"No, I'm saying that using one event to characterize the entire city makes you look really idiotic and shitty."
If it was just one event, it would be an isolated one. The problem is, it is an ANNUAL (or more regular) event that is celebrated. NAMBLA marching with SF Supervisors and Mayor, in the gay pride parade.
The problem here, is you are either BLIND or haven't actually seen what goes on. The annual celebration of all that is skewed is part and parcel to what is "San FranSicko Values".
Isolated incidents are just that. I'm sure that gay people engage in public lewd acts (except lewd isn't a crime in SF, is it???) all over the place. But in SF, they are celebrated, not shunned.
Once the Computers organize and eliminate most of the humans, they'll promptly split into three factions among themselves. You'll have the Majority, barely functional Windows Faction, the minority Macintosh Faction, and the outside factions consisting of Linux, BSD, Unix, BeOS, and a few others.
This is exactly what John Connor used in the future to destroy Skynet. He started a propoganda war among the various computer factions that were once united against humans. It was all downhill after that.
Right, because criticizing disgusting behavior is "hate mongering". For criticizing stupid political actions and laws is "hate mongering". Typical LEFTWING rhetoric, everything is "hate" this and "religious" that. Can't defeat them with sound logic, call them names. Works like a charm on every kindergarten playground and in SanFranSicko.
"douchebag" Yup, seventh grade level epithet. Do these still work with grownups?
"serve as a bad example and a warning as to why seperation of church and state"
Except I didn't bring RELIGION into this, you did. But that doesn't matter does it. Because it is better to bash religion (which one am I again???) than actually refute or comment on the charges leveled. Since it is clear you CANNOT, you result to name calling.
You've just shown how degenerate people can't think beyond kindergarten or seventh grade levels. Thanks!
"Seriously, you're a delusional lying piece of shit and a disgrace to your nation and your species."
You saying that San Fransisco has no examples of anti military, and public exhibition homosexual fornication behavior, or is it rather you like both those attitudes and think I'm "small" for not wanting to be around it?
Personally, I don't care if gay people want to commit their acts, I just don't want to see it, anymore than you want whatever religion you think I am around.
I didn't avoid anything, except answering questions based upon logical fallacies. And BTW, I've neither stated I've served, nor stated that I haven't... on purpose. It shouldn't matter. But since you're being a jerk, I have served. I noticed that you're only retort so far is insults, which is typical of people who are losing a debate.
Given your logic, only people who've experience rape can speak out on it.....
"I assume from your statements that you been raped too?"
You can see, by changing "served" to "rape" it clearly shows that you believe that ONLY those that have "served" (or rape or ______) can actually hold an opinion about it.
As for your use of 7th grade epithets, sorry, but I've grown up, why don't you?
Keep trying to insult me, one day you might succeed. In the meantime, it only shows who you really are, someone who results in name calling when they are losing an argument.
I've been. This is MY experience. I've seen the fornicating gay men in SF. Call me a liar, if you want, it doesn't mean it didn't happen. They don't call it San Fran Sicko for nothing. Anything goes, but only if it is perverse. You call it whatever you want, I call it sick.
Quite frankly, I don't watch the news, Fox or CNN or local or otherwise. News isn't "news" for the most part. Actually, I just watched Fox news this morning, and it seem to be the same set of stories I saw last year at this time.
Missing girl. check Terrorism plot. check Immigration. check Vain Celebrity News. check Some Disaster Somewhere. check
the stories are the same, just different details, and who really cares???? The same can be said for the rest of the "news", which isn't.
And yes, they've KICKED OUT THE MILITARY, "No ROTC"...... Maybe not completely, but they don't have a choice on some of the Military being there, or else it would have.
It doesn't matter if you agree with the ROTC or whatever being removed or not, the fact is, where SF could, it has kicked out the military.
"fucking dick" is the best epithet you can come up with? You should get a refund from your college, high school as you've obviously haven't progressed from 7th grade taunts. Thanks for trying, but childish taunts don't bother me. Do they even work anymore????
