Well two things really:
1) my desktop is/home/username not/home/username/Desktop
Which leads to point number two
2) The directories will just be recreated when I rerun the application (i.e. evolution) that created them.
If I were using a Desktop directory none of this would be a problem but because I'm using my home directory (i.e./home/username ) as my desktop directory, there's alot of cruft there that I don't really want to see.
The stuff circled in red is what I don't want to see. Eventually I'll move the text documents into another folder but I need them right now.
The other downside is that KDE and Gnome don't share.desktop formats. Therefore if I load gnome, the links on the side (root, tubby, fatboy and my two fish:// links) are displayed wrong and do nothing. Now fish:// is a kde-specific thing but if I wanted to, I could move them into a folder called "Network Filesystems" or somesuch and then I wouldn't have to see them in gnome but for now since I'm spending my time in KDE, I'll leave em.

is the.hidden config file for konq views. Actually it really only applies to my desktop view as I use my home directory as my desktop.
You'll be surprised how much cleaner your home dir stays if it's your desktop!
Right now I have three folders on my desktop that I don't want to see: evolution, mail and News. Short of recompiling evolution to use.evolution for its datastore, I have to live with it. Being able to right click a folder on the desktop and select some like "Hide from desktop view" is enough to make me wet myself.
Same concept really. Wyse used to make serial terminals but has kept themselves alive with thinclient workstations. Basically a citrix terminal running off a flash chip.
I'm sorry but I'm not responsible for the other guys in my department. I don't care what they make and I don't think some of them should make the same amount I do.
Unions do nothing but cater to the lowest common denominator in any group. Regardless of what you may think, you don't have a right to a job and the government has no obligation to give you any. Sorry, but I don't want to have to wait for the union-approved cable maker to create a patch cable for me because that's someone elses job. I'm going to make myself more marketable to my employer by being the guy who gets shit done. Not the guy who bitches about it not being his job.
I don't think that forcing a windows machine to use IE for windows update is a bad thing really. It uses activex VERY heavily. When was the last time Microsoft put out an activex plugin for Netscape? It's been YEARS.
I gave up on Kapital. It was nice while it lasted. Shawn and his company do a great business but the delays in getting the newest versions out just didn't cut it for me. Some of the bugs were show stoppers.
The mailing list was quite busy for a while and then about a month or two ago, it just died. Someone posted a request for an update on the new version and there was never a response.
About two months before that, I switched banks so I archived my.tkk for my old bank and downloaded the QIF from the new bank. I've been using GNUCash ever since.
And I'm sure you're aware that Codeweavers is a company setup to help fund Wine development? Also the fact that the article explicitly says that they paid Codeweavers to work on Photoshop support in CODEWEAVER'S CROSSOVER OFFICE.
Oh sorry, that would mean you read the fucking article.

Well in all fairness, ccache only does any good after the first compile. The distcc option however does make a difference.
I will agree that the biggest thing for me with gentoo is actually being able to strip stuff out of an install with a simple USE flag. I actually prefere to build things myself but having a package management system that takes care of dependencies for that is a godsend.
Dude I understand the Northern suburb to Atlanta commute, allthough my current position is driving from Roswell to Larryville.
What gets me is this. I'm currently interviewing with a position that went from 1000 resumes to 10 phone interviews to 3 in person interviews. What I've found through all this is that companies need employees with added value. As software skills become a commodity, you HAVE to keep yourself marketable. If that means paying for your own training to add to your skills or whatever, then do it.
I'm really hoping I get this position though. I'll be able to ride MARTA from North Point down to Peachtree Center and walk right into the office. No more commute for me! (I hope.)
We are not a democracy. Get it through your head. Democracy is a terrible for mof government where 51% of the people take rights away from the other 49%.
That may be true but I can always go to another privider if I am unhappy with an increase in premiums because the insurance company had to pay out some multimillion dollar medical bill.
Despite what you may think, the cost will not be spread out among the population. It will be spread out among the population that actually makes money to cover those who don't. You can damn sure bet that if anyone with a slight socialist bend proposes the idea then the cost will be progressive.
