You did the "right thing" with the expectation that the software company would also "do the right thing." If everyone did the right thing, then yes it would be enough, but that just doesn't happen. Therefore it is "the right thing" to disclose the vulnerability so that you can force the company to fix the problem. Not for any kind of recognition, but so that anyone using the software can benefit by having a more secure product. The entire point of security research is to have more secure software. Finding a vulnerability, reporting it responsibly, and then having no action done by the company, makes all the time spent researching pointless.

Actually, there is an exclusion for history due to the fact that the BSD code is licensed to be Open Source for all, for free. Therefore that code is allowed to be copied due to it's history of being free for use.

Or the "reward" he was talking about would be responsible behavior on the part of the software company. In this situation, the "reward" for responsible behavior would be that the company would fix the vulnerability in a timely manner. If you're not expecting this, then what's the point of the "responsible behavior"?

You assume that the movement about what someone does (have sex with people of the same gender) has nothing to do with what they are born like. The entire point is there is no difference between removing civil rights for someone who is black, for someone who is a woman, and for someone who is homosexual. In all three cases you are removing rights from a person on the basis of something they were born with. As the GP says, regardless of your background, heritage, sex, religion, sexual preference, you should be allowed to get married.

but really this isn't 'a threat against open source' it's a threat against an open source video codec, big big difference.

It's actually a threat against ANY open source video codec. If the MPEG LA manages to successfully sue Theora and/or WebM for patent infringement, then that will pretty much cement their claim that it is impossible to create a codec that is unencumbered by patents. This would be bad for any open source attempt at web video. Therefore h264 is a threat to much more than just "an open source video codec".

On the other hand, none of the youngsters seem to get it, and I worry that society is feeding their sense of self-importance just a bit too quickly for our collective good.

It is the nature of our society that the older generation nearly always thinks this about the younger generation. The younger generation thinks that the older generation is just out of touch, and then when the generations change again, the cycle begins anew.

Both sides have valid points, while there is something to be said for patience, there is also something to be said for the ability to keep in touch with a friend in any situation just by having a small device. If you believe that the texts are too frequent and annoying, then ask the person to stop texting you. Simple. :) As far as the societal impact, it really depends on the person. I personally think that the ubiquitous nature of mobile devices and the ease of communication is a great boon to society. Particularly to me, because I multitask a lot to get many things done productively and quickly. By contrast, I'm lucky if my parents even have their cell phone on them or turned on, (which makes it particularly difficult to find out when they'll arrive when they come to visit =P ).

Essentially, it's different for different people. But the older generation will ALWAYS believe that the younger generation "just doesn't get it." This won't stop technology from further developing, nor will it prevent innovation in all situations. I believe that the clash between the older and younger generations is what keeps it all in check. The old techies insert their opinions and have their influence due to experience which prevents the "fear" they have from being realized, while the younger techies continue to push the boundaries by having no regard for those fears.

I really don't know how I'd react, though I know that if it was some random citizens on a social networking site having fun, I wouldn't care. If it was official comments on an official site for the country, then I might have more of a problem. The entire point I'm trying to make is that this isn't a case of people doing something with the pure intention of hurting feelings. This isn't a case of people running through the neighborhood going up to each person and saying "your beliefs are stupid" it's a bunch of people on Facebook, doing something to protest actions they believe were stupid. They aren't being disruptive, they aren't flying banners of these "insulting" pictures. They just picked one corner of the internet to have their little pow-wow. Regardless of your opinion, to say that anyone should be insulted by it whatsoever beyond "oh you stupid people" is ridiculous.

As for posting "insulting things about someone else's religion," I do it sometimes to see the reaction, to 'stir the pot' so to say. It's fun to watch overly sensitive people with no sense of humor fly into a rage over some one else's silly and stupid comments. No one forced anyone in Pakistan to view the page, it wasn't put on a billboard and flown through the sky to be disruptive, you had to actively look and follow links to stumble upon this (or most comments insulting religion online) and thus if you don't wan to deal with it, then don't follow those links.