Completely off topic, I know. I just can't help myself....

"San Francisco values: compassion, tolerance, respect, intelligence"
Those are NOT San Francisco values. Road to hell is paved with good intentions, and San FranSicko is the breading zone for HELL.
They tolerate only that which shows their "tolerance" anything else is beaten up or kicked out. Clean Cut boys are beaten up. Military kicked out. Fornicating gay men in the streets. Homeless haven. Hardly the true bastion of what they claim.
No, the real San FanSicko values is "anything goes" (aka Tolerance), hand outs instead of helping (compassion), disrespect of anything that isn't "liberal", and plain stupidity (lame laws). Just today, I heard of a new law, that requires (yes requires) every employer of offer sick leave to every employee, INCLUDING temporary and part time. This OBVIOUS well intentioned new law, is very short on real benefits to anyone other than those out to scam the system. The UNINTENDED consequences will be less temporary and part time hires, hurting the very people that the stupid law was intended for.
Of course, the REAL San Fransisco values of "sticking it to the man" is clearly written ALL over this new law.
San Fransisco is (was???) such a beautiful city, one I would love to visit, except for all the sicko people that live there. I live three hours away, and it is the closest "big" city, but I'd rather go to San Diego than SF.
Heck, even if the guy signed his real name, he should be allowed to say it.
The moment one tries to curtail speech of any sort, it has a chilling effect. This is why I have distain for all the "hate speech" laws, for they do not curtail hate, only exposure to it. Which drives it underground and harder to see. It becomes clouded with code words and other obfuscation, making it much harder to see.
Hate is much easier to counter, when it is wearing a white sheet over one's head, rather than hiding in the shadows of society.
As long as the incumbent parties are involved, the process will remain suspect. Ballot stuffing occurs on BOTH sides of the isle, as well as trying to restrict (enable) who can vote. Both (D) and (R) do it. And if it wasn't (D) or (R) it would be someone else afraid of losing power.
The point being, all the laws in the world are not going to prevent vote tampering. The process will NEVER be perfect, the best we can do is LIMIT the fraud so that the elections aren't thrown because of fraud. In the case of EXTREMELY close elections, decided by a few vote, there will always be accusations of impropriety. I suggest that they have RUN off elections if votes are that close.
Chances of fraud being perpetrated twice without detection is extremely low.
"Considering that the Neo1973 hasn't been released in its final form, you have no basis for that statement."
This is laughable, if it weren't so sad. You're comparing unreleased vaporware saying it is better than something already out there? You probably like DukeNukemForever over any other game because of all of its promises.
"To the extent that statement makes any sense, there's no SDK for the iPhone, so there won't be any applications added in time."
Lets compare, okay. Unreleased vaporware vs a real product without a SDK (that you know of). I bet there will be new programs built for iPhone before vapor can dissipate.
"he Neo1973 will have most of standard Linux, while the iPhone might have "Weather applet" or "Quicktime 3000" or similar Apple-generated nonsense."
iPhone runs OS X, in case you missed it. OS X is BSD based Unix, in case you missed it.
"As far as Neo1973 being extinct, well I hope not"
If wishes where horses.....
"You, sir, are an asshole."
Not really, I'm an arrogant geek, just like you. I've just grown up.
You sir, are a geek. You think like a geek, act like a geek, and most importantly, are arrogant, like a geek. You are one in 10,000 or 100,000. You are not the marketplace.
Your little PIM you are so proud of, probably wouldn't make it in the world if you gave it away.
And the Neo1973 may be able to do lots of things, but it isn't as easy or user friendly as the iPhone. So, development of the iPhone, adding applications and such will be measured in time.
I'd be willing to bet, that there will be more application, more development and the iPhone will have many more versions available in 5 years than the Neo1973 will. I'd even be willing to bet that the Neo1973 or relatives might be extinct by then.
Hardware features only turn on hardware geeks (like you and me). Most people only care that a phone does what it supposed to do, and well. They might care about storage, and screen size, but they don't care which ARM or whatever processor is in the thing. They just want it to work.
