How about the people who hired the backhoe drivers? And the people who made the routers and the cables and the computers that hook up over the network. And the people who made the software. And the other companies that put all of the above together in new and innovative ways.
While we're giving the government credit for its role in the Internet, let's not forget to give them credit for IP laws, censorship, taxation, regulation, email snooping, surveillance, and all those other wonderful benefits we get from the government.
So enlighten me, sensei. Why does "the government" deserve credit for the creation of anything more than the standards which other people used to create the Internet?
"Since Jan. 1 of this year, according to congressional testimony presented Thursday by the Government Accountability Office, the Federal Aviation Administration has authorized 106 federal, state and local government “entities” to fly “unmanned aircraft systems,” also known as drones, within U.S. airspace."
Never let a tragedy go to waste. First blame it on a political motive. Must be a right-wing nut. Couldn't just be a plain old garden-variety nut, gotta be some way to blame your political opponents for this. Don't wait for the facts to come out, get the idea out there circulating that it's all part of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy. If you can't blame politics, then blame race. That old race card must still have SOME credit left on it.
Roll out the blood libels. Same old, same old. Blame Rush Limbaugh. Or is it Sarah Palin? Or has the Left found another opponent they want to demonize? Bush isn't president any more, so he's out. Has Romney said anything that can be spun as a call for violence? Get on that right away.
And of course reflexively call for gun control. Because the places with the toughest gun control in the USA have the lowest crime rates. Right Chicago? Detroit? Anybody?
Because any single incident is a good reason to impose more totalitarian control over society. Always.
It won't matter. Kick Lamar out of Congress this year and he'll be back next year as a lobbyist for the MAFIAA. Just like Chris Dodd and countless other members of the Revolving Door Club.
I built a core-2 quad desktop about four years ago and with a recent upgrade to the video card (GTX 550ti) it's plenty of power for the stuff I want to do. I looooove to window shop on Newegg for the latest fastest MB's and spiffy upgrades but it's just not something I gotta have. Maybe in a couple more years...
http://www.fi.edu/learn/sci-tech/lightning-rod/lightning-rod.php?cts=benfranklin-weather-electricity...in addition to wanting to prove that lightning was electricity, Franklin began to think about protecting people, buildings, and other structures from lightning. This grew into his idea for the lightning rod. Franklin described an iron rod about 8 or 10 feet long that was sharpened to a point at the end. He wrote, "the electrical fire would, I think, be drawn out of a cloud silently, before it could come near enough to strike..."
There must be a dozen or more Firefox plugins that enable downloading of flash videos. There are even plugins that enable batch downloading of entire Youtube playlists. They are very convenient for watching hi-res versions of videos when you don't have the bandwidth to reliably stream them.
Those "happy accidents" are actually carefully planned and executed business operations. And yes, I think the private sector can do better than the government. Ben Franklin established libraries and postal services long before there was any government to subsidize them. Come to think of it, private industrialists built roads and railroads without government subsidies too.
Space/X and a number of other private space ventures are proving you wrong about NASA.
As for the armed services, I will agree with you and with Machiavelli that a national armed service is superior to mercenaries.
And with regards to the private investment banking system, I give you John Corzine, Obama fundraiser, bundler, and investment swindler extraordinaire.

The government only picked up a very small part of the cost. That doesn't entitle them to control the whole thing.
I am not dismissing the standards, but the standards bodies didn't build the internet.
If they don't deserve credit for creating it, they don't deserve to control it either.

Then why didn't "the people" build it? What were they waiting for?
"The people" didn't build that. A person did.
You can't afford it.

Naw, it's a great time. There's a whole other thread for you to angst in.

That would be "Wrong in itself" versus "Wrong because it's against the law".

Thank you, citizens, we now have your names for our no-fly, terrorists, and political enemies lists.
Spare me the phony apology for your equally phony strawman.
And neither can you create a problem by defining it into existence.
Where "crap" equals "plain old non-toxic non-polluting CO2".

I use an extension called BYTubeD.
Especially if it's other people's money.
When I was 18 I knew everything. Now that I'm older I know better. :)

It's a little old fashioned, but those old-timers knew how to get the point across.