No one has still not answered why I should be forced at the point of a gun to pay for someone else's medical coverage. I don't remember where it says in the Constitution that it is my responsibility.
I will not disagree that Bush is a spendhappy freak right now. It's true that the deficit is the biggest in history but you aren't looking at the math.
Admittedly this is from National Review (ugh) but facts are facts:
Yes I know that both major parties want big government. Just from different angles. Dems want in your wallet and Reps want in your bedroom.
What bugs me is that people assume they have to vote for one of the major parties. Why? Isn't it Norway that has 30 odd parties and representatives are elected from almost everyone?
Look at the real alternatives. I've been a libertarian for the past 5 years. Registered no less. I'd suggest you look at them or an Independant of some nature. Stop perpetuating the two party system!
Explain to me how a man who thinks that it is the government's job to give everyone healthcare paid for by the government from my pocket and who is an avowed socialist is GOOD for the economy.
Let me give you a bit of advice. If you vote for a candidate on a singular issue you are going to be regretting it down the road.
I never made any comments that stocks bought were used to start companies. I was saying that the people who are long-term and solid investors are the people with more income. That investment can come in the form of 401k's or Roth's or many other forms. The only point I was trying to make was that looking to actors or musicians or turst fund babies as the example of the "rich" is not a fair assessment of the wealthy population of this country. People don't want to accept that the position they are in is a result of thier own making.
Excluding people who have fallen on LEGITIMATE hardship (and that list is VERY small for me - disability is an example), the people who bitch about "rich" people are too damn lazy or just plain stupid with money and want someone else to make up for it.
Speculative investments are no more or no less valid investments. The people who have extra income to invest are more likely to take a risk on a stock or a VC opportunity. I respect Adam Smith, but as I have to remind myself with Thomas Jefferson, he isn't the be all and end all.
As to right-to-work, I think you misunderstand what I was saying. My point was simply that you are not guaranteed a job but you are guaranteed the same opportunity as everyone else to get a job. You may not get that job because of lack of skills or because you called the interviewer an ass in the meeting but you had the same chance as the previous applicant to get in the door. You are also free to start your OWN company and be the person doing the hiring and firing.
As long as the games cater to a different crowd, they might be okay.
Is the average WWII online player going to be a starwars player or a UO player? Usually not. Throw Motor City Online or Sims into the mix and you lessen your chances.
What the downfall of SOE is going to be is the EQ play engine. UO has been leaning towards this sort of "leveling treadmill" for a while. If SWG is the same, I'll sadly pass it by.
Look at it this way, the high income earners are the ones who invest in the economy. These are the people that buy stocks and start companies. The ones that give jobs to others. Spurring the economy does not happen by giving someone $300 whereby they go buy a new television.
You also state that they take it from the workers who are creating wealth. You don't have a right to work. You are free to go elsewhere and find a job if you don't like the current one. You aren't being forced at gunpoint to work there. Oh wait, white-collar work isn't as admirable as blue-collar work? Despite the fact that the white-collar managers and CEO's are the ones who EMPLOY the workers.
You mean people who don't pay any taxes (because the actually get back more than they paid in as tax credits) don't get a REFUND?
How odd! Maybe I should mail in all the rebates hanging on the wall of CompUSA. I didn't pay for any of the items but according to your theory I should still be able to get them.
Make no mistake, the record companies will get a portion of the proceeds. The bands/artists are in huge debt to them. If they don't make enough on album sales, they'll have to tour like mofos.
I'm not in the industry mind you, I've just read alot about it over the years and I have some friends who are.
I'm sure many bands like Phish are probably out of thier original contracts by now but they are one of the most boot-friendly bands out there.
As a correction: in most cases, Live performances are fully within the ownership of the band. That's pretty standard in most contracts. Bands retain the rights to all live performances and the profits therein.
Funny you should mention this. At one point there was discussion on an Athens to Atlanta high speed rail for students and families who went to UGA but were from the burbs. I thought it was a great idea until I realized they planned on putting stops along the way.