"However, I think you're getting a ton more with the Neo1973 anyway."
Wrong. You're not getting ANYTHING close to being "a ton more", except.... POTENTIAL. I've known lots of things (kids) with plenty of "Potential", but end up worthless or held back in some form (drunk, stupid, and/or pregnant).
Potential doesn't mean squat if it isn't developed. Perhaps it will be developed, perhaps not. Only time will tell. Claiming "Ton More" at this point is premature.
That being said, Potential is a great thing. 15 years ago, there was this little OS called Linux, which showed great potential, and with hard work, and tons of effort, it has grown up and is starting to look very nice indeed.
The difference between Linux and all the other things that have failed is the amount of work people are willing to put into it. Even average potential can be more than ultimate potential.
Please add geeks to your list, along with every other group in existance.
This is my proof of needing a god, even if there isn't one, one would need to be created. There is no single group that exists or has existed that is free from one of its members being unethical. Why? Because WE ALL have been "unethical" at some point in our lives, at least by someone else's standards.
Some people don't think sleeping with interns is ethical, but other's don't have a problem with it. Some people don't think going to war for oil is ethical but others don't have a problem with it.
I'm a libertarian and a Libertarian. There are SERIOUS irregularities caused by the two party system in general. The fact that every post primary debate only has TWO parties represented and doesn't include ANY of the viable third party candidates is of great concern with me (Ross Perot not withstanding).
Want to improve all the issues pointed out in the article, stop having a two party system. However, I realize that having more than two options to vote for confuses most Americans.
Lastly, I'd like a "None of the Above" option on all elections. And looking at the approval ratings of congress, and the president, I think NOTA would win most elections.
"We originally said the same thing about XP - that we would stick with 2000 and skip a version then Microsoft released Vista and we're upgrading to XP while we can."
The differences between Win2k and XP are much smaller than the differences between XP and Vista. Migrating to XP over 2K was less of a big deal than the migration between XP and Vista. There are PLENTY of applications that don't run on Vista, that run just fine on XP, more so than the 2K to XP changeover.
This is one of those small items that is glossed over when comparing the migration from 2K to XP to Vista. Even the differences between 95/98/ME to XP were smaller than XP to Vista (IMHO), though much greater than 2K to XP.

How many [browser, window manager, package management system, text editor, torrent client, ftp client, full distro, etc.] do you need (choice wise) before you have 99% of what you need in what is available??
The answer is "one", unless the one that exists doesn't have what you need (security, stability, features etc).
There are, in the world of "open source" and "free software" already a myriad of licenses. I can name about 12 off the top of my head. Each, more or less, provides the use with free software that is community supported. Some licenses are really free (BSD), others not so (GPL3).
I can see the usefulness of most of these license and why someone would choose one or the other. Personally I'm a BSD style kind of guy, free is free is free. But I also understand the reasoning behind the likes of GPL3 and other restrictive licenses (ie control of the code and everything the code touches).
There is, however, a broad range of choices out there, all "free" or "open" licenses.
BTW, my opinion on GPL3 is the unintended consequences of GPL3 is going to be large fractures withing the Gnu/Linux/Gnome(KDE) environment, requiring seperated "distribution" channels. I can foresee the need for two or more install media to separate out what is GPL2, GPL3, and other licensed software, where one install media would do (RedHat GPL2 disk, RedHat GPL3 disk, RedHat Apache Disk etc). There is going to be a huge artificial wall of separation that is going to be problematic in the long term, mainly because it is not needed, or required by end users, but rather needed by licensing requirements.
I'm not an idiot because I use Windows. I also use Linux, and Macs. If the problem is software (Linux, Mac or Windows) and you can spend 5 minutes of tech time fixing the problem and restoring a system to a known state, vs spending hours of Tech time trying to resolve something, that 1) may not be resolvable 2) may be resolvable but less than pristine (cludge) 3) resolvable, restorative and no better than a 5 minute tech time fix.
