Backup? · · Score: 3, Interesting
Online backups are wonderful. I just finished implementing an online backup system for a webhost. The clients data is backed up on the LAN to a backup server that is really nothing more than a big RAID. Then, via the web, users can download and restore their files as they wish.

Backups are done via rsync, and restores are done with cp. (The whole system is run on linux with php and mysql). The files are backed up from/restored to windows servers over samba.

This is all great and makes the users happy. However, any intelligent business will also have offsite backups. Right now, if a (pick your natural disaster/accident) happens, the company is basicaly out of business since no data resides outside the server room.

Of course since all the client data is stored in a central location, it would take nothing to add some tape backups/hot-swap HD/etc. and take them offsite once a week.

Agreed, and though I checked on most things, backup A/C was just something I did not consider yet. The problem is that while the building has backup generators running on natural gas, the A/C is not in this building, there is a campus wide HVAC system (we're located on the U of Regina campus). The power company is currently cavasing North America looking for transformers they can bring in to substitue in for the substation.

Just found out as well, the power company can only guarantee the campus 3.5 megawatts, we're currently drawing over 7.

There's a lot of things that were out of whack when I started here about 6 months ago, I'm working on it. Redundant air was just not something I considered

Why do you host at a place without dual power companies providing power?
Because we don't have two power companies here. I live in Saskatchewan (Canada) and we only have one power company

Why do you host at a place without dual redundant A/C on EACH power provider?
The office is located on the University or Regina campus. The campus provides heating and cooling to every building here. Redundant A/C is out of the question on that kind of scale for this small a community (~225,000)

Why do you host at a place without dual redundant power generators?
We have natural gas generators, however, they only power certain things within this building, not the A/C for the campus.

Just how "essential" is the stuff you're hosting?
Depends who you talk to. Our clients think they're sites are critical to their business. If we can't maintain uptime, we lose clients. If we lose enough clients we go out of business, and I lose this job, and get stuck going back to the Government, something I DON'T want to do

The Gov't Job was for anyone reading my profile and wondering why I say I work for the Gov't and now say I work for a web hosting company. Its not an excuse. • Incompetence is promoted. If you're a yes-man/woman and never disagree with anything the boss says, you'll go far!
    • Job Stability - There's no fear of being fired if you leave something horribly insecure or only do a half-ass job.
    • Benefits are good, but salaries aren't. Those that are truly skilled are finding better paying and more satisfying jobs in the private sector (and why I'm on a year leave while I work in the private sector for a while)

This is not to say this is the case for all IT workers/management everywhere. There are some very talented and motivated people working for the government, however, its been my experience that the best solution isn't always picked by those who make the decisions.
