I thought the article scored more points on addressing the HTML 5 arguments (which are far more valid - and possibly why the NYT app is better (I don't know it's dev-dissection)).

Bonus points for your book link. I meant to get that title a while ago and forgot about it. Just downloaded it for my kindle-reader iPad client - thx!

re:"The article suggests this was done to get the app out quick after Flash was officially vetoed by Steve Jobs"

Why quick? Wasn't all the years flash was excluded for the iPhone at all a hint? OOOOOh I get it - controversy = hitcounts! Linkbait me baby - linkbait me!

I think the interface still needs a little work - but at least it wasn't nearly as painful as PopSci's efforts. NYT still rules the interface roost. I know where to go - it stays out of the way - and no tutorial on "how to read this magazine" (Time, I'm looking at you).

Might also be nice to have the video play in the page as an option like the NYT too. Or stream it to save on space. I can live without video when I'm on a plane.

Speaking of "a-whoopin' and a-hollerin'" - I've heard a few of these keynotes (downloaded on iTunes) while driving in the car, and not one but at least 2 times - on different keynotes - I seem to hear the exact same voices "hooting". I thought nothing of it until Andy Ihnatko blogged something similar during his notes on the iPad rollout about Apple employees loaded into the seats. Is Apple staging more than just what's in front of the audience - and is now staging the audience itself?

    Not a big-deal - but if we're going to talk about "a-whoopin' and a-hollerin'" - I thought I might as well ask.

By this logic, the truly smart just bring in some guns and start shooting at their problems. They solved the bullying, brought a media firestorm of scrutiny on the problem, and have elevated their status far beyond the mainstream. That's some serious goal-achievement. Of course their personal consequences are a bit extreme - but hey, aren't kids mature enough to know what's an appropriate response while having ready access to firearms?

    Of course they are. FIRE!

This is so subtle I doubt anyone else will catch it without looking for it. There's a bug in the original ROMs collision detection with the monsters. The way it works is this - each monster is polled one at a time instead of all at once. That's (part of) the reason you can be partially consumed by the monster instead of merely touching the outside (the collision detection is in the middle) - here's the bug - since it rotates through all the monsters, it's possible to (on very rare occasions) to pass through a monster without harm. I've done this in both Mame and in my home-arcade (full-size stand-up).

The google-doodle - ALSO has this emulated. Now THAT is attention to detail.

bingo - all social species are innately programmed to work together when possible. At the base level it's called empathy. I'd like to know how many people who helped others in NY (and elsewhere) on 9-11 were thinking "bible" or "10 commandments" before pitching-in. Many (after the fact) were astounded that they put themselves into harms way to help others "without thinking".

Instinct is funny that way. Enjoy your genes.