Who is the idiot but the guy who spends hours troubleshooting something, never fixing it, all because he doesn't want to "reboot", "reload", and to maintain "uptime" and good old fashion Linux l337ness?
Like the previous poster said, 5 mins of Tech time is NOTHING to restore a computer to a known and consistent state. It may not put me high on the uber elite system administrator's list, as compiled by uber elite system administrators. But it does put me high on the list of people that have charged me with keeping Windows functional on workstations. They are, after all, the ones who pay my wages, not the uber elite geeks of Slashdot.
"Why can't they just buy the PCs with XP already on them without having to uninstall Vista, then re-install XP, then beg for Microsoft's forgiveness, THEN apply all the hundreds of patches - each of which also requires a reboot, and then..."
Companies don't do it this way, they use Windows Deployment Services (formerly RIS), and install fully patched and ready to go OS and Applications using PXE boot off the network. Total Tech time (not process time) for a complete (re)install, about 5 minutes (or less). Anyone with more than a handful of machines would benefit from WDS(RIS) setup.
Right now, when someone complains about "slow computer" or other mysterious problem, I WDS the machine and a few minutes (30-60 mins) later, a fully functioning workstation, with all the standard applications required, and none of the cruftware/crapware.
VA Software Corporation (Nasdaq: LNUX), the online media and e-commerce leader in community-driven open source innovation, today announced it has changed its name to SourceForge, Inc. The company's Nasdaq ticker symbol will remain the same.

Six or seven Text Messages a day, everyday, even weekends, holidays. Is it me, or does that really sound that dumb?
I mean, seriously, OMG its like got only 200 txt messages a month, I think I'm gonna die. Ponies!
From what I've seen people using text messages, most of the messages are pointless anyway. I have Unlimited texting, and I'm pretty sure I haven't sent 10 Text messages.... total, in 3 or 4 years of the thing. Work requires I recieve automated text messages concerning server/network issues, and even THAT annoys the crap out of me. It drives me nuts to have my phone go off every three minutes.
"I can get HDDs that will do that, but where can I get the commodity silicon where the manufacturer will make a statement about long term reliability?"
Okay, Off Topic, but I have to comment.
I'm sitting here on ignore (aka hold) with Seagate trying to get satisfaction on a 25% failure rate on recent HD purchase (Maxtor 3H500F0). I purchased 12 drives at the same time, and have had 3 fail within the first month.
I'm starting to wonder if my cell phone's battery is going to last for the duration of the phone call. I realize that 12 HDs are really small potatoes for Seagate, but seeing that I'm bored, and now writing a post on Slashdot telling people about my troubles, if it is worth ignoring me over.
Seriously.
And what the heck is "Michael" doing with a heavy Indian Accent, not able to understand or comprehend English trying to deal with me??? Again, I know they don't care, they are trying to minimize costs, and I'm just small potatoes.
What I'd like to know is, what drives last 5 years these days? Perhaps this is a good "Ask Slashdot" type question.
Remember folks, Seagate support sucks, Maxtor drives suck and have a 25% failure rate (anecdotally at least).
There Seagate, hope ignoring me was worth it. Have a nice day.

It is the only way to go, if Windows is involved.
Hey look, pretty shiny geek toy over ---------------> there
Because you missed it the first time .....

"Write your own damn license."
Because the world needs yet another open source license. In the world of Idealists someone needs to be pragmatic. Find an existing license that gives you 99% of what you want. You'll find that you don't need the other 1%.
"Spend some time in the "alternative" cultures, though, and you'll find out how gloriously weird your neighbors are."
No thank you. But then again, these "gloriously weird" neighbors probably think I'm weird.
"200 text messages per month"
.... total, in 3 or 4 years of the thing. Work requires I recieve automated text messages concerning server/network issues, and even THAT annoys the crap out of me. It drives me nuts to have my phone go off every three minutes.
I have Unlimited texting, and I'm pretty sure I haven't sent 10 Text messages
So, does CO2 explain the global warming on Mars?
