  1. Not this cr*p again..... on Should Next-Gen Game Consoles Be Upgradeable? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Upgradable in anything more than a trivial way, HD or Optical for example, basically an add-in card, blows the console economics out of the water. Socketed ram adds cost and drops speeds vs soldered. Same with CPU, and then we get to cooling issues..... Given MS's ability to keep the bumps on the 360 from shattering, would you want people to start mucking with that?

Part 2 is pointed out well above, console = fixed platform = cheap software testing. Upgrades = not fixed platform = testing nightmare.

While I haven't read the article (yeah, shame on me), I know more than enough about console development, economics and programming. I also talk to people doing the 'next gen' consoles almost every week. Having written for a console, I can tell you directly that 'upgrades' are, and will always be a non-starter. Anyone who posits it seriously is the walking equivalent of a flashing neon 'N00B' sign, complete with arrows. :)

Why bother when they can be arbitrary and capricious? They don't need to actually PROVE it, they can just find usage models they don't like, cut your *ss off, and tell you to get bent when you complain. And charge you for the privilege. I just moved to Sprint, and both an Epic 4G and a Photon + Easytether means USB tethering without jailbreaking. Easy enough.

I haven't bothered to jailbreak it because of time limits for now, maybe when 2.4 comes out or something I might care enough. Easytether requires a USB connection and a shell command to start, but that is about it, works like a charm. USB might not have the ease of wi-fi tethering, but it charges your phone rather than sucking it dry when you use it. :) That and it is easy enough.

The real question is whether the top-level executives at News Corp were looking the other way.

Easy enough to answer, no they didn't know. They _SAID_ so themselves, and had the same policemen they are alleged to have bribed for leaks, tracking, and other things clear them. What more do you want? How dare you bring that liberal smear job in to this reputable forum!

The other real question is whether we will acknowledge that the shareholders soundly deserve to feel the effects of what they have chosen to invest in.

Of course not, they are the victims here as much as Murdock and his paper are! They were hacked, and the damage is immense. Feel sorry for them, and make sure that the poor innocent victims only trying to game a supposedly fair system for profit are protected. I feel we should have a bailout and a few laws passed to make reporting on this kind of thing illegal.

If assholes like those who run News Corp have a hard time attracting investors while more ethical companies have no such difficulties, that's a win for everyone.

No, you miss the point entirely. News Corp is the victim here, they were hacked! The people in charge apologised too, what more do you want a pony? Remember who is victimised by this.

It's fortunate for everyone that this happened in England where the corporations don't dominate government to quite the same degree as in the US.

OK, I can't play Fox commentator any more, I have do this part straight both as a member of said media and as a person who doesn't like this level of stupidity. What planet do you live on? The only difference is that it is better hidden in England, they are subtle, something that has been entirely lost in this country because things are so blatant there is no need for subtlety.

Those f3wls that base their purchase decisions on such things as functionality and cost of ownership don't know the deep satisfaction obtained from a random person getting caught staring at my new widget. Yup. Something like a My-Fi with the same data plan is carrier agnostic, or at least not tied to the same carrier as your phone, has month to month plans, and can be shared among you and your friends on the subway, something that WILL make you the envy of the people on it. It can work with any device you have that supports wi-fi, and is in general a much better idea.
