This looks like it very much as hardware geek think. very cool, very esoteric.
It is not pointless, however, but it is very bleeding edge. I can see this being more practical as processor speed improves.
Maybe eventually there will be something like a box with a firewire connection or something.
You know some companies will freak if people start producing software to receive HDTV, Satellite Radio, etc. HDTV is supposed to be the standard nation wide by 2006(??). This ties in with the ability in HDTV to block recording of certain programs, etc. if you have a digital recorder. This will also tie into that bill Sen Hollings introduced.
Perople who do not get out enough rarely have any notion as to just how $%#$&^@ huge the country is.
Even if you spent an evening just looking at skimming through these, you could get an idea.
It used to be that people often lived their whole lives within walking distance of their home village. You can easily have the equivalent of that today, with close knit communities of other types.
As if banner ads that take up half the page were not bad enough, if this company is going to take over my entire browser, that is just unacceptable. All we can hope for is the ability to turn that insanity off...
Actually what they are working towards is to turn the desktop computer into a Desktop Advertising Device, all protected by Digital Rights Management so you can never avoid the Ads.
To get any work done, you have to sit through long blocks of ads.
And viewing the ads will be mandatory.
Ultimately this will be a form of economic slavery neatly package as something neat and fashionable. Imagine being a borg as a fashion statement, or something to do to tick out the 'rentals
As for SoundExchange's inability to update its Web site due to not having an on-staff webmaster, please take a look at this 10-minute guide to HTML. I'm sure some of the talented folks at SoundExchange could pick up the skills needed to update the text of your Web site within a couple of days, and it would have saved many hours of many people's time (and prevented much confusion) if there hadn't been a number of folks pointing to the SoundExchange site as proof that (for instance) SoundExchange will not be paying the artists directly.
Current law provides that consumers can only have access to their local network channels, and prohibits Americans from watching local news and information originating from other areas of the country. EchoStar believes this law violates the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Today, consumers living outside of New York are permitted to subscribe to their local newspaper as well as the N.Y. Times, Washington Post or other newspapers across the country, yet those same consumers are denied access to New York television news.
Personally, I think it would be good for the country to be able to see what the local news is like in LA, Houston, Chicago, NYC, Seattle, etc.
And it would make it much more difficult for national politicians to get away with lines spun for one market. This would at least allow a shot at something interesting to see on the TV. I am tired of all the same old junk.
My own solution has always been along the line to make spammers pay money. period. Part of what makes Spamming attractive is that the spammers do not bear the cost of their "advertising" - we all subsidize it.
There should be a spam tax, or something similar.
This is all commercial speeach, and so therefore the government can charge a fee to defrays the costs to the system.
My own solution is to make every spammmer have a spamm license, so that they are easily traceable for billing purposes. We can all bill them. I have also suggested a cute orange ear tag for spammers, nut this is merely an optional element for the plan.
The other part of this is to make it profitable for people to track down illegal spammers and get them arrested, make them pay the fees we shoiuld be charge them. Enough people do this for no money [track them down], and are expert at it, so why not let them get some financial reward out of it?
For Linux to try to de-throne Windows, it will have to be a lot more like Windows.
Actually, it will have to be a lot better than windows, or else there have to be other compelling reasons to switch, like the cost of hardware vs the MS Tax.
Which MS is desperately trying to avoid as a fate.
I just talked to a bunch of friends about their experiences with the new and not-so-improved airport security so maybe I'm a little more wound up about than I should be. It seems that the new procedure at the airport is to hassle enough people that nobody wants to fly anymore, that'll sure help with air security.
The whole point of airline security is that They do not know how to screen out little old ladies and average citizens from the pool of potential terrorists.
This may be because they know that they have already have everyone riled with the government to begin with. Of course, one way to make an enemy is to treat everyone as they were the enemy already.
The only way that it would be brain damage is if any and all stressful activity causes brain damage.
which it doesn't. This is called learning.
You do not have to be an expert nuerologist to have a firm grasp of the basics. Brian damage is not caused by external events. The may be emotional trauma, but that is another issue.
Otherwise we get into the issues of a person giving themselves brain damage merely be the thoughts they think alone. Now if you are talking about someone like bill gates or george bush, opr bill clinton, i would have to think about it.
Since the Brain is self rewiring, etc. I actually doubt physical brain damage.
But I can believe disorientation. Similar to losing hearing or some other input channel.
I recall experiments from many years ago where the people were wearing glases that flipped everything upside down. At some point the people completely adjusted.
in a similar fashion, space shuttle jockeys take about two weeks to get used to weightlessness, especially for tasks like throwing balls, etc. both throwing and catching are pretty hard wired.
Loss of an electronic input should not be any more damaging than any of these things.
Unless he is counting electronics as part of his brain.
Which I disagree with.
Now the reality check might be an issue as far dealing with non-electronic reality goes.
I would have to disagree. There are a lot of geeks out here with their own brains. They don't seem to follow the leader very well. That's probably the exact kind of thing carnivore is protecting the government from...
Given the tendency to argue with each other, indulge in flame wars, etc. and in general be over individualistic, this tends to limit the scalability of genius and talent.
It's the old adage of in a war between a well organised army of morons vs a few genius types, bet on the army of morons.
Stupidity is much more scalable than genius. Guess which wins in the long run?
Speaking of Carnivore: for 3 months, just after September 11th. I noticed that all of my traffic was being routed through Arlington VA. This stopped about two months ago. Now my packets travel normally, (no Arlington node in every traceorute). Was that Carnivore? If it was, doesn't that violate Free Speech?
It was probably the NSA, until they put you into the category of "Mostly Harmless"
Which is what I think they did with most the geek community.
The George Bush Center for Intelligence has a campus-like atmosphere with lovely grounds and well designed work areas. Artwork and displays from around the world add extra interest to the busy day. The Agency has a casual dress policy when appropriate. Employees have a choice of a variety of foods in the modern Food Court or can arrange to have an elegant lunch in the Agency Dining Room. To keep in shape, employees have access to fully-equipped fitness facilities, a jogging track, and walking paths. A company store, recreational and activity clubs, access to entertainment tickets, and on-site dry cleaners, film processing and barber shop add to our employees' quality of life.
The George Bush Center for Intelligence?
Yes I know this is likely a research facility.
Is this something like the search for Intelligent life in the Universe?
Maybe these are the guys who bugged a student press office at Quaker Campus a while back? Although i mention this with a something of a tongue in cheek spirit, to be serious, that incident does seem to be more of a local job using radio shack parts.
If there is copy of this as MUSIC, then there should be no protection for the Music in another Artform.
Example: projecting the Music onto the backdrop of a Theater production.
Besides our understandinfg of DNA is sufficiently small that you can not consider the design of living creatures an art form at this time. When it does, then I can consider giving them the copyright.
I consider the body of work seen in the Australian Marsupials to be fantastic.
DNA is merely the notation of the configuration of the Life Form.

