The drivers should have remained the same. Developers and API writers should take these things into account during the production of their software. Its just bad form to hide features and disable potentially cool stuff because it *could* be used inappropriately. Many people have made good analogies, so I wont bother to come up with one.

I just want to say that I disagree with this. I play Q3 and HL, I use a Leadtek GeForce2 so these were not availible for me to use. I am also a developer of games. I would have preferred that Asus had not removed the features.

  9. Re:Incorrect on many accounts on Diablo II: Lord of Destruction · · Score: 1

I have to agree with illserve, you were incorrect on the points he made. Except the comment about Tribes, that is too much of a blanket statement. Just because a game lost players, even a signifigant portion of the playerbase, does not mean it is dying. Games can exist entirely on the fanatics that you describe. An example of this was the original NWN on AOL which had a base that was many times its max capacity, and was constantly full (even at times like 3am) up until the day it was shut down. After it was shut down alot of the people who had previously been paying $2/hour to play it tried to get it started back up on another service. Failing that they are now trying to create something that was very similar to the original. These people made up the entire base of the game for several years, slowly growing into what would probably be termed fanatics because of the fervor that they clung to the desire for the game. But NWN existed entirely on these people for the longest time.

Diablo is a very simple game. Repetivie, simple interface, few choices, and it focuses on keeping the player occupied by physical goals such as levels, stats, items and exp. Typical of MUDs and today's MMORPGS. But that doesn't mean its a bad game or one that shouldn't have been made.

I see alot of gamers who want to become game designers or work in the game industry. But the big hurdle that alot of them need to get over is the idea of true games. They need to realize that a game is good if enough people want to play it to make back the cost of its production. It doesn't matter if it follows the rules of all the other games, or if its not original enough.

The weirdest thing about games is that everyone wants to tailor the game to themselves. But the biggest thing about gameplay is the challenge of adaptability. If people want all the good games to be ready-set for their style of play then there would not be any creativity or expansive learning involved in playing those games. Adapting to a new style of play caused by changes in games or new games is one of the things that evolves decent gamers into great gamers.

  10. I would like to choose when I die. on "Cell Executioner" Gene · · Score: 1

I don't imagine that living forever is something everyone will do. I imagine that there will be things that kill us off, such as having our internal organs swiftly removed from the protective coating that is our skin. But, sudden-death and accidents aside, I don't think that everyone will want to live forever.

If I had the opportunity to do so; if I knew that I could live indefinately, I might have less ambition. I might take things more slowly, stop from my 9-5 job and "smell the roses" more often. I might live to be over 100 years old. I think I might want to live to be 500 years old, because there are alot of things I have thought would be fun to experience which I estimate would take about 500 years of living to accomplish. But I also think that once I have done everything I want to do, and I've exhausted my capacity to remember, I would want to die.

When I think about dying today I tell myself that I do not want to die because there are things left that I need to do. I need to find a wife, I need to have children, I need to watch these children grow into adults. I need to finish this perl project, I need to recreate this really cool game I played back in the early 90's, I need to accumulate all the things that are required for all my goals. These are the reasons I do not want to die at the moment. In another 300 years I might feel differently, and I'll be ready to leave.

It would be very good to choose when I die.

  18. What he meant by that.. on Michael Abrash on Games Programming · · Score: 1

What he meant by that is that the consumer hardware availible now far outclasses the complexity of games availible now. 5 years ago this was not the case, and it was very easy for what was considered a well-written program to perform horribly on expensive hardware. Does anyone remember playing Quake2 without a Voodoo? Even with a Voodoo my top of the line machine, which cost more money than the new stuff nowadays, couldn't top more than 60 fps even if I turned off all the juicy stuff. But now Tom's Hardware is assembling PCs that cap off over 150 FPS in todays games.

So what he was saying is that its much easier for people to buy machines that are powerful enough to run the new games well. 5 Years ago it was nowehere near as easy to get the hardware necessary for such amazing frame-rates.

I live here in the valley and I can say that I don't consider myself or the people that I know and work with to be these so called "techno-missionaries", or people who "seek a grander meaning to their jobs".

The reality isn't anything so grand as they'd like to claim. I live in Santa Clara, CA and I have been living here for my entire life. I have spent signifigant time outside of the area, in different states as well as time in Europe (in Bath, england and Budapest, hungary). The best way to describe the SF bay area is to say thats its like the stock market, its very fast with big money, and very difficult for the little guy to survive for long. Its a great area to start out. This is a place where a nobody with nothing more than a High School diploma can land a job as a sr admin or a jr coder. I graduated at only 16 but still I had no formal higher education beyond a class at UC Berkeley that I dropped out of, and I was hired without even any inquiry into my school background. Opportunity is very abundant here. The tech field has alot of opportunity for obvious reasons, but so do the other areas because of the rising cost of living.

Housing costs are insane, rents are even worse. The high cost of living is pushing the non-tech workers out of the area, forcing them to commute longer and longer to put in their daily 9 to 5. The backbone of our cities, the county employees, the public workers and store clerks are all abandoning the area because they can't afford nearby housing. My mother has been working for the Santa Clara county dept of revenue for over 15 years, she never owned a house here and now I have to help her to pay her rents just so she can stay near her job.

Its not easy to live here. Companies are enticing workers from all over the world and offering to pay or compensate for relocation costs. This is making it next to impossible for average people to live here. My mother tells me that half of her dept. has left over the last 5-10 years because of cheaper prices elsewhere.

I don't find any religious self-conscious epiphany from living or working here. I mostly spend my days trying to keep the company I am in afloat (which is thankfully easy due to our product!) and hoping that I don't have to search for a new job tomorrow. Its definately a cool place to live, for those who can manage it, but I wonder if it will remain such a tech-only place when all the non-tech workers have been forced out and have to commute for 3-4 hours to and from work..
