  1. Broadcast & Marathon on Classic Mac FPS Marathon Turns 10 · · Score: 1
    Wow.

I remember coming back to my dorm room after class and having about 50 Broadcast windows up announcing Marathon games, parties, etc!

By the way, did you use the standard 3x4 icon pop-up menu (only 12 icons in that), or the version I hacked with ResEdit to make it 8 x 12 cells for icons (and filled them up with whatever goofy icons I could find)? It spread around Drexel University (Philadelphia) like crazy after I put it in my public AppleShare folder. :-)

Wow. What a jerk. All he said was that some spam filters ARE "worth a hill of beans." You claimed that all filters were useless, and he said that he has used one that works well for him. You are trying to prove a negative, and he simply showed you one possible positive example, which he admitted was not universal.

On your challenge/response zealotry: email is no longer as useful if every communication requires human-guided two-way handshaking. What if someone sends off a quick, but important, message to someone they have not yet made a "no-spam" covenant with? They then have to be out-of-touch for a while, and will not be able to handle the challenge-response system. The only way you could make this work without fundamentally changing how people use email is to make the challenge come back IMMEDIATELY as part of sending the message. At that point, you might as well just add logging to IM and call it a day.

A challenge-response system that is not universally built into every mail-server and email client and that does not give extremely high priority to fast challenges completely changes email. I guess that's why you have to advocate so strongly - it has not even a chance of being the solution unless everyone agrees.

  5. Why not buy Macs then? on Online Consoles Marginalizing PC Gaming? · · Score: 0, Troll

I don't think consoles will ever truly beat out PCs for gaming. Die-hard anti-Mac zealots will see to that. Rob Enderle and Paul Thurrott will explain how conoles are "not expandable enough" and they don't come in "Ferrari red" and you can't have an 3l33t b0cks that is better than everyone else. Everyone has the same hardware, so there is no geek-power posturing.

If PCs were no longer needed for gaming, these guys would lose their best _real_ argument against Macs. So, just wait for a slew or articles explaining why you should not buy consoles.

but when I last looked I couldn't find any way to access non-accelerated menu items without a mouse

I guess you didn't look very hard (or perhaps not recently enough, as you did admit was possible). Try looking at the Universal Access panel in System Preferences, and activate "Enable input for Assistive Devices." Also check out the Keyboard Shortcuts panel, which allows you to completely access the menubar and buttons/popups/other widgets using only the keyboard. This was added as beta software last spring, and is built-in to 10.3. In this way, you can access any menu item, whether it has a pre-defined shortcuts or not. You can also assign custom shortcuts for menu items you would like very fast access to. Admittedly, Apple didn't put a great interface on how to assign custom shortcuts, but the navigation is fairly easy: press control-F1 to activate (only needed to turn it on - not needed each time). Then you press control-F2 to highlight the menubar, and can use arrows to move to menus, then type the first few letters (or just one, if unique) of the item you want.

Have you read about this at all?!?! Geez!

Apple had to rush them out to VT at VT's request, because there was an October 1st (or 2nd?) deadline for this year's top supercomputers list. If they had been delayed, they would have to wait until next year, at which point there would be faster G5s (and Athlons, etc). They saw a sweet timing on the release of the G5, so they (they being Virginia Tech, not Apple) went for it.

    > Uh-uh. Their cash flow from operations is both positive, and has increased every year. If you don't understand that statement, then don't make statements like the above.

The OP was obviously talking about Walmart "losing money" on the online music sales, not in general. Steve Jobs has publicly said that Apple hopes to lose only a small amount, or possibly break even on online music. He said all their profits relating to music are on the iPod sales, and thus he can't see how any of their online music competitors will be able to make a business out of music sales alone.

I wish Apple or FileMaker would fix this bug! FileMaker Inc is a subsidiary of Apple, so there can be no finger-pointing excuses. Fix this!

Oh, I get the "you have no modifier keys anymore, ha ha" bug in FileMaker 6.0v4 for OS X, as well. Restarting the application does not fix this issue. I'd like to see FileMaker work on building OS X products that don't have major interface issues. How about when you try to see what related fields a sort is based on, but the column is too narrow to see the whole field? Just resize the window, right? Nope! We're still stuck with non-resizable dialog boxes all over the place!

That would cause some problems for Apple's current trend. They use convection to cool the iBook (which I'm using now), the PowerBook, and the G4 Cube. And if I were NASA deciding to use a Mac in space, I'd prefer one of those smaller systems to a big (but super-importantly expandable, according to all negative reviews of the Cube) G4 mini-tower.

Mac users better start petitioning Apple to add fans back in so Macs can work on on the space computer market-share!

Man, I wish that was actually an issue. Space travel has really let me down. I know even the boomers thought we'd have regular civilian space flight by now.

Oh well, maybe nanotech will make space-flight cheaper...oops, don't have that yet, either.