So this is all part of a somewhat larger picture.
I must go bash my head now.
make the bad man go away.
Even if you spent an evening just looking at skimming through these, you could get an idea.
It used to be that people often lived their whole lives within walking distance of their home village. You can easily have the equivalent of that today, with close knit communities of other types.
And we are supposed to trust them when they don't even bother getting a site up running XP as the OS?
Given that this is a flag ship promo site, you would think they would have all the OS issues sorted out well in advance.
If I was witty, I would think up something to do with the activation screwing them up.

It is always good to encourage techical literacy.

Future spam:
Make Money Fast Tracking Down Illegal Spam!
[smile]
The government should be worried if some geeks ever got a hold of these.
Actually, it will have to be a lot better than windows, or else there have to be other compelling reasons to switch, like the cost of hardware vs the MS Tax.

This becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

This can still have horrendous results.
This vs maybe adjusting the music, but also adjusting the sound of the singer so that the singer stays in tune.
This would be like the simpson rig, and would be truly impressive technology.

Classify it as "Mostly Harmless"
Well, the question is, could something like this be used for other less desirable purposes.
I am thinking of everything from the Classic Napster to DDOS, reverse engineering, or what ever.
The long term trust issue is the point here. pre distributing this capability in the client in advance of notifying me is annoying in the extreme.
I have added the following features without asking sounds like an MS tactic.
watch Passport become a distributed computer app for MS development projects, for example.
feh.
Yes I know this is likely a research facility.

ssshhhhhhhhhhhhh
Pud's having fun
Slash is probably due to be purchased by Fucked Company, who has received additional money from investors, as seen in this report on Yahoo.
Here in the link, for example, to the CIA College Intern Page.
so basically, sounds like non news item.

Which, of course, simple undoes all of the things MS has done that were not quite legal.

Yep, that is the name of the page.
