Okay, let's analyze this. You're forking an freely available open source game whose plot is basically a penguin sliding down a ski slope. How can this possibly not compete with a commercial game with the same exact concept and practically identical code plus a few new pixmaps as additional characters? Can someone explain this to me, I've obviously missed something.

The adult industry doesn't seem to have much of a problem making money on the internet. I saw an interview on Howard Stern with Jenna Jamison. For those of you who don't know, she is more or less the ranking porn star of today in terms of money and popularity.

Anyway, her net worth is estimated between five and ten million. The majority of that is revenue from her web site, not her film career. In fact, she has made so much money from her web site (basically charging people to look at her pictures -- she's in the studio every week), that she has basically retired from the film industry.

Seriously though, I've heard an awful lot of rhetoric about making money with open source. This may seem like a blantantly obvious question, but is anyone asking for money? I mean, Ximian doesn't have a PalPal link up, nor does RedHat, etc. They seem to want people to contribute with source code, not cash. I didn't read the article, so maybe I'm missing the point here.

Why? It's obvious. Some people have far too much money. A distant friend of mine was an early employee at small ISP named in Northern Virginia called AOL. Let's just say that when they IPO'd, she could burn her net worth for heating purposes and still never have to work again. She was one of those people who payed 5 or 10K on eBay for some Ultima-on-line stuff. Why? Because the money to her was nothing, just like spending $.50 on a coke.

    Two quick points.

Is the USA the fed or the fed + 50 states?

What does the spending for FY2001 look like if you add fed + 50 states? Wouldn't that be a more accurate estimation of USA spending? I'm not trying to take sides, but perhaps the orignal poster is thinking in terms of the actual United States, not the United States government only?

On a slightly related note, Google's director of operations and head sys-admin gave a great technical presenation of why google runs so damn fast last week at the Bay LISA meeting. Two of the more interesting things were that Google's colors on their search page were chosen for rendering efficiency and the fact that they have a team of people who actually count the bytes on their pages to make sure that you are getting all the necessary info with the least possible bytes. Considering it was a free talk, it was very interesting for us linux enthusiasts.
