I was thinking more of the multiple server with micro-kernel architecture part...as I understand Beos, that was one of the reasons it was quite zippy...
And yes- there are at least 2 different projects to re-implement or re-create BeOS...BlueOS and OpenBeOS to name the 2 off the top of my head...
And what exactly is Hurd being used for these days? I'll bet it's not anything with Sound or a large file-size....THAT's why I'm saying it's not finished developing...Puberty looks like it's just begun for the Hurd...but that IS where the fun starts...

I've scanned all the postings, and I haven't seen any other comparisons, but the descriptions from here and from the web page seem like about the same architecture...minus the extreme multi-threading and the integrated gui...
At any rate, it sure seems like this would be (yet another) great base to work from for re-building that OS that ain't no more...
It's fantastic that all of our portable devices are using less and less power with each new generation of 'em...but until we can suck power out of the ambient environment, we still need more R&D in that other area...

Sorry, but even with all the new Titanium rabbits, and NiMH options and what not...we still haven't been able to cram more than a few measly hours into the space of a laptop battery...and that's WITH the newest hardware options...

I was looking forward to some kind of os updates... with the right supporting programs, this OS could be what makes me switch full time from Wi...er...that other OS...
This is absolutely fantastic...I mean...I've been using and experimenting with computers since I was 13 years old...(so...cripes...18 years???Yeesh...) And this new (to me, at least) os is making me feel like a little kid again...when hardware wasn't cheap, and coding HAD to be tailored to be fast...It's very apparent that a LOT of hard work and love went into crafting this...

I used the second mouse button quite a bit on --an unnamed spreadsheet application-- for a long time when the second button was really first starting to be noticed and implemented as a useful appendage...
Then came Quake...
Games are not my whole life, but I have REALLY got to make a stand and say that they are one helluva lotta fun, and I'm Damn glad they exist!
Perhaps that's the reason why Macs have for so long not been kind to the idea of extra mice buttons--They didn't have the Games that used them, or (FLAME) couldn't get the performance necessary for lightning quick reflex time necessities...(/FLAME)
When it comes down to it, sure- ya use what you know and are comfortable with...But you know, having an extra button and scrolling wheelly doo-dads comes in very handy when you're Fragging off some aggression!

Anyone else remember the first few incarnations of the Voodoo3 DRI? SURE, it worked...But WOW- I haven't seen such speed since my grandma went out for the Sunday drive!
Thankfully- it's gotten MUCH better. And just in time for 3dfx to release their next great...oh wait...

A while back, I attempted to scrape together a wireless ethernet connection of SOME type out of some modems and a couple of cheap-O walkie Talkies...
Needless to say, it was a TOTAL flop. The walkie talkie transfer was garbled beyond recognition and I couldn't even connect the two points at 300bps. (I seriously have to question whether it would have worked at all to start with though- I'm not a genius with funky software hacks, but I know enough to hang myself with...)
The POINT was to build a better way to transfer MP3's to the hard drive in my car's mp3 player--yah- one more keen ornamental hack, but it would be much nicer to do it that way than physically either lug the whole unit in or string a frikkin LONG cable all the way out to the garage...
So I'm thinking this sound based hack PLUS a couple of those high tech mini-fm 2 way radios that seem to be everywhere now, and this just might work!
Anyone else been down this road?

I'm fairly new to linux, but I think I've tried looking through EVERY config file and how to I could find, and STILL haven't come up with a way to change both Screen Resolution and Desktop resolution at the same time...
And God loves Linux, but That really pisses me off- as that's something I'd LIKE to do now and then...Meanwhile Wundoze just has a neat and tidy little icon in the system tray that does it...
Yeah-yeah-yeah...don't tell me...Time to learn programming...
I think Mandrake had some strange utility that would do it, but I switched over to SuSE a while back and have been missing it sorely...(Of course now I can't even remember what it was!)
Has anyone been able to find out a comparative refreshrate/response time difference between these and the current crop of LCD's?
That's the main thing standing in the way of me buying one of these...I would save up my dough and blow it on a spanky new 22" LCD screen with a digital interface to go with that new GeForce3 card...Just as soon as there's a decent game that NEEDS the card, and as soon as that game doesn't look Like a blurry watercolor on the monitor if you choose to spin around!

Oh...wait...so was I...Well I know I've got a huge handful of old 30 and 72 pin memory simms...No, they aren't as fast as a new DIMM @PC133, but I'll but they're a Helluva lot faster than any old spinning hard-drive...and if I'VE got a couple o handfuls...I can only imagine what some other people have, let alone anyone who has been specifically collecting this stuff....
So what I'm thinking about is like an external drive bay that has NOTHING but SIMM slots in it-and a LOT of em....capable of maybe 20 gigs...okay-maybe 5 gigs...Connect up through a PCI card or even an existing ide cable or something...
Isn't this the same boot tech that win2k uses (WinNT???)? If so, then it really is no secret that winXP, which is BASED on win2k, is just gonna be a pain in the ass when it comes to any kind of multi-boot configs...
Actually, I have a dual PII system that I've been running a dual config on of win2k and SuSE (I hate NEEDing winblows...)but I leave the floppy in the drive for booting unless I need to boot win2k...I have always wondered why someone hasn't come out with some sort of 'HACK' to fix this particular annoyance...of course, when it gets TOO annoying, I'll probably have to fix it MYSELF- but that's the beauty of OpenSource, ain't it?

You got it all wrong, dude...Wine will surely work WITH winblows installed, but the OBJECT of it is to run the INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS MADE FOR Winblows...
Cause Microsoft ain't all that great...But Diablo2 is...And 3dStudioMax is...and plenty of other programs "IS" too...
Really sucks to feel like you've been left out in the cold just because you'd like to try something DIFFERENT and longterm BETTER...
It's all fine and dandy to be ethically superior and PURE and all that...GO FOR IT. I'm gonna be PRACTICAL.
And besides- It feels pretty good to rub something like this in MS's face..."I'LL run your silly little program MY way, thank you! And Nope- I won't be using your silly little DOS based program to run it either...You're rich enough as it is.
I know the Loki Games I've got gave me MUCH joy- HG2, Heretic2...

There are also rumors of them moving to MAC. (Or probably OS X---Or actually BSD!) That wouldn't be too bad from a market SIZE standpoint. Especially if MAC software becomes natively and EASILY transportable to a standard BSD box. I can almost see a MAC/BSD equivalent of DirectX...Not that SDL can't handle most all of it with opengl/al etc...Hmmm....actually, I saw on opengl.org that DirectX is being reverse-engineered (70% now!) for BeOS..with Linux soon to follow...after which Mac X will only be a hop/skip/jump away...

Now When a new chunk of hardware comes out, What happens when the specs become open source? Why, One of us, or the manufacturer, writes an implementation of the driver so we can use whatever the hardware gives us access to...
How is DirectX different? If they open the specs, can't we just re-implement the code in linux in order to get access to all the nifty games that ONLY use it? In the process, we can even streamline it a bunch...sure, we'd be doing MS's work, but I think everyone would benefit there... So "Hey MS! If you REALLY wanna piece of this market, OPEN YER DRIVERS!"
